08/01/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 1, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Time Warner and Comcast‘s purchase of Adelphia Communications Corp for a cool $17 billion has been finalized. Time Warner will gain about 3.3 million subscribers, and Comcast will gain about 1.7 million subs.  The additional subscribers, and a bit of an exchange between Time Warner and Comcast of other subs, will ultimately give Time Warner a total of 14.4 million predominately in the NY and LA areas, and Comcast a total of 23.3 million in the New England region, Florida, Minnesota and Pennsylvania where Comcast is headquartered.

Tonight’s Premieres:
GSN:  Chain Reaction at 9p and Starface at 930p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

ABC has decided to continue its repurposing of ABC Family’s Kyle XY on Friday nights.  On Friday’s at 9p the show has averaged a little more than 4-1/2 million viewers and a 1.4 A18-49 rating.  The show’s season finale will air first on ABC Family on August 28, and then on ABC on September 1st.

AOL will launch a beta test preview of its new AOL Video portal later this week, available at www.aolvideo.com. This free portal service will include more than 45 new VOD channels containing thousands of hours of programming from various content partners such as A&E Network, MTV Networks, Warner Bros. Entertainment and the WNBA among others. It will also include a sophisticated video search engine with interactive programming guide; free streaming content and other full-length content available for purchase, as well as a multitude of videos, news clips, movie trailers, TV shows and more.

Ted Koppel’s role at Discovery Communications has expanded to include a new weekly feature Ask Ted Koppel on Discovery’s broadband channel, Discovery Channel Beyond. Viewers can send their questions for Ted, on any current global topic, via email at [email protected]. The questions and answers will be updated daily and archived for future searches.

The fallout from Mel Gibson‘s Friday morning arrest has not only been felt in Hollywood and the film industry, but is reaching television as well. ABC has pulled a project in development with Icon Prods., Gibson’s production company, for a miniseries about the Holocaust. ABC told the Wall Street Journal they were pulling the project because after two years in development they have yet to see a script.

You know all things in television are cyclical, and so this won’t be any big surprise.  The world of syndication is looking at developing game shows – both old formats and new ones.  According to Broadcasting & Cable, King World and Sony Pictures Television are looking at bringing back The Joker’s Wild as well as a new game, Combination Lock.  Ideally sold as a single hour, distributed by King World for the Fall 2007 season.  Sony will handle the barter sales.  The Jokers Wild last ran in syndication during the 1990-91 season, and before than aired for nearly a decade beginning in 1977.

CBS, DIC Entertainment and AOL will launch KOL’s Secret Slumber Party on CBS, the new Saturday morning three-hour programming block, on September 16, 2006. Here’s the lineup:

7:00a Madeline
7:30a Sabrina: The Animated Series
8:00a Trollz
8:30a Horseland
9-11a CBS News – The Saturday Early Show
11:00a Cake
11:30a Dance Revolution

TV One is launching its free VOD service on Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications VOD-enabled systems as of today.  The network’s on-demand programming will be available on all of Time Warner Cable systems, while Cox will be launching the programming on cable systems about a half-dozen markets including San Diego, Las Vegas and Cleveland.

“Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.”  Those were the first words heard on MTV when the network launched 25 years ago today, August 1, 1981.  MTV’s first videos were Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles and You Better Run by Pat Benatar.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

The new interactive seven-week reality game show Gold Rush, from Mark Burnett Productions and AOL, has signed Mark Steines as host. Mark, currently co-anchor of Entertainment Tonight, will preview the game for viewers on the Gold Rush teaser site at www.aol.com/goldrush that is up and running now. Once the show debuts on September 13, Mark will offer play-by-play happenings about each round up to the finale.

Lionsgate has a new first-look television contract with producers, Sean and Bryan Furst of Furst Films, to develop and produce programming for broadcast and cable. The first series, Tough Trade, is underway in development for HBO, depicting a rowdy Nashville music family.

Joining the cast of Sci Fi Channel‘s 6-episode drama series The Lost Room will be Julianna Margulies, per Hollywood Reporter.  The series stars Peter Krause.  The project is currently in production and expects to air on Sci Fi in December.

USA Network has ordered up three additional episodes of its newly-launched dramedy series Psyche, starring James Roday and Dule Hill.  The additional eps bring the total up to 15.  The series launched with over six million viewers, and to date has averaged just under 4 million viewers per episode.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

The TUBE Media Corp., parent company of THE TUBE Music Network, has named Pat LaPlatney as CEO/Board Member and Shane Coppola has been appointed as Chairman/Board of Directors.

Delbert A. Whetter has been upped to COO at Exodus Film Group, where he will direct all operations for the studio as well as continue to oversee all business affairs.

Tower Productions, Inc., has appointed William Fisher as CEO, responsible for the company’s business operations and growth in the areas of programming, international development and broadband video. In addition, the company’s founding President/Executive Producer, Jonathan Towers, will become the Chairman to direct creative oversight and program development.

Cathy Chermol has signed a new deal to extend her Executive Consultant role with Telepictures Productions. She will develop and produce strip programming specifically for the syndication and cable marketplaces and she will provide executive consulting and producing for the studio’s new and current programming. Cathy, who is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television producer commuting from both Los Angeles and New York City, will be involved in the development and launch of The Dr. Keith Ablow Show this fall.

National Geographic Television has hired Michael Castro to the position of VP/Operations. Michael will head the production operations and post-production for the network.

And a quick housekeeping note — Cynopsis will be on vacation (no editions) during the week of August 7th, but no worries – we’ll be back in full force on August 14th.
