CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

08/01/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 1, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Putting the myriad of rumors to rest, the Entertainment Software Association unveiled plans for the future of its annual E3 Expo.  Next year’s 2007 E3 Expo will indeed take place in LA as planned, but – bring the lights on down low, because it will be “a more intimate program.”  E3 as we currently know it began 12 years ago when the industry was in its infancy and E3 and was about “establishing the industry and securing orders for the holiday season.” The ESA’s aim is for the evolving E3 is to move away from being the one-size fits all mega-event to one that provides exhibitors with an arena to meet in smaller more targeted groups to demonstrate and discuss their products with the media, developers, retailer and others.  While there will be opportunities for bigger product demonstrations and the like, there won’t be the usual trade show floor experience as in the past.

AOL will launch a beta version of its newly refurbished and expanded video portal, AOL Video, at the end of this week.  At AOL Video users will be able to create their own video content and share it in addition to downloading paid programming content from a range of cable networks.  AOL Video will feature 45 new video-on-demand content channels, free streaming content as well as paid and ad-supported content that can be downloaded for viewing on different devices from a range of cable channels, in addition to 20+ AOL programmed channels.  Programming content for the new channels will come from a range of networks include MTV Networks, A&E Networks, National Lampoon, Procter & Gamble Productions, Turner, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and the WNBA.  Kid-targeted programming content will include:

Nickelodeon: SpongeBob SquarePants; Zoey 101; The Fairly OddParents; Avatar: The Last Airbender; and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
Nick Jr: Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer
The N: Degrassi; South of Nowhere; O’Grady; and Beyond the Break
Nick at Nite: Fatherhood; Hi-Jinks
MTV: Laguna Beach; Punk’d; My Super Sweet Sixteen; The Real World among others.
Sorpresa!: Tienda Mágica, Cachureos, and El Planeta de Remi.
Warner Bros. Entertainment: The Flintstones; The Jetsons; Babylon 5; MADtv; and Dukes of Hazzard

As planned CBS, DIC Entertainment and AOL will launch KOL’s Secret Slumber Party on CBS, the new Saturday morning three-hour programming block, on September 16, 2006. The block, co-produced by DIC and AOL, will include six shows as well as KOL-produced interstitials focused on healthy eating habits and featuring singing/dancing group Slumber Party Girls.
The 2006-07 Season programming lineup* for KOL’s Secret Slumber Party on CBS:
7:00a Madeline
7:30a Sabrina: The Animated Series
8:00a Trollz
8:30a Horseland
9-11a CBS News – The Saturday Early Show
11:00a Cake
11:30a Dance Revolution

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon has given the go-ahead on The Naked Brothers Band (13 x 30 min), a new live-action ‘mockumentary’ comedy series from creator/producer/writer Polly Draper.  Slated to debut on the network in January 2007 with a 90-min movie, The Naked Brothers revolves around two tween brothers and their successful rock band, which stars Draper’s real life tween sons Nat and Alex Wolff, who also write and perform the music on the show.  Not to leave anyone out, Michael Wolff, a well-known jazz artist, Draper’s husband and father of the boys, will play the father on the series, only his character has no musical abilities.

The new animated series The Replacements will premiere on Friday, September 8 at 9p, on Disney Channel.  The Replacements follows the story of Riley and Todd, an orphaned siblings who answer an ad in a comic book for a new set of parents.  The voice cast includes Nancy Cartwright as Todd, Frey Delisle as Todd’s older sister Riley, as well as Kath Soucie, Bryan Cranston and David McCallum among others.  Created by kid’s author/illustrator Dan Santat, executive produced by Jack Thomas and directed by Heather Martinez, The Replacements is a production of Disney Television Animation.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has awarded The Cards Inc. Group the master toy licensee for the Harry Potter property throughout Europe.  The Cards Inc. Group is a distributor/manufacturer of trading cards, games, toys and collectibles in the UK and Europe.  Under the multi-year licensing agreement The Cards Inc. Group will create toys and collectibles based on the creatures, characters and themes from the Potter stories.  The first line of products will be based on Warner Bros’ movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which is set for release in July 2007.  Products will include: role-play action figures; action figure collector and box sets; Magical Creatures collector action figures; electronic role play sets; die cast and remote controlled vehicles; and playsets.

Geffen Records and DIC Entertainment have partnered to create SPG, a new tween/teen targeted brand, which will be built around Slumber Party Girls, the music group that will host the new KOL’s Secret Slumber Party on CBS Saturday morning programming block and be featured in the block’s show Dance Revolution as well as interstitials.  This month will see the debut of the Slumber Party Girls single on iTunes and KOL, which will be followed in 2007 with the rollout of a line of consumer products and a feature film.

STONE SOUP

“Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.”  Those were the first words heard on MTV when the network launched 25 years ago today, August 1, 1981.  MTV’s first videos were Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles and You Better Run by Pat Benatar.

MTV announced nominees for the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards yesterday in NYC.  Leading the way with seven nominations a piece are Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira, followed by Madonna and Panic! At the Disco with five nods each, and Christina Aguilera with four.  The 23rd Annual Video Music Awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall in NYC, Thursday, August 31, at 8p on MTV; a host has yet to be named.  Two new categories have been added to the show this year  – bests in Video Game Soundtrack and Video Game Score. Voting for these categories will take place at Gametrailers.com.  This year viewers will be able to log onto MTV Overdrive and screen all of the nominated videos, and for the first time this year all viewers will be able to cast their votes in the general categories, beginning this week through August 20 at http://www.vma.mtv.com. Voting for the Viewer’s Choice category begins August 7-31.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The Radio Disney Network, which turns 10 this year, will now fall under the Disney-ABC Television Group banner, where it will be overseen by Rich Ross, President/Disney Channel Worldwide.  Jill Casagrande has been named SVP/GM, Radio Disney Network.  She will manage the day-to-day operations of the channel and continue to report to Ross.  Prior to this Casagrande was Disney Channel Worldwide’s SVP/Programming Strategy.  Casagrande takes over the reins from the channel’s current SVP/GM Jean-Paul Colaco, who has been with Radio Disney since 1998.  Colaco is moving over to serve as SVP/Business Development, he will report to Disney CEO, Robert Iger.

HIT Entertainment has appointed Frank Foley as its SVP, in Japan.  In Japan, Foley will oversee and grow HIT’s divisions including consumer products, publishing, TV distribution, live events and the Thomasland theme park.  He will report dually to Alison Homewood, EVP/Worldwide Distribution, and Peter Byrne EVP/International, both based in London.  Foley joins HIT having toiled for 17 years for New Corporation in Asia, for the last six years as SVP/GM, Japan.

And a quick housekeeping note — Cynopsis will be on vacation (no editions) during the week of August 7th, but no worries – we’ll be back in full force on August 14th.
