AMC is opting to cap its drama series Breaking Bad with a final season comprised of 16 episodes. Production on the final season’s episodes begins early next year though the premiere date has not been set yet by AMC. Starring Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad is produced by High Bridge Productions, Inc. and Gran Via Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television for AMC. Breaking Bad is currently in the midst of its fourth season which debuted July 18.
Just a week after its current season premiered, TLC announced yesterday it is pulling the plug on Kate Plus Eight and not renewing the series for another season. TLC mentioned it will be open to future specials involving Kate Gosselin and her children. By the end of this season, TLC will have banked 150 total episodes between the first reality series version, Jon & Kate Plus 8 and the renamed series, Kate + 8 that followed the Gosselin’s divorce.
REELZCHANNEL will broadcast the 2011 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 17 at 8p, according to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The actual awards ceremony will be taped September 10. This year marks the 17th year Spike Jones, Jr. will produce the awards event.
This past Sunday night Food Network revealed Jeff Mauro as the seventh season winner of Food Network Star. As the victor, Mauro receives a new daytime show on the network titled Sandwich King debuting this Sunday at 1130a.
Half-hour docu-series Cuff’d premieres on MTV August 29 at 11p. The series gives an up-close perspective of what happens during the ride to the police precinct after a youth offender is arrested. Each episode follows up to six different young perpetrators from different parts of the country and during the intense ride to the police station, much is revealed about the young adult, what led them to this critical point and the advice given by the police officers involved. Cuff’d is from Down In Front Entertainment.
A trio of original series launch on Travel Channel October 4:
- Made in America at 8p is a 13-episode series hosted by George Motz investigating various ingenious products made in this country. Hoff Productions, Inc. produces for Travel Channel.
- Mysteries at the Museum premiering at 9p is comprised of a dozen one-hour episodes hosted by Don Wildman who travels the US in search of strange and curious historic treasures housed in our most venerated museums. The series is from Optomen Productions, Inc. for Travel Channel.
- Off Limits, airing at 10p, is a one-hour series returning to the network’s lineup and also hosted by Don Wildman. In seven new episodes, Wildman explores hidden and unseen places in America. Authentic Entertainment, an Endemol Company produces the series for Travel Channel.
Premiering its first original primetime series Strike Back last Friday night, Cinemax accumulated a gross audience of 1.1 million total viewers over three airings. The actual debut of Strike Back at 10p tallied 567,000 viewers with 286,000 tuning in to the encore at 11p and another 248,000 for the second repeat at 12a.

Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. and Virgin Media Inc. forged a new deal allowing Scripps Networks Interactive to purchase Virgin Media’s ownership in UKTV, a collection of ten lifestyle, entertainment and non-fiction programming channels. UKTV’s brands include Home, Good Food, Watch, GOLD, Alibi, Eden, Blighty, Yesterday and Really along with companion websites for each channel. The transaction includes a payment of £239 million by Scripps Networks Interactive to acquire Virgin Media’s 50% common equity interest stake and another £100 million to cover the outstanding preferred stock and debt owed by UKTV to Virgin Media. BBC Worldwide, the commercial unit and wholly-owned subsidiary of the BBC holds the other 50% stake in UKTV. The transaction will be completed once regulatory approvals are granted in the Republic of Ireland and Jersey.
Beginning next month, a hi-def simulcast of Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network will launch on Sky in the UK. Cartoon Network HD will begin on September 14 and be the first hi-def channel in the UK from Turner Broadcasting which also has Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito and CN Too.
A one-hour drama series is in development at HBO based on the new novel The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta. The Leftovers, dealing with what happens in a suburban town following the Rapture, will be released as a hardcover book and an audiobook next month.
Julianne Moore is in talks with HBO to star in a period drama series in development from Todd Haynes (Mildred Pierce). The project is Dope, based on the novel of the same name by Sara Gran who is also writing the pilot script. The plot centers on a former heroin addict who becomes a private detective in 1950s Manhattan. Haynes and Moore previously worked together on Far From Heaven and Safe. Haynes would direct the Dope pilot and be producer along with John Wells and Christine Vachon.
Jim Henson’s puppets will be featured in a new scripted television project titled History Of. The Henson puppets will reenact pop culture events in a humorous and irreverent way and the show will further include surprise celebrity cameo appearances. History Of is a production of Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Group company teaming with Henson Alternative, The Jim Henson Company’s brand for content created exclusively for adult audiences. Chris Regan, previously a writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company and Jonathan Murray, Chairman of Bunim/Murray Productions are executive producers on the project in addition to Bunim/Murray’s Gil Goldschein. Dave Stone and Rachel Speiser, both of Bunim/Murray are on board as co-executive producers.
New animated series Brickleberry is going forward on Comedy Central. Production begins on the 10-episode series this fall with a planned roll out early next year. Brickleberry is about a group of forest rangers at a national park that is in danger of shutting down unless a newly hired ranger can retrain the staff to save the park. Brickleberry is executive produced by Daniel Tosh and Waco O’Guin and Roger Black who also wrote and created the series. Brickleberry is co-produced by Fox 21 and Comedy Central.
Jacob Young, playing JR Chandler on ABC’s All My Children since 2003, will finish one soap role and will quickly move on to another when he joins CBS’ Bold and the Beautiful. Young reprises the character Rick Forrester starting September 26, a role he played from 1997 to 1999. ABC ends All My Children on September 23.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: FOX spiked in a win Friday by delivering a 1.6/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s NFL Preseason match between Tampa Bay and Kansas City scored the highest ratings at 8p with 1.7/7 followed by Univision’s Teresa at 1.4/6. Univision outmatched the competition during 9p with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.8/6 though more preseason football action on FOX was a close second at 1.7/6 and NBC’s Dateline was third at 1.0/3. In the 9p hour, ABC premiered new series Karaoke Battle USA at 0.9/3 which tied for fourth place along with CBS’ CSI NY repeat. FOX remained consistent with its ratings and on top through 10p with more NFL Preseason at 1.7/6 and NBC’s Dateline was next at 1.4/5.

Dan Bryant takes on the new position as Executive Producer at Whitehouse Post in their Chicago office.
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network promoted Meg Lowe to SVP/Distribution and Strategy. Meg previously was SVP/Distribution for Discovery Communications and in her new role at OWN will spearhead all sales and affiliate marketing efforts in addition to carriage negotiations for the network.
Cable network The Hub, aiming at kids and their families tapped Stan Lim as Design Director. Stan will report to Jordan Beck, VP/Creative Services and work closely with him and the network’s marketing and promotion group to continually evolve The Hub’s brand.
