Election 2012 News: PBS NewsHour Executive Editor Jim Lehrer will moderate the first presidential debate set for October 3 at the University of Denver in Denver, CO. ABC News’ Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz was named moderator for the Vice Presidential Debate on October 11 held at Centre College in Danville, KY. CNN’s Candy Crowley who serves as Political Correspondent and Anchor of the program State of the Union will moderate the second town meeting-style presidential debate on October 16 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Crowley will be first female moderator of a presidential debate since 1992. CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent and Anchor of Face the nation, Bob Schieffer will moderate the final presidential debate on October 22 at 9p at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL.
NBCUniveral reports 219.4 million Americans watched the London Summer Olympics across its networks, becoming the most-watched event in US television history. The 2008 Beijing Olympics tallied 215 million total Americans, based on data from Nielsen. Other viewership nuggets from the NBCU include: 31.0 million average viewers tuned in for Sunday’s Closing Ceremony which bested Beijing by +12% and Athens by +58%. NBC also averaged 31.1 million viewers over the 17 nights of primetime Olympics coverage, the most-watched non-US Summer Olympics since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
This October, PBS will premiere a new nature series, Saving the Ocean hosted by marine biologist and author Carl Safina and produced by The Chedd-Angier Production Company. Saving the Ocean will be comprised of 10 half-hour episodes and spotlights people and communities around the world who are offering positive solutions to saving the world’s oceans. The first season will premiere on PBS stations nationwide In October. Major funding for Saving the Ocean is provided by The Kendeda Fund and Okeanos Foundation.
Yesterday, ABC revealed the professional dancer pairings with celebrities for the upcoming Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars slated to premiere on September 24 with a two-hour episode at 8p. The partners include: Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy; Pamela Anderson and Tristan Macmanus; Helio Castroneves and Chelsie Hightower; Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson; Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough; Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya; Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd; Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy; Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff; Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas; Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani; and Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke. New for this edition, fans will decide who the 13th and final All-Star celebrity cast member will be between Sabrina Bryan, Carson Kressley and Kyle Massey. Fans can vote for their Viewers’ Choice: All-Star at www.ABC.com/DancingwiththeStars until August 24 at 12p PT. This final cast member and his/her professional dance partner will be announced live on Good Morning America on August 27. Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet are returning to the show along with judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. Dancing with the Stars is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions.
Last Friday’s two-hour finale of novela, La Que No Podia Amar (The One That Couldn’t Love) on Univision reached 8.0 million viewers who tuned in to all or part of the broadcast. The finale delivered an average audience of 5.8 million total viewers; 3.0 million with A18-49; and 1.6 million with A18-34.
In the wake of its declining ratings, CNN is apparently exploring reality show ideas, adding celebrities interested in talking politics and developing a late-night talk show, according to the New York Post. The Post has reported CNN executives are talking with top talent agencies and producers in Hollywood to gather ideas for reality programming in an effort to transform the network. Potential changes in store for CNN include: a late-night talk show hosted by a panel that is described as a late-night version of The View; five new reality shows to air on Saturday and Sunday nights which would complement the previously-announced Anthony Bourdain Sunday night show; and a search for new on-air personalities outside of traditional TV news using Bourdain as the example. These plans have not been confirmed by CNN.
Travel Channel takes flight with a new original series, Airport 24/7: Miami premiering with two stacked half-hour episodes on October 2 at 9p and 930p. The weekly half-hour program with six episodes in total goes behind the scenes to reveal the inner workings of Miami International Airport, also known as MIA. Viewers will be introduced to MIA employees who keep the airport running efficiently despite 40 million passengers each year and how they fight terrorism, intercept drug smugglers and manage severe weather and more. Airport 24/7: Miami is produced for Travel Channel by 2C Media.
Country music star Trace Adkins will headline a new series for GAC titled Great American Heroes. The series follows Adkins on his national Songs & Stories tour as he meets and highlights ordinary people who are heroes in their local communities. GAC will debut Great American Heroes August 22 at 8p and encores of episodes will air on Sundays at 8p. Knoxville-based RIVR Media produces the series.
A fifth season is on tap for truTV’s series Black Gold produced by Thom Beers’ Original Productions, a FremantleMedia company behind such other series as Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers. Black Gold follows crews in the oil fields of Texas as they battle the elements, equipment and at times each other. truTV ordered 10 episodes for the fifth season set to premiere this winter.
Before one episode aired, VH1 is pulling its reality series Ev and Ocho, starring NFL player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and his new wife, Evelyn Lozada. The network is taking the show off its schedule, which was due to premiere on September 3, following Johnson’s arrest on Saturday for an alleged domestic violence dispute. After signing the wide receiver last June, Miami Dolphins also cut Johnson from the team.
Original drama series Longmire concluded its first season on A&E Network Sunday at 10p totaling 4.3 million viewers and 1.6 million with A25-54, a series record with this demo. At 9p, A&E aired the season three finale of The Glades which tallied 3.1 million viewers and 1.2 million among A25-54. Longmire is produced by Warner Horizon Television while The Glades is produced for A&E by Fox Television Studios.
Programming Notes: Looking ahead to the 11th anniversary of September 11, 2001, National Geographic Channel (NGC) will air two new documentaries on back-to-back nights: 9/11-The Firemen’s Story (wt) produced by Testimony Films premieres September 8 at 10p and 9/11: Voices from the Air from Darlow Smithson Productions airs September 9 at 10p.
After sustaining an injury in July during production, Kristin Chenoweth is exiting the CBS drama The Good Wife. Chenoweth will still appear in the premiere episode. The actress released this statement: “It is with deep regret to inform everyone that due to my injuries, I am unable to return to The Good Wife at this time. Getting better slowly, and thank you everyone for your concern.”
NBC’s Smash will reunite Sean Hayes with his former Will & Grace co-star Debra Messing. Hayes was tapped for a multiple episode run for season two of Smash playing Terrence Falls, a comedic TV and film star who is making his Broadway debut in the musical Liaisons.
Primetime soap Revenge on ABC cast Michael Nardelli in the recurring role of Trey, a preppy outsider who befriends Jack’s younger brother and then gets him in trouble.
Creators of the now canceled The CW’s Ringer, Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo sold a mystery-themed series to NBC. The network handed the project a blind script commitment to an untitled gothic thriller set in New Orleans involving “tradition, superstition and murder.” Synder and Charmelo will write the script and also serve as executive producers with TBD Productions’ Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan for Universal Television. Snyder and Charmello are also currently EPs on NBC’s midseason Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde drama, Do No Harm.
Oscar-winner Jodie Foster will direct and serve as executive producer of a new drama project for Showtime titled Angie’s Body. The plot centers on a smart, deadly woman who runs a family-based crime syndicate. Rob Fresco is writing the script and will also be an EP along with Russ Krasnoff and Foster. Sony Pictures Television is producing.
WE tv confirmed with Cynopsis Media that the network picked up a pilot for a reality series starring recent Olympic gold medalist, Sanya Richards-Ross. The pilot project originates from a development deal WE tv made with production company Good Clean Fun. The pilot was shot in Austin before Richards-Ross left for the London Summer Olympics and shows her training regime in addition to her personal life. Richards-Ross is married to Super Bowl champion Aaron Ross, who just signed a 3-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Casting Call: The longest-running daytime game show, The Price Is Right hosted by Drew Carey on CBS is launching its first-ever male model search. The search will air as a five-episode web series competition via PriceIsRight.com and Youtube.com/PriceIsRight with finalists revealed during the September 28 episode of The Price Is Right. Viewers will vote online for their favorite finalist online through October 4 with the winner receiving a one-week modeling gig on the game show. The search launches with an open casting call in Los Angeles on August 30 at KCBS Studios in Studio City, CA. Beyond Distribution is the international distributor for CMJ Productions’ crime series Fatal Vows which premieres at MIPCOM. Fatal Vows has 10 one-hour episodes and relates the stories of spouses who end up killing their partner. Commissioning broadcasters for the series include Investigation Discovery USA, Investigation Discovery Canada, Canal D Canada and AETN UK. The series will be available internationally to broadcasters at the end of 2012. Beyond is also launching the third season of The Will: Family Secrets Revealed, also from CMJ Productions.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: NBC notched another overall win Friday at 6.6/21 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. During 8p, ratings for NBC were not available so instead, Univision topped with Por Ella Soy Eva at 1.5/6 and ABC’s Shark Tank repeat was next at 0.9/3. NBC came back with a roar at 9p with Summer Olympics coverage at 5.9/20 followed by Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar at 2.2/7. NBC’s primetime Olympics ratings ticked up to a 7.1/23 at 10p and Univision remained in second place with a second hour of La Que No Podia Amar at 2.6/8.
