Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 14, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The 2012 Summer Olympics brought 219.4 million American viewers to the Games for NBCU, and subsequently set the record as the most-watched event in U.S. television history, according to Nielsen. The Closing Ceremony delivered 31.0 million average viewers on Sunday to mark the most-watched for a non-U.S. Summer Olympics in 36 Years, topping Beijing by 12%.
Overall, NBC generated an average national household rating of 17.5/30 over 17 nights in primetime to tie the 1988 Seoul Olympics as the highest-rated non-U.S. Summer Olympics since 1976. NBC Olympics Digital reports that it set multiple records with video streams, engagement time and page views, drawing nearly 2 billion page views and 159 million video streams over the course of the event.

According to TiVo, the top ten moments (not including Opening and Closing Ceremonies) during the Games that were watched by viewers were:
1) Aug. 2 – Women’s gymnastics all-around final official standings displayed. Gabrielle Douglas comes in first while Victoria Komova is brought to tears as she takes silver.
2) July 31 – McKayla Maroney makes a perfect landing in the vault netting a score of 16.233 in finals of women’s gymnastics team event
3) Aug. 2 – Gabrielle Douglas performs in the gymnastics artistic floor exercise event at the women’s individual all-around gymnastics finals.
4) July 31 – Gabrielle Douglas, on the uneven bars, nails a difficult transition from lower bar to upper bar and follows with a great landing.
5) Aug. 2 – Aly Raisman, becomes Team USA’s last hope for a high score on the balance beam in the women’s individual all-around gymnastics final.
6) July 31 – Michael Phelps loses his lead to finish second in the men’s 200m breaststroke.
7) July 31 – Anastasia Grishina of Russia loses her balance in a floor exercise landing.
8) Aug. 2 – Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte square off in the men’s 200m individual medley.
9) July 31 – The USA Women’s GymnasticsTeam USA watches the scoreboard to see whether they are the winners.
10) Aug. 2 – Gabriel Douglas performs on the uneven bars and scores 15.733 after deductions for a hop on her dismount.
Telemundo officially wrapped up the Olympic Games by more than doubling its 2008 Beijing Olympics audience totals among total viewers and adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. In addition, the channel scored a total cumulative viewership of 22.5 million total viewers through the 16 days of coverage, 42% more than the Beijing Olympics.
The Big East Conference is preparing for its upcoming media negotiations, hiring Bevilacqua Helvant Ventures to serve as the lead negotiator in the discussions. The company is led by co-founder Chris Bevilacqua and has negotiated contracts for college conferences, Major League Baseball teams and the other professional leagues.
Golf Channel reality series Big Break revealed this season’s new cast, which will mark the series’ 18th season on television. The show will take place at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia and return on Oct. 2 at 9p with the winner receiving an exemption to the 2013 Greenbrier Classic on the PGA TOUR, cash and other prizes. This year’s cast will span different backgrounds with several having “multiple victories on the various mini tours all over the world, while others are resuming their golf careers after stepping away from competitive golf.”
ESPN hired DJ Rob Swift to spin in-studio for ESPNU’s upcoming late-night entertainment show UNITE which debuts on Aug. 27 at midnight. Swift will become the first daily on-set musical element for an ESPN show and the network’s first in-house DJ. Swift will mix his own beats using two turntables, in addition to overlaying music for the show.
VH1 yanked its upcoming reality series “Ev and Ocho” following Chad Johnson’s arrest Sunday night for domestic battery on his wife, “Basketball Wives” star Evelyn Lozada, according to reports. Johnson was also cut from the Miami Dolphins following the charge.
MSG Varsity announced that it reached agreements with the Public High School Athletic Associations for both Nassau County Section VIII and Suffolk County Section XI to continue broadcasting playoff and championship games on the high school-based channel. As part of the agreement, MSG Varsity will have the exclusive broadcast rights for Suffolk County Section XI playoff and championship games, as well as the rights to broadcast the Nassau County Section VIII playoff and championship games. MSG Varsity also has the exclusive broadcast rights for the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Athletics Association.

The Pac-12 Conference locked in Dr Pepper as the official soft drink of the 2012 and 2013 Pac-12 Football Championship Games. The two-season sponsorship agreement between Dr Pepper Snapple Group and the Pac-12 will run through December 2013 and give the beverage “high-profile advertising” on the new Pac-12 Networks, as well as opportunities for strategic in-store and on-package promotions and on-field activation at the Pac-12 Football Championship Game.
According to Wildfire, Olympian Gabrielle Douglas easily led pack in social media percentage growth during the Olympic Games, with 582,912 Facebook fans as of Aug. 12, for a 3960% change compared to July 27. Fellow gymnast Marcel Nguyen took second with a 2476% uptick to 194,962 fans while Camille Muffat took the bronze with a 2320% surge to 124,294.
Sportsman Channel reports that its Facebook engagement rates are up 300% while the network’s number of users grew by almost 200% since January.
Comcast SportsNet announced that CSNPhilly.com added veteran Eagles beat writer Geoff Mosher to serve as an Eagles Insider for the site. Mosher will join Ray Didinger, Reuben Frank and Derrick Gunn to provide fans with daily coverage of the Philadelphia Eagles, on-air, online and mobile.
Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic named veteran sports reporter and editor J. Michael Falgoust to serve as Ravens Insider for the network’s digital media platforms such as CSNbaltimore.com as well as to contribute to its news and game-day programs.
