NBC handed second season renewals to three reality series: The Marriage Ref, Minute To Win It and Who Do You Think You Are?. To date, The Marriage Ref is posting a 3.0/8 among A18-49 and averaging 7.2 million total viewers on Thursdays at 10p; Minute To Win It is averaging a 2.0/6 A18-49 and 6 million total viewers in its Sunday at 8p time period; and Who Do You Think You Are? is averaging a 1.6/6 with A18-49 and 6.8 million total viewers on Fridays at 8p.

FOX officially canceled the comedy ‘Til Death and has also taken the newer comedy Sons of Tucson off the air after airing four episodes. FOX will not put Sons of Tucson back on the air this season, opting to replace it with American Dad. The remaining eight episodes of Sons of Tucson will air this summer on Sundays at 730p.

As of April 1, Nielsen began television audience measurement in Puerto Rico, gathering data extrapolated from a randomly chosen sample of 500 homes representing all demos and regions of that country. Nielsen said more than 90% of the recruited homes agreed to participate which is apparently one of the highest of all the world’s TV ratings panels. Nielsen has already begun releasing overnight TV ratings to clients and at the end of April, will begin releasing the top ten time slots on a monthly basis. The island nation’s three largest broadcasters have signed on to receive the ratings data including WKAQ-TV, the Telemundo O&O; WLII-TV, the Univision affiliate; and WAPA-TV, an independent station in addition to a number of other clients.

Syfy’s double premieres last Friday included the spring debut of Stargate Universe at 9p which delivered 1.5 million total viewers, 936,000 A25-54 and 768,000 A18-49. Then at 10p, Syfy aired the US television premiere of Merlin season two with 1.3 million total viewers, 738,000 A25-54 and 553,000 A18-49 viewers.

CBS Sports tallied its highest ratings for the 2010 Final Four in five years on Saturday, as its coverage delivered an average overnight HH rating/share of 9.7/19.

Hispanic television network, Estrella TV announced it will serve up its first upfront presentation for the ad community with a seven-city “Infront” tour. Estrella TV’s tour, showcasing its programming and more for the 2010-2011 season, begins April 19 through May 21 and will visit Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and San Antonio. Estrella TV is owned by Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media).


USA Network declared its intention of continuing original series for the 2010-2011 television season, highlighting a development slate containing seven new pilot scripts. This summer, USA is also celebrating the fifth anniversary of its brand moniker “Characters Welcome.”

USA’s development slate includes:

  • A Legal Mind – A top Manhattan corporate lawyer on a recruitment trip hired the only person who impressed him: a smart but unmotivated college dropout. From Universal Cable Productions.
  • Robyn – A rich young woman decides to take from the rich and give to the poor. From Universal Cable Productions.
  • Gay Welch Project – Karen Burke, a suburban supermom with three kids, finds her husband has left town because he was in trouble with a mob boss. Karen gets busy and pays her husband’s gambling debt and becomes the mob boss’ new “fixer.” Gay Welch (Summerland) is writing; from Universal Cable Productions.
  • Stick – Plot is about Chris “Stick” Blake, an NHL player who got suspended from his team because of a hockey fight documented on YouTube. After attending court-ordered anger management classes, Stick decides to help people who are bullied. From Universal Cable Productions.
  • Untitled John Michael Higgins/Insurance Adjuster Project – From Steve Carell (The Office) and John Michael Higgins (Best in Show), the plot centers on Bob Welsh, a crusading middle-class insurance investigator. Produced by Universal Cable Productions.
  • Untitled Cullen Brothers Project – Two estranged brothers, with opposite personalities, are working together on the same FBI task force. From Universal Cable Productions.
  • The Velvet Hammer – Candy Carter returns home to Houston though is not the same Texas debutante as when she left. She is now divorced with two kids and is an FBI agent. Produced by Grand Central Entertainment with CBS Television Studios.

Lucasfilm Animation is developing a new animated series based on the iconic Star Wars franchise, though taking a more comedic look at the characters to see what they do when they aren’t overthrowing empires. Seth Green and Matthew Senreich will be involved with the creative product along with writer Brendan Hay. Jennifer Hill will produce with Todd Grimes who will also direct. The project has not found a network home, though another Lucas Animation series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs on Cartoon Network, while Green and Senreich’s series Robot Chicken, which parodied Star Wars in two episodes, airs on Adult Swim.

Zev Shalev was tapped as Executive Producer for the new syndicated series The Nate Berkus Show (wt) a co-production between Harpo Studios and Sony Pictures Television. The series is slated to premiere this fall, starring decorator and author Nate Berkus. Terry Murphy was also named a Co-Executive Producer for the show set to launch in New York in hi-def.

Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS didn’t fool viewers Thursday winning with a 3.0/10 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS ruled with Survivor at 3.5/13 followed by FOX’s Bones at 2.4/8. ABC took over at 9p with Grey’s Anatomy at 3.5/11 with CBS’ The Mentalist in second place at 2.7/8. CBS had the final say through 10p with CSI at 2.8/8 with ABC’s Private Practice close by at 2.6/8.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: Despite being a tightly packed ratings night, NBC won Friday and the A18-49 demo with 1.5/5, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe led with 1.6/6 while NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? placed second at 1.4/5. Also at 8p, ABC opened a new season of Wife Swap at 1.2/5 in fourth place. Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution on ABC and FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares repeat tied for #1 at 9p with 1.5/5 each with NBC’s Dateline just a step away in second at 1.4/5. NBC’s Dateline then turned the tables and won the 10p hour at 1.7/5 while CBS’ new series Miami Medical was a close #2 at 1.6/5.

Multi-platform advertising sales company, WorldLink hired Mark Archer for the newly-created position of VP/Sales Development. Mark will have oversight for the company’s sales efforts, working to increase sales opportunities for clients across multi-platforms in addition to business development, internal sales training and the company’s burgeoning number of digital media clients. Mark will also work closely with Greg Chassman, VP/Sales in supervising the daily operations of the sales department. Both Mark and Greg report to Dan Casey, EVP/Sales and GM.

615 Music, headquartered in Nashville with offices in Los Angeles, added Kio Novina as Director/Licensing.

Sophia Kelley joined Gospel Music Channel (GMC) as VP/Programming where she will manage program planning, scheduling and acquisitions along with promotion planning and scheduling. Sophia will report to Leslie Chesloff, EVP/Programming, GMC. Prior to this appointment, Sophia was VP/Programming Digital Platforms with Turner Broadcasting for TNT, TBS and TCM.
