Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

04/05/11

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 5, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

How Creative Should My Resume Be?

Disclaimer:  I am referring to the layout and such, not creativity with the facts of your work history.

There was a time, prior to everyone owning a personal computer, when creative resumes had more appreciation amongst hiring managers.  Having a different layout and with a wise choice of colors, these resumes often did their job of catching the eye of the reader.  But those days are over.  Since anyone can create a resume with splashes of color of all shapes and sizes, the creative resume has become a nuisance to most professionals that read them.

Even the artistic professionals should carefully consider the overly creative resume, and instead, allow your portfolio to wow them with your creativity. Let the resume wow them with your accomplishments.

That being said, there are some things you can do to create a resume that stands out from most of the others being read.

Font:  Stop using Times New Roman.  It’s been the default on many computers for a while, and people are sick of it.  Don’t go to script or another gimmicky font, just try something different that shows up well on a computer screen.  It is usually best to keep the same font throughout but make use of bold, italics and different sizes.  It’s best to keep the informational font size around 10 or 11.  Going lower than 10 on most fonts makes it too hard to read.

Alignment:  I prefer to read documents that are aligned to the left and not justified.  I don’t like center alignment, it makes the document too hard to scan.  Text being justified leaves uneven spaces between words and to me, looks unprofessional.

Bullet points:  Use them.  Remember that during the first stage of the hiring procedures, most resumes are scanned at best.  Bullet points will draw the attention of the reader, so bullet point the most essential information.

Underlining:  You should underline each section of your resume, though I have seen a black overline and a gray underline used to great effect in separating sections.

After reading your resume, making sure all the spelling and grammar is correct, look at it again.  This time, look at it for “skimmability.”  How easy is it to read and more importantly, does the essential information jump out from all the other information.

Splashing your resume with colors and different fonts may appeal to some, but for the most part, it simply appears as a depthless attempt to be noticed.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
What To Do in an Employment Gap
by Michael Pollock

“I’d never had a gap before and it was very new and very frightening.” This from a top-ranked executive producer of TV spots who had been laid off in the financial crisis.    “When I was first out of work I thought for sure I’m going to be everybody’s first call but there weren’t a lot of offers out there.  It took a lot to get up every day – but I got up enthusiastic and that just made a world of difference.”

A few months earlier, a friend from LA had called to see if she was interested in helping produce his feature film  for no money of course.  So now she called him back and told him she was in.  He asked her to do the production breakdown for NY.  “I said: Absolutely, not a problem.  But truthfully I had no idea what a movie breakdown was, so I went on Wikipedia – okay that’s a breakdown – then I went to the library and found books on how to produce movies. All of the sudden I was a movie producer, and it cost me nothing.    But then I wasn’t getting paid either.   But don’t forget, I was very available!”

She got up every day, sent out at least two or three emails to her connections within the familiar advertising industry “and then I’d get dressed as if I were running into an ex-boyfriend.  Seriously, this makes a big difference.  Because you know you don’t want to go out like a slob, you want to look professional, like you can run into anybody.  I would go to the library where there was free Internet and bathrooms.  I felt like I was somewhere, around people.

I was producing, doing what I loved doing.  Production is the same kind of mindset and the same tools whether you’re making a 30 second ad or a long format web video or a 90-minute movie. And I was learning a new way to do it. You meet a lot of people in the independent movie world and every one will give you some bit of advice, or put you in touch with someone. It was exciting to be part of something.

So what’s her advice to someone who has lost their job?  “Get up, get out there and do something. Anything. It doesn’t just land in your lap. Even if it’s not what you were doing before.  Even if it’s for no pay.  It kept me in the land of the living, it kept me busy and the new connections I made carried on even after I was back in advertising many, many months later.  I do think it’s a success story. Because as scary as it was it felt good when I was doing it, my little victories.  And it feels good now.”

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Michael Pollock

I understand what a job objective is on a resume, but also have read that they are somewhat outdated and something called a Profile has taken its place. What is the difference and could you supply an example?

We get too tangled up with the names we give this critical opening paragraph and we risk getting trapped into templated interchangeable resumes.  Is it a profile? Maybe that’s part of it.  Should it be an objective? The hirer is not in the least interested in your objective  the only objective he is interested in satisfying is his own.   So have an objective by all means  but that is for you to know not for your resume to state. So I can’t give you useful examples, as the objective or profile concept seem to me to be counterproductive.

But that opening paragraph is critically important.  It has to say in just a few lines what you offer to an employer and why they should care. It has to make them say  “that is just what I am looking for.” They should quickly be able to see that you have had successes in their field, that you have done good work on specific brands or projects and that your experience and skills and focus and passion set you apart from the pack.  That is the job of that first paragraph.  If you want to call it something (in your mind, not on the page) you could think of it as the Executive Summary for your resume.  The rest of the chronology should add flesh and corroborate. Who cares what it is called! Just make them drool.

I have read so many different articles on what a cover letter should be, can you provide a checklist of what a cover letter should cover and some suggestions on the order in which they are covered? I’m very confused.

The job of the cover letter is to get someone to want to read your resume.  First it has to say why you are writing, for example: I am most interested in talking to you about your Project Manager position.  And then quickly add why the reader should care – about you above all others.  It very likely will contain all or most of the paragraph you use to start your resume  this is the carefully crafted distillation of your value story that tells of your unique talents/experience. Don’t worry about repeating the same idea in the resume  many people on the hiring team will never see your cover letter. I hate to define templates  but here are the three basic elements:

1. Why should they read this because you are the perfect person to fill their Project Manager position

2. What you want them to do (feel)   see at once that you are the one – consider your application  schedule a meeting  whatever it is you want.  Get this up near the top in the cover letter so the reader knows what he should be thinking about.

3. Why you above all others?  What is the thumbnail of your skills/experience that sets you apart?

And most important: keep it short.
