MIPTV 2011

On the heels of SevenOne International selling its game show series You Deserve It to ABC in the US, the company has additionally sold the game show to Germany’s SAT.1. Broadcasters in Italy and the Middle East have also picked up the program.

Fine Living Network International announced several program premieres: Bazaar opened on April 1; Adventure Golf debuted on April 4; coming up are State of Style bowing on April 6; followed by Design School on May 2; and Color Splash on May 3.  Fine Living Network is available in more than 31 territories worldwide.

Sundance Channel Global will soon premiere drama series The Walking Dead as Rainbow Media Global picked up the rights to the series in France and French-speaking Belgium from Entertainment (eOne) Television.  The Walking Dead will premiere on Sundance Channel Global this December.  Furthermore, starting June 1, Sundance Channel Global will launch on Movistar Imagenio, Telefonica’s IPTV service in Spain.  Viewers of Movistar Imagenio will be able to access Sundance Channel Global on the service’s Family Package and it will be offered in both standard-def and hi-def via on demand.

Zinkia Entertainment purchased a 51% ownership stake in the kids and family entertainment company, CAKE.

This week, ITV Studios Global Entertainment debuts new entertainment series A Different Breed from Pulse Films at MIPTV.  The series, with 8 one-hour eps in hi-def launches on UK’s Sky1 this Wednesday and is about the world of dogs in grooming salons, kennels and vets and the eccentric people who work at these dog-focused places and the dog owners who treat their pets better than their children.

FremantleMedia is developing a new daily drama, The Clan (wt) which is created and produced by FremantleMedia Croatia and commissioned by RTL Croatia. The original drama is slated to premiere this fall telling the story of two families united against their will by a relationship between young lovers.

DCD rights announced DIRECTV acquired the drama legal series Rake produced by Essential Media & Entertainment. The eight-episode series was originally made for ABC Australia starring Richard Roxburgh.  Several guest stars appeared during season one including Rachel Griffiths, Sam Neill and Noah Taylor among others.

My view from MIPTV:  Whenever I come to this particular convention (tho here it’s known as a “market”), I’m always struck by the civility and the work ethic.  By “work ethic” I mean that meetings are scheduled every 30 minutes from breakfast meeting thru lunch, then post lunch thru dinner.  Most people are jamming in a dozen to 16 meetings a day, every day of the market.  Yes, sometimes they run late, but not too often.  Everyone seems to be completely on board with the 30m rule.  And then of course, there’s the civility — perhaps a nice breakfast, enjoy your coffee (you’ve heard me say before nobody, but nobody, walks around with a paper cup of coffee here), then later a good long lunch with clients or networking, but sit down, eat, enjoy, relax.  Then return to the Palais for more meetings during the afternoon.  Then meetings over cocktails and dinner with clients or again, networking, but always a lengthy enjoyable meal.  What is amazing is that so many of the international buyers may come to a US based “market” and attempt to do the same thing, only to find meetings often run long, people run late, and the unexpected glitches can mess with a perfectly organized schedule pretty quickly. There’s something to be learned here.
