Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 3, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
I read your column last week and though I appreciate the information, I am outraged that interviewers find it necessary to make anyone nervous during this time of economic woes.
Our life style has changed so much, I work so hard to find a job, but few companies are hiring.
If I don’t get a job soon I will have to sell my house at a rock bottom price and move to a much smaller place, just to avoid foreclosure.
My son had to pick a college not based on his achievements, but on what I could afford, or at least what I told him I can afford.
I worry about keeping food in the refrigerator, and clothes on my kids backs.
My wife and I already sold our cars, now we have just one used one.
My oil bill last month was $600. I can’t pay it.
I can no longer afford life insurance, and our health insurance covers almost nothing.
We had a tag sale just to pay some of our bills.
My wife had to ask the kids to wear most of there clothes twice, because of the electric bill.
Cell phones, laptops, tv’s, video systems, dining room set, anything of value, sold.
No sports for the kids, the equipment and gas are too much.
So when I go into an interview, with all this weighing on me, and an interviewer is going to play some game to see how I handle pressure? Come to my house, see how I handle pressure. Tell my son he can’t go to the school he deserves, see how I handle pressure. Look at what we are having for dinner, see how I handle pressure. Feel how cold my house is in the winter, seeing my children wearing their jackets at dinner, see how I handle pressure.
I know interviewers have a job to do, and I am not the only one in this situation. I’m not asking for charity, a hand out or even a hand up. All I am asking for is a fair shake at a job, without the games and a little bit of respect.
So if you’re looking to make me nervous, you’re too late. I’m terrified.

If your career success is based on the sum of the 5 most successful people you’re closest to, how successful can you potentially be? Most people surround themselves with people who are in the same place they are. So if you’re out of work, the 5 closest people to you tend to be in the same boat and have the same connections as you.
It’s time to expand your circle of influence. I stand by my statement that mentorship is the greatest strategy for getting work. The reason is because whether or not a mentor ever hires you is irrelevant, it’s learning from successful people. You may have heard me say, “Success leaves footprints.” I did not coin that phrase, I just pass it on because it’s true. Not only can mentors advise you on the fastest and most direct strategies for getting work, they also inspire you, give you new ideas, open doors that were once closed to you, and even put your mind at ease if you have some concerns about your future.
Every month I have the privilege of interviewing successful entertainment industry professionals for my Greenlight Mentor Program. I’d like to reveal some of the common themes these Greenlight Mentors share:
1. Age is not a deterrent. Many of the mentors I interview either reached success at a typically ‘older’ age or entered the industry after doing something else. They didn’t have hang ups about the “young hip It guy” or the “older experienced guy” as their competition, they just went for it. Do you get caught up in age? Do you worry about the sands of the hourglass?
2. People Get Fired. Yes, I’ve spoken to Academy and Emmy Award winners and nominees as well as successful working professionals you may not have heard of, and they get fired. But do they walk into their next interview and blurt it out? No. Do they wear it like a scarlet letter? No. Do they learn and grow from it? Yes. One of the Greenlight Mentors even thanked the woman who fired her because she realized she was complacent in her job. She went on from that firing to find her dream job.
3. Don’t Ask For Work Ask For Advice. I tell you this all the time, so I’m hoping that knowing that the Greenlight Mentors agree with me, will bring it home for you. When you are getting to know someone, ask for advice, ask for help, but if they don’t know you well enough to trust you with their reputation and their paycheck, and they are working on someone else’s big budget project, they are going to hire their “go-to-people,” it just makes good common sense. It’s nothing personal, but a reel and resume is not enough. Talent is not enough. There is too much at stake for a successful person to take a chance on an unknown. Are there exceptions? Of course. If you ask for advice, they will know you’re looking for work, and if there is the possibility of an exception, let it come from them.
4. Life Experience Is Key (Be a Storyteller). We are in the business of storytelling, so hone yours. When I interview Greenlight Mentors, they don’t answer me in lists of skills and attributes, they share stories, and in those stories are the gems that are revealed about their work ethic, skills, personal lives, and more. Instead of listing your talents to people, share a story that reveals your talents. Believe me, believe the mentors, people will pick up on more than you even realize, and they will be far more entertained.
5. Take Risks! Every mentor I’ve interviewed has taken risks over and over and over. For every successful person out there taking risks and pushing through a fear, there are 100 people who aren’t willing to, or are stuck in their fear and the “conversations with themselves” as to why they can’t or shouldn’t push through, and take a risk. Who do you want to be?
I’ve learned through the years, that hearing it from me, doesn’t have the same credibility as hearing it from mentors, so I implore you to get yourself some fabulous mentors, so you can be surrounded by 5 highly successful people.

1. Get 2 mentors this month and 5 next month and then the next. You won’t be able to help yourself. Conversations with successful passionate people are addictive!

Am I behind the times if my resume doesn’t have a hyperlink to a personal website or portfolio?
If you’re asking that question it means you know other people are doing it which means, yes, you’re behind. In this business you always want to be seen as a leader. If your resume is being compared to someone who has the hyperlinks, then they are seen as more current than you.
They are making it easier for the potential employer to get the information needed to make their decision. So instead of focusing on being behind, do everything you can to be a trailblazer and get hyperlinked!
I was thinking of putting up a Power Point presentation on my personal website, too cheesy?
I can’t answer that without seeing the presentation, so I suggest you find at least 10 people to show it to and ask what they think of it.
My question is what is your purpose for having it on your site? The trend right now is video. Is this a video that is marketing you or is it literally a presentation? Using video to introduce yourself and share your work is an excellent idea and I highly recommend it.

Shine America is launching ARDABAN, a dedicated entertainment business that will create and develop new formats for the US and the worldwide marketplace. ARDABAN will be headquartered in New York and led by Chachi Senior who was named Ardaban CEO. Prior to this appointment, Chachi was Co-President of Notional.
E! News added Melanie Bromley and Alicia Quarles to its editorial news team. Melanie previously worked as West Coast Bureau Chief for Us Magazine and will serve as Senior News Correspondent based in E!’s Los Angeles office as of this Monday. Most recently, Alicia was with the Associated Press as Global Entertainment and Lifestyles Editor and will begin her new role as Correspondent based in New York starting April 3.
Showtime Networks Inc. elevated Gary Garfinkel and Kent Sevener as Co-Heads to manage the network’s Acquisitions Department. Gary and Kent will be involved with evaluating, negotiating and acquiring feature films, documentaries, stand-up comedy, specials and music programs for all of Showtime Networks’ channels Showtime, The Movie Channel and Flix in addition to its multiplex channels. The duo will also oversee the company’s output deals with various studios.
Canada’s Peace Point Entertainment Group established the company’s international distribution unit, Peace Point Rights. The company also appointed Eric Muller as VP/International Sales and Acquisitions and Julie Chang as VP/Business Affairs and North American Acquisitions.
Endemol promoted Laurens Drillich to become Managing Director of Endemol Netherlands Media Group. Laurens will assume his new role on July 31, 2012 following the departure of Peter Adrichem who currently fulfills the functions as Managing Director of Endemol Netherlands Group and has announced his decision to exit the company. Laurens will supervise all of the company’s production brands including Endemol Netherlands, SNP Media, 625 TV Production, TVBV, HaagseBluf and S & V Fiction.
Herb Ford was added in the newly-created role as National AE for the Live Well Network based in New York. Herb will be in charge of national advertising sales for the lifestyle programming service that encompasses broadcast, online and wireless service for digital channels in local markets. Live Well Network is presently available to 60% of US TV households. Herb begins his new position April 2 and he will report to Emily Barr, who oversees the Live Well Network in addition to serving as President/GM of ABC-owned WLS-TV in Chicago.
Boulder, CO-based Victors & Spoils hired Chad Walker as Creative Director as well as Jen Miller and April Moore as Account Managers. All three positions are newly-created and reflect the company’s growing client roster and needs.
Mobile marketing company, Mogreet added Serena Ehrlich as Director/Marketing and Anthony Ward as Director/Sales. Serena and Anthony will be charged to continue Mogreet’s continued growth in the mobile marketing arena and in the mobile social sharing platform.
Los Angeles-based Brand Central LLC opened a New York office headed by Jodi Bogdanoff as Director/Licensing. Previously, Jodi was with 4Kids Entertainment Inc., Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and most recently Bravado International Group. In her new role, Jodi will report to Andrew Lelchuk, EVP/Sales and Marketing.
Wolff Olins, a worldwide branding consultancy hired Mike Abbink as Creative Director for its New York office. In his new position, Mike will be charged with leading creative teams for the agency’s New York clients while reporting to Todd Simmons, Executive Creative Director, Wolff Olins New York.
Digital distributor and platform for independent films, SnagFilms added D. Scott Karnedy to the newly-created position as Chief Revenue Officer as well as Jon Landa as SVP/Ad Sales. Based in New York, D. Scott will head advertising sales and marketing efforts for the company’s ad-supported website, platforms and mobile apps in addition to the Indiewire news site and blog network. Jon will spearhead ad sales for the company in the Western region and be located in Los Angeles reporting to D. Scott.
The Council for Research Excellent (CRE) has tapped three new members including Jeffrey Graham, Director/Advertising Research, Americas at Google; Judy Vogel, Managing Director/Insights and Analytics at Media Storm; and Tom Ziangas, SVP/Research at AMC Networks. CRE is comprised of top-level research professionals throughout the media and advertising realms who are dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practice of audience measurement methodology.
Prior to MIPTV, A+E Networks increased its international sales staff by naming Hana Zidek as Director/Content Sales, EMEA as well as upping Joanne Lim to Manager/Content Sales, Asia. Hana joins A+E from Lionsgate Entertainment and in her new position will be based in London reporting to Jonathan South, VP/Content Sales, EMEA. Joanne is based in Singapore where she will continue to manage program sales throughout Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Joanne reports to Ling Sze Gan, Senior Director/Content Sales, Asia.
During MIPTV 2012 in Cannes, Gabriel de Alba, Chairman of the Board of Directors at RHI Entertainment, Inc. revealed the company is rebranding as Sonar Entertainment, Inc. and has tapped Stewart Till as CEO. Stewart has been RHI’s co-interim CEO serving with Mike Corrigan and David Salzman since July 2011. Additionally, Stewart has been a member of RHI’s board of directors.
Beginning in May, Mauro Cavalletti, Head/Digital Creative Group at Mullen is joining JWT in Brazil in the new role as Chief Integration Officer (CIO). Mauro will additionally be a part of JWT’s board and he is charged with further merging together the Brazilian agencies of JWT Brazil, CASA and i-Cherry to continue their local digitization strategy.
