Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 2, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Minor League Baseball has a new CMO to go with its new marketing plan. The organization hired Michael Hand to serve as its Chief Marketing Officer, where he will be charged with leading the company’s Project Brand initiative. Hand becomes the first CMO in the organization’s 112-year history, and will be responsible for securing strategic partners; marketing and creative services; strategic brand and message positioning; and developing and implementing marketing programs. Hand joins MiLB after spending four years at IMG Worldwide in New York City, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President of Marketing & Strategy for the IMG College division. 

On the Air

Sunday’s coverage of Regional Finals of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on CBS continued the upward trend this season, drawing an average Nielsen overnight household rating/share of 8.0/19, which is up 25% over last year, according to Nielsen. The opening game pitting Michigan and Florida earned a 6.2/16, (up 17%) while Louisville/Duke scored a 9.4/21 (up 21%).

Around the dial, ESPN’s audience for Sunday night’s opening MLB game between the Astros and Rangers took a slight dip from the channel’s Wednesday night season opener a year ago but was still up from its first Sunday night game last season, according to Nielsen overnight numbers, with a 1.5 score.

Sportsman Channel is bringing in veteran programming executive Marc Fein to serve in the newly-created role of EVP, Programming & Production for the network. Fein head up the network’s programming expansion for the lifestyle. Fein most recently served as founder and president of his own TV sports and entertainment consulting firm, and previously serve as Executive VP of programming, production and business operations for Versus (now NBC Sports Network.)

Telemundo’s Liga MX matchup between Chivas and America on Sunday drew an average of nearly 2.6 million total viewers and close to 1.6 million adults 18-49, for spikes of 35% and 22% over last year, according to Nielsen. The Superclasico also was the top rated telecast among adults 18-49 in the time period in Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco, regardless of language.

With tomorrow marking the 2013 NHL Trade Deadline, NHL Network will simulcast TSN’s 10-hour flagship show, TradeCentre ’13, with coverage of every trade and every team. Hosted by James Duthie, coverage includes analysts, Insiders, former NHL players, coaches, and general managers, reporters and correspondents. Starting at 6p, the network will offer NHL Trade Deadline Day Recap to discuss how the transactions could impact playoff races. Kathryn Tappen hosts. A special edition of NHL Tonight, also hosted by Tappen, will then air at 10p.

ESPN broke ground last week on a new ESPN facility designed to unite the houses of ESPN Mexico (sounds like I’ve been watching too much GoT). The facility will be located in in Mexico City’s southwestern Periferico Sur neighborhood and is slated to begin operations in July 2014 where it will produce content for both the U.S. Hispanic and ESPN Latin North regions.

Just to clarify yesterday’s report, MLB Network Strike Zone will air live look-ins at games in progress on Tuesday and Friday nights, not games themselves.

Visa is extending its sponsorship of the World Cup in an eight-year deal worth more than $170 million, according to SBD, that will keep the company as the official payment services partner for the event and governing body FIFA through 2022.

Golf Channel and NBC are launching an expansive, company-wide initiative designed to honor fathers and father-figures across the country. Throughout the spring and leading up to Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16, the campaign will honor four lucky fathers and their sons or daughters with trips to Philadelphia to compete in the Golf Channel Father’s Day Open a celebrity-filled tournament on Monday, June 10 – along with a week-long experience at the 2013 U.S. Open Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. The promotion kicks off on GolfChannel.com.

North American and Russian hockey legends will face-off on April 13 at 1p at Prudential Center for a charity game that will benefit the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. All proceeds will support programs designed to address the unmet and still urgent needs of New Jersey communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Congratulations to Adam Zimmerman, President of Marketing for CSE, who has been selected to receive the 2013 University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Award. This honor recognizes graduates who “through their personal or professional activities” have made substantial contributions toward the quality of life of others.

Digital Fields

Yahoo! Sports launches a new online program, Dream Chasers, today that will showcase the stories of six young men looking to become NFL players. Produced by Yahoo!, the special six-part series follows the athletes-running twice a week-preparing for Draft Day. Athletes will include Dion Jordan, Kenny Stills, Kyle Long, Matt McGloin, Tony Jefferson, and Kenjon Barker.

Roster Moves

Jeff Cravens has joined Golf Channel where he will serve as General Manager of Golf Channel Digital, and oversee all strategic elements of the network’s online and mobile business, including Golf Live Extra. Cravens most recently served as a consultant for NBC Sports Group’s digital businesses, focusing much of his work on golf. Previously, he managed digital platforms for both ESPN and Turner Sports. Meanwhile, Mike Lowe has been promoted to Vice President, Product Development and User Experience and will now manage the various products and services encompassed within the GolfNow business.

GolfDigest.com named Molly Baldwin as the new Director of Editorial Operations for the site. Baldwin previously served as Group Director, Conde Nast Productions and will now direct GolfDigest.com and social media strategy, develop digital partnerships, and facilitate technology and design enhancements.
