Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The WB is back in beta from early May as a web and on demand entity and this time the Warner Bros. Television Group hopes to create even stronger connections with its target audience by utilizing the interactive capabilities of the medium. Right out of the gate ad supported TheWB .com will offer users more flexibility and customization that other studio-backed ventures, including online editing tools that allow users to clip their favorite scenes from full episodes to create mash ups. Distribution partners include Comcast, Fancast.com, AOL and Facebook. An application is in the works for the latter that will enable users to log on and view complete episodes of WB shows such as Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Smallville and Friends without ever leaving their profiles.

KidsWB .com is targeted a late August launch alongside TheWB.com, tapping into the libraries of Warner Bros. Animation, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and D.C. Comics. This ad supported site will feature:
- Thousands of embeddable, shareable videos
- More than 100 animation-themed games
- DC Hero Zone, offering videos, games and promotions around the superhero types
- A KidsWB Jr. section for the press-schoolers
- Wide distribution of KidsWB programs via Comcast VOD, Fancast.com and AOL
The WB.com will rely on Warner Bros.’ Studio 2.0 to provide a range of original interactive series created exclusively for the web. Projects in the pipeline include:
- Sorority Forever – a mystery/drama from director McG (T4, Charlie’s Angels) and Big Fantastic (the team behind Prom Queen)
- An untitled project set in the music world from Alexandra Patsavas (Gossip Girl)
- Chadam – a 3D animation project from Alex Pardee and Jason Hall of HDFilms
- Rich Girl/Poor Girl – a role reversal reality series from Laguna Beach creator Gary Auerbach
- Lockdown – a serialized thriller from Jeremy Littman and Morgan Grendel (Law & Order)
As part of a month-long 40-film tribute to the Chairman of the Board, Turner Classic Movies launched a Frank Sinatra minisite featuring trailers, merchandise and soon, the TCM Mood Machine – an embeddable video widget containing 14 Sinatra classics. Log on to host your own Rat Pack party or for a chance to win giveaways including a branded cocktail shaker and two martini glasses.
Girls have yet another community site at their disposal. Kids publisher Scholastic has built a site around character Allie Finkle (from the best selling Meg Cabot tween series Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls) asking young users to create avatars and come up with “rules” to live by. More than 18,000 peer-written rules have been submitted since the site launched two months ago.
A&E has put together a minisite to promote the 4-hour miniseries Andromeda Strain, premiering Memorial Day May 26 from 9 pm ET/PT. From May 5 users can log on to play a 4-level game challenging them to uncover biological threats before they spread “virally.”
Bluehighways TV landed a carriage agreement with Verizon’s FiOS TV. It has been offered as a VOD option on the service since Dec. 2007.
PR Firm Edelman unveiled the Edelman Studios at the Tribeca Film Festival yesterday, a virtual talent agency/studio designed to develop TV shows, shorts, web series and feature films. Edelman clients Burger King, Butterball, Expedia and Kraft’s Philadelphia Cream Cheese have signed on to sponsor an initial wave of “studio assignments” that may turn into multiplatform projects.
Video collection site Vodpod completed a redesign, improving sharing and networking features and simplifying its video browsing interface. Last week the site collected its 1 millionth video from over 3,5000 sites.
Contest-driven online entertainment studio Filmaka.com awarded 21-year-old Nuru Rimington-Mkali the chance to direct his first feature film, which Filmaka will produce. And I refuse to forget won it for him.
FremantleMedia and Heavy.com are teaming up to launch LoveRace in late 2008, an interactive UGC contest/online show format in which male participants (and audience members) compete to win the “ultimate dream date.”
Voom HD Networks struck a deal with Amazon.com to begin offering home video titles of its original series and programs on the site beginning this summer. Nearly 50 titles from Voom’s Rush HD, Treasure HD, Gallery HD, Ultra HD, WorldSport HD, Gameplay HD and Equator HD channels will be available.
Verizon added 263,000 net new FiOS TV subscribers in Q1, bringing its subscriber base up to 1.2 million customers. Such success is bringing out attack ads from cable providers, points out WSJ. Verizon earned $1.64 billion during the quarter – up 9.8% from a year ago – attracting more higher end wireless customers with its all-you-can-gab $99/month plan.
The AP selected Transpera to power its planned mobile video news service, which is getting ready to launch in the coming weeks.
24/7 Real Media is deploying a new psychographic targeting technique allowing brand advertisers to target consumers online according to personality types known to drive certain behavior. The system was developed by Mindset Media.
Cartoon Network is capitalizing on the hype surrounding the next Indy Jones movie with a CGI animated short from Lego called Indian Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Brick. The 4-part spoof premiers on Cartoon Network’s Saturday morning Toonami block on May 10, but a sneak preview is up now on CartoonNetwork.com.
Mad City Wisconsin’s Capital Times became the latest mid-sized paper to give up print in favor of an online edition, declaring the paper will become “a daily newspaper of the sort Americans will know in the 21st century.” It’s been a tough 6 months for most major papers, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations numbers. Many papers saw daily circulations plunge including The New York Times (-3.9%) and The LA Times (-5.1%). Belo’s Dallas Morning News experienced a 10.6% drop to 368,000 subscribers. Only two top 20 papers saw gains – Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal and Gannet’s USA Today.
OpenTV hired Comcast Spotlight SVP/Technology Paul Woidke to join the company in mid-May as SVP & GM of its Advanced Advertising group.
TV discovery site MeeVee is one of the most beautifully designed entertainment listings interfaces we’ve found, making it simple to search for, track and manage TV content on multiple platforms. It will reach a milestone of 2 million unique users this month (according to ComScore data). The Burlingame, CA start-up is getting traction with UGC, community features and “interest channels” around specific shows, as fans of a show tell others about the site, and so on and so on. MeeVee, rumored to be in acquisition talks with several suitors, has done a great job of adding these social networking features without overshadowing its core competency.
