Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 27, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Why Presentations?
Great communication skills are highly valued by the business community and expected of CEO’s. Where better to showcase your communication expertise, than giving a presentation? How many of you have sat through endless amounts of bad presentations? Okay, put your hands down, I’d like to see the sun again. But remember how pleased and stunned you were when you sat through a presentation that was funny, informative, and brief. It is so rare in the business community, that when it does occur, you want to tell the world. Networking.
How to create a great presentation:
- The old rule still applies: Be brief, be brilliant, be seated. Ten to twenty minutes is best, with Q&A afterwards.
- Nothing replaces enthusiasm. Believe in what you are saying and be passionate about it.
- Know you stuff, anticipate questions, have defendable answers ready but make sure you listen carefully to the questions. If the audience is hearing responses that don’t specifically answer the question, they’ll lose interest. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t fake it, tell the audience you don’t know.
- Make sure you have a backup plan in case equipment fails. Too many times a good presentation has gone bad because someone forgot a wire.
- Practice your presentation and when you’re done, practice some more. If the audience doesn’t believe in you, they won’t listen to you.
- Many presenters try to adopt a persona during their talk. This rarely works. Be yourself, it’s the best way of connecting to your audience.
- Dress at least equal to, if not more formal, than your audience. It’s hard to go wrong in formal business attire.
- Remember the only difference between being excited and nervous, is your point of view. Use the energy.
- Start off with the big picture: Here is our problem, now let’s look at the solution.
- Being too technical during a presentation will distract and exhaust the audience, try to avoid it if possible.
- Your presentation should accommodate all types of learners. They should hear, see and read the information.
- Unify your information with a story. People will remember much more information if it is in a story format.
- Using humor is important, but be careful. I was at a conference once where the speaker (I kid you not) started with a joke about hemorrhoids … his hemorrhoids. Thirty seconds into his presentation, we all hated him. Use humor if you’re funny and can control yourself. Otherwise, attempts at humor, like in the situation above, can be seen as pandering and pathetic.
- Know your material well enough that you can look at the audience while speaking. Who wants to watch someone read notes?
- If you need help with your presentation, find a high school teacher. No one has a tougher audience.
- PowerPoint. Unless you have extensive Powerpoint skills, don’t. They are this century’s equivalent of a film strip, and film strips stink. Unless you can bring something new to the table, try your best not to use PowerPoint.
- But if you must use PowerPoint …
- Don’t put more than one idea onto any one slide
- Never fill a slide with text
- Use photos over clip art, and video over photos.
- Use PowerPoint as sparingly as possible, death by PowerPoint is a real thing.
Giving a presentation is your chance to show all in attendance that you are a great communicator. If your presentation is well received, you’ll be asked to give more presentations, to larger audiences. What a great way to network your abilities.
Economic News
Who’s hiring? A lot of companies. In recently released statements, Intel announced plans to add 2,000 jobs, Sears … 22,000, New York Life … 3,500 and JPMorgan Chase nearly 9,000 jobs.
Better than expected profits have restored confidence within many companies to the point of creating or re-opening jobs that were lost during the recession. Experts believe that the Technology sector will be particularly aggressive in hiring due to the cutbacks in research and development over the past eighteen months.
Next week: The Late Night Resume.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
The more you understand about what managers are thinking, the better you’ll be placed to get the job you want and to advance once you are in there.
“Without constant revitalization, minds can start to wander,” says Aaron Harvey, Partner/COO of digital agency Purple, Rock, Scissors of Orlando and New York, as we talk about the special issues related to managing creative staff. “If you don’t have a revival on a quarterly basis then people do start to complain. The conversations start very quietly with whispers.”
“The only way to mitigate that,” he says, “is to get involved one-on-one with your employees on a personal basis so they can let out the things they are thinking and you can do a temperature check and quash the issues before they become a problem. Otherwise unhappiness can spiral out of control very quickly.”
“Information is also key – when people are disconnected strategically – when they don’t understand the direction of the company and are not invested; when they don’t know about new business pitches, or a new sector the company is pursuing; if they are siloed off – this is a cause of discontent.” He tells me that communication with the staff is “a two-way street. We open up dialog through social space. We have an online area in a Basecamp where we get ideas from staff – but this needs nurturing, sometimes it is active, but sometimes it goes quiet.”
“To motivate better work, we have to play to how they like to do it; give them freedom to get in the zone and not just have to stamp against the clock; give the freedom to work from home or the beach letting them know that it is due on Friday,” Harvey told me. As the company grows, things get more complex: “We have to empower mid-level people to find a way that says: If you rock this out for me over the weekend here’s a little reward.”
Harvey says that he believes there’s an inbred mentality in ad agencies to exploit their employees. “We hire out of school: super-green, super-hungry. We give them the experience and we make them work. We are a deadline driven industry – so when we hire them, we tell them they may have to work a 40-hour week or an 80-hour week that is the nature of the beast. Every ad agency has a foosball team. I am a major advocate of the bonding that comes with this. It is good to be able to take a break at 6 o’clock and play foosball together. It makes it that much easier to get back to work later.”
In my next article you’ll learn what Aaron Harvey had to say about giving promotions and how he recruits new employees.

How does an unemployed mid-management guy like myself, know when the economy is turning around. I read all the articles, listen to the experts, but what signs do I look for other than getting hired?
I suggest that you focus your attention on your own business niche and learn what you can about the companies where opportunities for you are likely to arise. Learn what they are developing, what their new projects and clients are and what is happening inside them.
I have been working with a number of media businesses doing similar work this past week, and the stories from firm to firm are radically different: generalizations from the broader economy do not apply. One company is making money hand over fist, adding workforce and expanding studio and office space. Others are in negative cash flow, furloughing staff and trying to sublet and otherwise cut costs. This has to do with many factors including capitalization and management chops and biz dev that you could be researching.
Network with current or past employees. Read the trades and company press releases and see what is changing and check their hiring/firing patterns. You will find valuable indicators and signposts as to which companies are turning around and so are likely to need you; and you should get some solid clues as to how to position yourself. Bottom line is that there is really no direct correlation between the state of the economy at large and your getting a job.
I’m pretty sure my boss does not like me, though my work has always been complimented. Should I remain silent about this awkward issue, talk to him about it, talk to someone else? I really believe it’s personal, and it makes me feel uncomfortable, but what if I am wrong and do talk to him? Doesn’t that make me look like an idiot? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If your boss is making you uncomfortable by demonstrating his dislike in an inappropriate way then you should talk to someone in HR. I do not recommend that you ask him directly why he doesn’t like you: this will not be productive. But I do suggest that you go to him and say that you would like a performance review and please could you set a time to meet with him for this. This review is not going to overtly address his personal likes and dislikes, but it is likely to uncover issues that pertain, and it gives you the opportunity to ask how you could improve your performance. This exchange may elicit what you need to know. If this doesn’t clear the air, then the next step could be to ask for transfer to another group.
