Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
04/26/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 26, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
It’s The Little Things That Can Make A Big Difference.
In past editions, I have covered many strategies concerning the interview. This week, I’m going to write about the small things, the things that people often forget.
One of the few things you have complete control over is what you wear. Make it good.
Make sure you know how to pronounce the name of the person you’re meeting and the receptionist. Thank the receptionist, by name, on the way out.
Mind set: What can I do for you and your company…
Understand what you can specifically bring to the company, and sell it.
Understand what makes you unique, and make sure you communicate it clearly to the interviewer.
Know the mission statements of both your past and prospective employer. If not asked, you can reword and work their philosophy into yours.
If asked, accept water. It gives you something to do with your hands, and if you need time to think, take a sip.
Ask for the interviewer’s business card. After leaving the office, check to make sure all contact info is on the card, if not, ask the receptionist for the address so you can send a thank you letter.
Don’t try to fake it, ask for clarification if you don’t understand something.
Ask about why the last person left, but if the interviewer side steps the question, leave it alone.
Be patient in answering your questions, it’s better to be smart than fast.
Are you nervous? No, I’m excited.
Blog, blog, blog. This is your portfolio.
Exercise before hand or whatever makes you calm.
Though difficult to decipher, understand the hiring manager may not be looking for the most qualified, but the best fit. Sometimes they are not the same thing. Use this knowledge to your advantage.
Without the use of pom poms, make sure the interviewer knows you’re enthused about this opportunity.
If you are unemployed and the interviewer asks why, tell them in an honest and brief manner. Do not over explain.
Talk with passion, or lose the job.
Don’t forget to smile. Nervous people often don’t smile, a smile may make you stand out.
Finish the interview with three good reasons why you should be hired, and thank the interviewer for their time.
Next Issue: Bad Advice
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
“There is no story without a listener.” So says filmmaker, storyteller and MBA David Sauvage. He told me there are two ways people write the story that is their resume or business plan.
“In the first they think: What material do I have and how can I assemble it and say the things that I think are important? Then they assemble that material prioritizing the things they think are important and hand them off to the person they want to read it: who says huh, ok, and just maybe: tell me more. The truth is nobody actually cares who you are or what you’re trying to say.”
But according to Sauvage, the good storyteller approaches it immediately from the perspective and emotions of the person listening to the story. “They say to themselves: If I’m the listener what is going to engage me the most? The question should not be: what is this resume and what are the important facts about it? That’s the wrong place to start from. The question should be: how can I get somebody excited about this resume?”
Even though you might not have met your listener, you still need to have one in mind, “otherwise your unconscious is assembling some kind of arbitrary audience derived from your insecurities,” says Sauvage. “When I read incoming communications from people I often have to ask myself: Who do they think I am and what is it they want me to feel? Then I end up having to do their work for them. Who wants to work with somebody when you’re already doing their work? That’s already your nightmare.”
It is critical to have your listener in mind when picking the elements of your story. “People tend to report things according to the amount of emotional charge they have. If you have slogged through some enormously difficult project and managed to pull it off at the wire, then that’s going to occupy a large stake on your resume irrespective of the experience of the reader. It could be that the thing you did in 5 minutes, putting together some deal that to you was super-easy, is actually the single most impressive thing you’ve ever done from the listener’s point of view. “
So his advice: “Stop looking at it from your own small prism and look at it from the point of view of the other person. All of a sudden things will open up. Things will get easier.”

Supposing, and I am, that most applicants are following the general advice given by the Cynopsis crew on resume writing. Profile rather than objective, bullet points, etc. If most people are doing this, how can I make my resume stand out if my experience is fairly average for my industry?
Internalize all the advice you are given, then put it aside it and create your very own resume that paints a strong picture of a unique candidate. This means not just a list of the skill sets indicated in the job spec and which many candidates will tend to parrot. The first paragraph must compel the hirer to HAVE to keep on reading it has to distinguish you powerfully from all other applicants and I am not averse to adding your own style to bring life to your “average” experience.
So if your specific career highlights are not strong enough (though surely there must be some success that only you could claim) you might describe some powerful work habit that will add strength to your pitch. I recently saw great results from a resume opener that was bursting with colloquial enthusiasm, energy and personality. It broke through the boring usual and hirers responded.
But don’t forget that the written resume is just one component of your campaign to get hired. Advocates within the organization can also be most valuable and you should put a lot of energy into finding one to speak up for you. Their passion for your cause can get your resume pulled out of the pack.
Cover Letters are still a bit of a mystery to me. Is there any way you can provide a schematic as to what I should be trying to accomplish with each paragraph I write?
Assuming you have had no prior communication, then the first sentence should indicate why you are writing: e.g. I’m applying for the Project Manager position and my resume is attached. The second sentence should say why the reader should give a damn: e.g. I have achieved such and such specific exciting and relevant triumphs at this impressive and relevant company. The third sentence should indicate something else that you offer or have achieved that no one else can say. The fourth should say that you are looking forward to hearing back from them and will be available for interview at the drop of a hat.
Well that is the general idea: Why are you writing, and why should they care about you above all others. Keep it short and strong note that I used the word “sentence” to answer your question about “paragraphs.” Don’t get hung up on that, but do keep it concise imagine they are reading it on a Blackberry. The cover letter is the trailer that gets them to want to read the resume.
