Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, April 26, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC has plans to shake things up this summer, including new time periods for Desperate Housewives and Lost, four new alternative series, the return of Wife Swap with new episodes and the big time launch of its limited series set during the Roman Empire, called Empire.  According to Daily Variety, ABC will use the largely male audience of its NBA coverage to promote Empire, which will premiere on June 28 at 9p, and airing thereafter on Tuesdays at 10p for four additional weeks. Also debuting this summer is Dancing with Stars – think American Idol with dancers – on June 1 at 9p; The Scholar premieres on June 6 at 8p; Welcome to the Neighborhood, an unscripted series, launches in July; and Brat Camp launches in July.  Saturday nights will be devoted to the Wonderful World of Disney and will include the broadcast premiere of Bambi. Desperate Housewives will move to Sundays at 10p in late June or early July, opening up a nice hammocked time period following EM: Home Edition at 9p.  Lost will also move to a later time period – Wednesdays at 10p beginning on June 1.   Supernanny will move up to 8pm on Wednesdays as of June 1; and Wife Swap returns in the 8p slot in July.  ABC will launch a Monday Movie, kicking off on Monday, June 6, with The Ring.  The basic idea of moving shows from earlier to later time periods and vice versa, is to have them sampled by a new set of viewers who may have missed them the first time around.

Bob Schieffer, news anchor who took over where Dan Rather left off last March, plans to retire on his 70th birthday, which is a little less than 2 years from now.  That gives the CBS about a year and a half to figure out who’ll sit in the chair weeknights at 630p for the CBS Evening News.

Season Finale:
CBS:  CSI on May 19 – expanded to 2 hours

FX‘s drama series Rescue Me will return for a second season, set to premiere on June 21 at 10p.  New to the cast is Lee Tergesen as a recurring character; and Diane Farr has been moved up from recurring to regular cast member.

Mark Burnett Prods will be knocking on network programming doors in the next weeks to talk about a new unscripted series, tentatively titled Giving Hope. The show travels the country in search of those who have lost hope in the midst of a personal crisis, i.e., financial. The show will profile these folks, and then try to help them find a way out from under their current hardships.

ABC‘s description of its Primetime Live Special “Fallen Angel” says it will “…explore explosive claims about behind-the-scenes activities at American Idol.” The special airs on May 4 at 10p with reporter/co-anchor Jon Quinones.

Coming to a cable system near you this year is PetNet Television, a network dedicated to the health and happiness of America’s pets and pet parents. The service will be available 24/7 via cable, satellite, VOD and online (petnet.tv), with both original and acquired programming including entertainment, news, health, adoption, services and advocacy content.   PetNet was founded by American Ingenuity, Inc., and headquartered in Washington DC.

Dr Pepper has expanded its long-term association with college football with an agreement with ABC Sports and the Atlantic Coast Conference making the carbonated beverage brand the title sponsor of the newly established ACC college football championship game for the next five years, beginning with the championship game slated to air on ABC, December 3, 2005.  Dr. Pepper, which will also maintain its title sponsorship of college football’s Big 12 and SEC championship games, will introduce an initiative involving college football fans in activities throughout the year.  Dr. Pepper sponsorship will feature media within regular season conference games on ESPN and ABC Sports networks, consumer promotions sweepstakes, and localized promotions.  Dr. Pepper is a brand in the Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages family.

He’ll develop business opportunities for Fox involving emerging digital distribution platforms like video on demand, digital video recorders and Internet Protocol-based media, while likewise identifying digital content generation, content protection and similar production-related opportunities.

Comedy Central has named Val Boreland as VP/Program and Promotion Scheduling, reporting to David Bernath, SVP/Programming. Val will join COMEDY CENTRAL on April 25 and will be based at the network’s New York headquarters. She’ll oversee the network’s program and promotion scheduling including the network’s VOD offerings.  She will also contribute to long-term strategic planning at the channel and the launch of new digital platforms.

Liane Ramirez Swierk has been upped to Vice President with Goodman Media International, Inc.  She will be based in the New York office.

Lenny Bart has been upped to EVP/Administration, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. In his new position, he’ll continue to be in charge of administration for the entire division, with direct responsibilities over domestic television distribution finance and accounting, contracts, business systems and clearance validation, while also being closely involved with the operations and activities of syndication media sales and technical operations.  He will also continue to serve as a key representative to other areas within Warner Bros. Studios, including business affairs, MIS and human resources as well as with other sister Time Warner companies such as Turner and HBO.

Telemundo has upped Thelma Abril to VP/General Manager of Phoenix’s KDRX and Tucson’s KHRR.  She will report to Ibra Morales, Telemundo Television Stations’ president.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC led the way on Sunday night by doubling its closest competition – 6.9/18 A18-49 over #2 CBS with a 3.5/9, according to fast affiliate numbers from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC trailed CBS with a 2.7/7, followed by Fox 2.1/6 and WB 1.2/4.  At 7p Fox was in front with a combo of Simpsons/Malcolm averaging a 2.7/9, besting both ABC and CBS which averaged an 8 share.  At 8p ABC’s EM: Home Edition won the hour with a solid 6.7/17, well ahead of CBS’ 3.7/10 for Cold Case.  At 9p Desperate Housewives makes everyone else look desperate, posting a 10.0/23, and while perhaps technically a clip show with extras, the show sounding beat its closest competitor – CBS with a 3.8/9 for the first hour of Locusts.  Grey’s Anatomy held tough for ABC at 10p with an 8.1/20, on par with the previous week.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1990 – In Australia, an area twice as large as the state of Texas is submerged underwater as a result of extensive flooding.

Answer to yesterday’s Trivia Question: What does The Partridge Family, Bewitched and the movie Lethal Weapon all have in common?  THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY HOUSE is the same as GLADYS KRAVITZ HOUSE (across the street from the Stephens on Bewitched), and the same house, this time Danny Glover character’s house, they BLEW UP IN LETHAL WEAPON.  Kudos to: Cliff Matis-Scripps Networks/Boca Raton; Jennifer Hayoun-Saatchi & Saatchi/NY; Jim Mason-Charter Media/Grand Rapids; Lee Alexander-Good Morning America/NY; Tim McNamara-WXIN, WTTV/Indianapolis; Brett Calvert-KSAT/San Antonio; Randy Wilkes-Kaleidoscope Promotions/Nashville; Chuck Lomis-Starz Ent Group/Englewood; Dave Bogard-Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures/Burbank; Joel Metzger-Bell Tower Prods/LA; Aisha Wofford-KPXN/Glendale; Patrick Wiegers-Spelling TV/LA.

Psychic Detectives
When five senses aren’t quite enough…

Question: What did the Psychic Detective hear?

Today’s Trivia Question:
Who said:  “If I’m gonna be an old, lonely man, I’m gonna need a thing,  you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I’ll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y’know. Crazy Snake Man. And I’ll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids will walk past my place, they will run. “Run away from Crazy Snake Man!,” they will shout.”?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)

In time-honored movie-tradition,
We’d like to thank each and every one of the million viewers
who are making this year our best ever.
(**and in a break from time-honored movie-tradition, we’ll refrain from naming each and every one of them.)

Across every daypart, AMC is experiencing double-digit growth within our key demographics.
We’re getting misty here…
