Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. Happy Earth Day!
Sony is getting ready to launch its own online video service through the broadband-connected PlayStation 3 console as early as this summer, reports the LA Times. The service, which would compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform, would offer standard and HD movies & TV shows for download in an open standards format allowing them to be viewed on a range of devices including, of course, Sony’s own handheld the PSP.
A new animated series called Perfectland premiers on Think.MTV.com and MTV Mobile today as part of a wide-reaching go green initiative rolling out across MTV screens large and small. Other events and content include:
- Behind the scene videos of Real World: Hollywood, the first season staged in a green house
- MTV News interviews MySpace’s Tom Anderson about the social network’s green initiatives
- MTV’s Choose or Lose citizen journalists cover this past weekend’s 8-city Green Apple Festival produced with Earth Day Network
Fox.com will launch a newly-redesigned website tomorrow, featuring full episode streaming of prime time shows such as House, Bones and Prison Break more prominently, reports TV Week. The move is part of an effort to emphasize online video ad inventory heading into the Upfront as the network jockeys for a slice of the $2.3 billion of ad revenue pie expected from broadcast and cable network web sites, according to Convergence Consulting estimates.
Warner Bros. Television and Time’s Essence Magazine are teaming up for a series of new African American women-targeted multiplatform content initiatives, including a new video-centric Essence.com planned for this summer that will serve to incubate new shows for television under the Telepictures banner. An original digital daily entertainment news show for Essence.com called Extra on Essence will kick off the partnership.
Disney-ABC unveiled the beta redux of SOAPnet.com, expanding to include coverage of entertainment, celebrities, beauty and fashion happenings. New community functions include editorial commenting, friending, polls, message boards, RSS feeds and newsletters. SOAPnet also launched yet another new vertical online ad network last week, cobbling together 45 like-minded sites.
A couple of prominent financial sites have also updated things. News Corp.-owned WSJ.com (which is still charging for most of its content) is sporting a new look to go along with changes to the print edition, the most noticeable of which is a more interactive Opinion page section. Forbes.com has undergone a complete redesign as well, featuring a cleaner look, a new video player and new community recommendation features.
CBS’s Entertainment Tonight and The Insider will be the first to entertainment magazine shows to be broadcast in HD beginning this September, reports B&C.
GolTV scored the US and Canadian rights to broadcast the 2010 World Cup qualifying matches of the Italian National Team as well as 6 of Italy’s friendly matches.
TV Guide Network rebranded its ad-supported VOD barker channel as TV Guide Network On Demand, which provides news and behind-the-scenes content to VOD viewers. The service is also planning to roll out original content from next month, including minisodes of “Making News” and a newly ordered comedy series from internet impresarios from Rhett & Link.
Revision3, the home of original web shows like Diggnation, signed distribution deals with Hulu, Joost, Tivo, Break.com and Revver.
Online broadcast news network MediaScrape closed on second round financing of $3.2 million. The site, which distributes video news content from BBC News, CBC News and others, recently completed a content/advertising integration with Google Maps.
Netflix added 3 more (unnamed) set-top partners to its streaming video-to-the TV project, according to CEO Reed Hastings in an earnings call, who join previously-announced LG Electronics. Netflix now offers over 9,000 movies and TV shows for online rental.
Creative folks should have an easier time developing interactive content for the Sony-developed Blu-ray format. Related Content Database (RCDb) unveiled its BD Live Platform, offering studios and developers online services tools to create complementary content such as games, contests and dynamically-updated trailers, subtitles and bonus content.
D-Link’s latest wireless PC-on-TV device will integrate with video sharing site Veoh.com through a pre-loaded VeohTV interface, offering searchable access to thousands of branded and user-generated videos.
Paul Allen’s Digeo entered into a patent license agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide to deploy its IPG guide template in set tops and PC platforms after settling an intellectual property dispute.

MySpace is testing a Community Builder Platform, designed to help advertisers create online communities around their brands. Advertisers can choose between “self service” or “full service” options depending upon the level of customization needed.
Online video contextual ad platform Adap.tv launched an open source video ad platform to try to simplify online ad buys across multiple sources and formats. The company’s OneSource platform offers an interface allowing publishers to manage both in house and third party ads from more than 50 ad networks.

MySpace is promoting Jeff Berman from EVP/Marketing to the new post of President of Sales & Marketing, in charge of overseeing online marketing, content and programs, ad solutions, branded sales and the development of relationships with major advertising partners. He continues to report directly to Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace.
GroupM North America named Tom Dempsey to the new position of Director of Digital Investment, responsible for reviewing all business transactions with online suppliers. He will be based in New York, reporting to Rino Scanzoni, Group M Chief Investment Officer. Tom was Director of National Broadcast for Mediaedge:cia until now.
AMC tapped Joel Stillerman as SVP/Original Programming, Production and Digital Content overseeing production across all platforms. He will report to Charlie Collier, EVP & GM of AMC.
Turner Entertainment New Media hired Dennis Chang as West Coast Sales Manager for the group and National Sales Manager for NBA.com. Dennis, based in LA, reports Walker Jacobs, SVP of Turner Entertainment New Media Ad Sales.
Music veteran Russ Rieger joined SpiralFrog as VP/Strategic Initiatives, a newly created position. He will work on securing music, media and advertising partnerships for the ad supported music service, reporting to SpiralFrog CEO Mel Schrieberg.
Montreal-based MediaScrape appointed Chris Dingle as President and Chief Technology Officer. Chris was the founding CTO of 24/7 Real Media (sold recently to WPP for $637 million.)
Community site/content studio Filmaka (pronounced “filmmaker” with a Boston accent) officially launched yesterday with a new take on the amateur video site model. Founded by film producer Deepak Nayar (Bend It Like Beckham,) Filmaka is built around a proprietary competition engine powering monthly contests to a worldwide community of over 3,000 aspiring filmmakers. Inspiring the faithful is the promise of cash and the real currency in Hollywood – access. Mr. Nayar went to his filmmaker buddies such as David Lynch and Wim Wenders to serve as jury members and convinced Sandy Grushow to preside over the venture. The former Fox Television Entertainment Group Chairman agreed to leverage some of his industry contacts to help develop and monetize promising material that comes in over the transom. FX is sponsoring a pilot contest to find the next Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia crew. SAB Miller is hiring Filmaka members to create branded entertainment content. And William Morris has agreed to consider repping real talent that emerges from the site. An Emmy-winning actor is close to financing a pilot based on one of the 40 web series commissioned by the company, according to Mr. Grushow, which would make it the first big budget project incubated by Filmaka.
