And the latest reports from the MIPTV location in France — Apparently reports I mentioned yesterday of people buying ocean liner tickets is for real, though it’s the QM2, not the QE2.  Several in France have booked seats on the QM2 which sails to New York on 4/22, but one person tells me she’s #180 on the waiting list.  I guess not such a novel idea.  And the creative airline tracks people are taking to get home are astounding — many trips with five and six connections.  And how about this one — one guy at MIPTV tells me he drove to Rome to catch the Rome – Atlanta flight only to find out it had been cancelled.  Then he learned Alitalia had a Malpensa to JFK flight that had just been switched to a Rome departure – only the airline forgot to tell the US FAA … or for that matter any potential passengers the flight even existed.  After some last minute calls to the FAA, permission to fly was granted and a lowly 25 people boarded the 767 bound for NY.  Back in Cannes, Delta website indicates Tuesday Delta flight #0083 from Nice to JFK has been cancelled – but if you’re on it, please double check with the airline for any updates.  Make no mistake, Volcanic Ash is the great leveler — actor/comedian John Cleese took a $5000 cab ride to get back to the UK.   Now for the good news — BBC World News reports some airports within the European airspace will reopen this morning including some in the UK, France, Italy and Amsterdam.  Unfortunately, as the cloud moves a bit to the west, a couple of airports in Newfoundland have now been closed.  As for those still stranded in Cannes who apparently still have their sense of humor, I’m told this ‘moment in history’ has been given two nicknames – Magical Misery Tour and MIPcano.

Starring design expert and author, Nate Berkus, who has appeared regularly on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the series will air on all 10 of the NBC O&Os including WNBC/New York, KNBC/Los Angeles and WMAQ/Chicago. On most of the NBC O&Os, the new program will air in the afternoons paired with the talk show Ellen. Other stations picking up The Nate Berkus Show include Post-Newsweek’s KSAT/San Antonio and WKMG/Orlando; Hearst’s WCVB/Boston and KMBC/Kansas City; and Belo’s KMOV/St. Louis and KGW/Portland. The series is a partnership between Harpo Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

EPIX made a new distribution agreement with the Dish Network which will double the premium network’s reach to 30 million homes. The Dish Network offers EPIX a total of 14.1 million subscribers and it will be placed on the satellite provider’s hi-def package.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Litton Entertainment said its Litton Studios will produce six new original E/I series exclusively for ABC stations by September 2011. Station groups that have signed on to receive this new programming line-up of half-hour series include ABC O&Os, Cox, McGraw-Hill, Newport and Post-Newsweek. Litton continues to separately distribute other E/I shows such as Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild and Animal Exploration with Jarod Miller.

Bravo has a new original series in development titled Approval Matrix (wt) inspired by the weekly feature in New York Magazine. Approval Matrix is a studio-based, hosted show where four rotating pop culture gurus debate on which news items should be placed in the quadrants: Highbrow Brilliant, Highbrow Despicable, Lowbrow Brilliant and Lowbrow Despicable. The show will sport guest opinions and audience interaction. Ish Entertainment is developing this series for Bravo; Michael Hirschorn, Ethan Goldman and Wendy Roth will all serve as executive producers.

CBS has a new hidden-camera show in development headlined by Drew Carey, host of The Price Is Right, reports THR. The show’s title WTF! (huh? -ed.) translates to Wow That’s Funny! (ooooh -ed.) and Carey is partnering with producer Tom Forman on the project. A pilot presentation was shot on Saturday with Carey and a group of comedians who pulled some good-intentioned pranks on deserving people. One stunt will have them transform a late-night truck stop into a five-star restaurant for long-haulers. Raquel Productions in association with RelativityReal are producing WTF! with Jay Blumenfeld, Tony Marsh and Charlie Todd executive producing along with Carey and Forman.
