Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 19, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Started in 2001, The Taproot Foundation is an organization that uses the pro bono work of marketing and design professionals to help non-profits on a local, state, national and even on a global basis.
Offices are located in NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC. Unfortunately, since teams are expected to meet once a month, those who live outside these areas are not viable candidates for Taproot.
The core mission is “to lead, mobilize and engage professionals in pro bono service that drives social change.”
Why is this important to you? Taproot and organizations like it not only provide an invaluable service to non-profits, but also for the media professionals who are currently unemployed.
There is an application that is fairly extensive, so they can place you most appropriately. Taproot is looking for professionals with at least 3-5 years of experience and requires each member to dedicate a minimum of 3-5 hours per week.
Members are placed on a specific project, each project usually lasts 6-8 months but this can vary depending on the pace of the project.
While much of the work can be done at home, members are expected to meet face to face about once a month and everyone must attend an orientation process to become an active pro bono consultant.
Volunteers, (pro bono consultants) should not consider this venture an opportunity to learn new skills, but rather to help the non-profit organization they are assigned. However, there will be many opportunities to network with other professionals within the organization, through both the orientation process and once you become a member, through the Taproot Foundation intranet.
Taproot will consider but cannot promise a particular non-profit nor does it reimburse any cost incurred during the project including gas and mileage for monthly meetings.
The Taproot Foundation offers non-profits the services of sales and marketers that they normally could not afford. The Taproot Foundation receives the benefit of your work, knowledge and experience, and you get to do something useful for your community, fill in gaps in your resume, and enable you to network with other professionals.

Several years ago, I was giving a presentation to a board of directors for a project that was near and dear to my heart and I wanted their blessing and support. As I was giving the report, one of the board members made a rather offhanded remark about the project that made the entire board laugh. I was humiliated! This was, I felt, an important project and a partnership that would be beneficial to the entire organization and they were laughing?! As I sank down into my chair, one of the board members told me, “Gena, you are such a bleeding heart. You wear your emotions on your sleeve. How do you expect to get anywhere if you are going to be so sensitive?”
He was right.
Although, sensitivity can be a gift that could help others because of your attunement to environment, energy and thought patterns and because it is quite normal (nearly 15-20% of the population is sensitive in some way), being overly sensitive can actually hurt your career if not managed correctly.
Here are a few tips to help you manage your sensitivity at work:
- Change how you view criticism – It is usually negative self-talk secretly that says, “I am not good enough.” Change that paradigm and view criticism as if you are doing something great that is worthy of attention.
- Check your mood – sometimes it really not about what your co-worker is saying, maybe there is something deeper going on that you need to look at.
- Act, don’t react – say this like a mantra. Try not to blow things out of proportion or over exaggerate. If you do there is a strong possibility that people will not take you seriously and will assume you’re over reacting and distorting the truth.
- Check your body language – Facial expressions and body posture says a lot. Remain relaxed and calm. Think: ‘this is not about me.’ Keep your tone even and friendly.
Remember, it is okay to be sensitive (I am totally a sensitive person). We are kind, empathetic, creative and we love to help others. However, knowing how to effectively manage your sensitivity when you are confronted with challenges will make you even more successful in your career and in life.

I have been in my position for a number of years and I’ve been trying to showcase my leadership abilities and take on additional challenges. My team has been challenged with short staffing. I have a lack of support and find myself working down and handling the responsibilities of my level and the level of beneath as the position has been vacant for about 6 months.
The position above me has been vacant for 6 months as well however instead of working up and working towards a promotion I find myself working down because it is needed and necessary in order for me to perform my level’s responsibilities. How do I reverse this issue?
I know this must be very hard for you. You say you are challenged by short staffing and you have a lack of support. However, you do have a team. No matter how big or small your team is the key is to empower them to do their part to support their department. The key for you is delegation. Make sure you delegate the lower level responsibilities to the employees you have, even if it is just one person. You have to empower your people and show them that you believe and trust in their abilities. If you can do that, I guarantee you that your bosses will notice your leadership abilities. How? You have just demonstrated to them the skills to delegate effectively and empower team members to effectively manage their productivity with little to no additional staff support.
Everyone tells me that people in HR scan resumes anywhere from 10-30 seconds. If this is true, should I use a yellow highlighter and highlight the bullet points on my resume. Wouldn’t this make it even easier for the people in HR to read the essential parts of my resume?
Focus on creating an excellent summary that clearly and succinctly describe your abilities and qualifications for the position for which you are seeking. Do not highlight the bullet points in your resume, but instead make sure the bullet points in your resume clearly connect with the qualifications that are in the job description.
