Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Nickelodeon has launched Nick Mobile on select Sprint multimedia phones. Nick Mobile offers a range of video clips from Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. shows, vignettes and music videos, all of which will be refreshed weekly. Nick Jr. content will include about two-minute long clips from shows including Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, The Backyardigans, LazyTown and the new series, The Wonder Pets! Nickelodeon content will include SpongeBob SquarePants, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, The X’s, Avatar and Catscratch, as well as TEENick content such as behind-the-scenes clips from Zoey 101, Unfabulous and Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.
CNET has announced plans to launch CNET TV, a new video-on-demand service that will offer a selection of its video content for distribution on TV and online through partnerships with Cox Communications Inc., TiVo Inc., and TVN Entertainment, as well as on CNET in the latter half of the year. CNET TV will offer its original video content including franchises such as Insider Secrets, Weekend Project, and First Look from the Labs, and will also feature special reports and coverage of events like the Consumer Electronics Show; user created videos, and regularly scheduled consumer news and trend programming. Additionally, interactive tools will let users to create shareable custom play lists, and click to buy products or read full reviews. The VOD partnerships follow a successful trial run with TiVo.
Nintendo releases Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day for Nintendo DS this week. The game is designed to keep the minds of players active with mental challenges using Nintendo DS specific features including voice-command and touch-screen abilities. While its for gamers of all ages, it’s also being targeted to older adults that may have never played video games before. Brain Age provides cognitive ability challenges including word memorization, counting and sudoko puzzles. The game is presented as an important component of an active lifestyle, which of course also includes a good regular mental workout. In Japan the game is being used with elderly people as a way to keep their brains challenged and active. Let’s hope they are right … lots of us are counting on it (www.brainage.com).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Paramount Pictures has shifted the release of the Nickelodeon Movies and O Entertainment CG animated movie Barnyard up a few months to July, 28, 2006. Written and directed by Steve Oedekerk (Jimmy Neutron), Barnyard is a comedy that looks at life when the farmer isn’t looking. The story revolves around Otis (voiced by Kevin James), a happy-go-lucky party cow that likes to pull one over on humans and isn’t concerned about keeping the farm animals human-like abilities under wraps. Other voices include Sam Elliott as Otis’ dad, and Danny GIover as the wild old mule.
Fox Soccer Channel will debut FC Fox, a new weekly series on Friday, April 21 at 7:30p. Targeted to P12-18, FC Fox will feature stories about both American youth and amateur soccer. The series will be hosted by Ethan Zohn, the winner of CBS’ Survivor: Africa who is also the co-founder of Grassroot Soccer, and will include include expert tips on game-play and techniques from Heather Mitts from the US Women’s National Team, and Christopher Sullivan, formerly of the US Men’s National Team.
Frederator has launched a new video podcast network titled ReFrederator, its fourth in six months. ReFrederator is a new daily cartoon video podcast featuring classic short-form cartoons from the public domain including Bugs Bunny, Mighty Mouse, and Felix the Cat, as well as fairy tales and musicals. New episodes will appear daily Monday-Friday, and will be grouped into weekly themes. The first week is a Mother Goose theme, beginning with Humpty Dumpty (1935), followed by Mighty Mouse in Wolf! Wolf! (1945), and Pigs in a Polka from director Friz Freling. The week will wrap up with Poor Cinderella, the only color Betty Boop cartoon, and Foney Fables, a series of short-form parodies of classic Disney stories.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Superstation WGN has acquired the exclusive TV syndication rights to the tween targeted series Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens from Buena Vista Television. WGN plans to air the shows back-to-back as part of its early fringe weekend line-up beginning fall 2006. The deal includes all three seasons of Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens, 65 episodes each. Superstation WGN, part of Tribune Broadcasting Company, is available in 68 million homes.
MTV has expanded Discover and Download, a show that features up and coming music acts, by launching it on MTV Overdrive as well as across its other platforms including MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com, and mtvU Uber and via wireless. Discover and Download current line-up includes free promotional downloads, exclusive live performances, interviews, videos, and photos et., of new artists Arctic Monkeys, Flyleaf, Cheyenne and Rick Ross. As of this week Amp’d Mobile begins featuring full Discover and Download Live performances from the Arctic Monkeys leading up to the TV and on-line premiere of a special Arctic Monkeys Discover and Download Live on Friday, April 21 at 11p on MTV2.
As part of a new three-year effort between Sesame Workshop and the World Heart Federation, Plaza Sesamo is producing new segments featuring Colombian kids and teens. The initiative is designed to provide educational and health messaging to kids and families, as well as offer a window into the cultural diversity of Latin American. The live segments are being produced locally with the help of Colombian teens, and will debut in October. Additionally photos taken by Columbian K5-9 will be used in new animated segments for the series, set to debut in Plaza Sesamo’s 11th season in April 2008. Plaza Sesamo airs on Senal Colombia and Discovery Kids.
Disney Channel will air eight new episodes of its preschool series Bear in the Big Blue House next week, April 24-28. The new episodes will focus on a range of subjects including tolerance, working together, what to do when you are afraid and sleeping away from home.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Major League Gaming, a professional video game league, has inked sponsorship and programming sponsorship deals with Boost Mobile and Scion to air its pro circuit on USA Network. MLG will host competitions in seven USA cities including Dallas, Atlanta, LA and Philadelphia, followed by playoffs to be held in Chicago this fall and the National Championships in Las Vegas in November, all of which will be featured in seven 60-minute episodes on USA. Under the deal Boost Mobile will serve as the title sponsor, which includes a partnership to distribute exclusive MLG content to Boost mobile phones. Scion will serve as a presenting sponsor for MLG 2006. Additionally, Boost and Scion have also signed as the presenting sponsors for the MLG Pro Invasion Bus Tour, which kicks-off in the summer and will make 100 stops across the country.
Ubisoft will release Open Season, a video game based on Sony Pictures Animations first feature-length CG animated movie of the same name, for all platforms in September 2006. Open Season the movie is slated to be released September 29, 2006.
Crave Entertainment, a publisher of console videogames, has inked a deal with Big Idea, Inc. to publish LarryBoy and the Bad Apple, the first videogame based on the VeggieTales property. Slated for release in late summer 2006, for PS2 and Game Boy Advance, the action-adventure game features LarryBoy the crime-fighting cucumber on a mission to save the day and the city of Bumblyburg. Big Idea, Inc., is a subsidiary of Classic Media LLC.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Bedi A. Singh has been appointed EVP/CFO, Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. Singh will report to CEO, Rich Battista. Singh was most recently Chief Finance and Administration Officer, Novartis Pharma A.G., and prior to that was CFO/Sony Pictures Entertainment. Singh takes over for Brian Urban, who stepped down as Gemstar’s CFO earlier this year.
Netflix, Inc. has made several additions to its LA-based content group.
- Bahman Naraghi joins Netflix as VP/Head of Original Content. He will lead the company’s foray into acquisition and distribution of original content, primarily focusing on indie produced movie and TV properties that will included in the Netflix catalog. Most recently Naraghi spent the last three years as COO of Intermedia Film.
- Sanford (Sandy) Friedman has been named VP/Product Operations. Friedman will focus his efforts on improving the quality of acquisition, receiving, shipping and handling of the company’s DVD inventory. He will work across Netflix’s supply chain on manufacturing and process improvements. Prior to this Friedman served was the head of Worldwide Operations, DreamWorks Home Entertainment.
- Additionally, James Maysonet has been named Director/Purchasing Operations for the company. Prior to this he was VP/Distribution Operations, MGM.
