Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, and we’re showing our green today in salute to Sundance Channel’s launch of The Green.
Extensive news coverage continues today as all the major broadcast and cable news outlets will be anchoring from or near the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Most of the networks’ top anchors were in place for the evening news and primetime and late night updates yesterday. Today, the morning news programs are all coming from Virginia, and likely the evening news as well; and this evening look for several news specials concentrating on the tragic events of yesterday. Check the listings and network websites for the latest updated information.
Tonight’s Premieres:
MTV: Living Lahaina at 1030p
229 Million Movie Fans Just Got Their Own Channel. ReelzChannel .
~ MORE STUFF ~
At its convention in Las Vegas yesterday, National Association of Broadcasters announced NBC Universal and its 10 O&O stations have rejoined the association after a seven-year hiatus. In addition, Jay Ireland, President of NBC Universal will become a member of NAB’s television board. NBC, along with the other large networks, originally left the NAB because of the divide over the national station ownership cap issue. ABC became a member of NAB two years ago, although CBS and FOX continue to sit out. Besides NBC and ABC, NAB has other network members including Ion and Univision. Even though NBC-owned Telemundo was not part of the announcement, NAB says there are discussions about the network joining as well.
Regis Philbin will return to his syndicated daytime talk show Live With Regis and Kelly on April 26. Regis, 75, has been away from the show for six weeks after having triple heart bypass surgery. He called in to the show yesterday and talked with his co-host, Kelly, saying he’d been “through the wars” during his recovery and was getting stronger through walking and lifting light weights. Regis also joked that his personality had changed since the operation and he would no longer be the “fun-loving Reege”.
TV Guide Network has entered into a multi-year distribution agreement with the production and distribution company Debmar/Mercury, where TV Guide Network has acquired the cable and satellite telecast rights to the Surreal TV group of reality programs. The series package includes all seven seasons of The Surreal Life; seasons one and two of My Fair Brady and Flavor of Love; and the various spin-off shows Strange Love, Fame Games (Surreal Life All-Stars), I Love New York and Flavor of Love Charm School (which is yet to premiere on VH1). These programs will be added to TV Guide Network’s late-night line-up starting this July and the network has secured the exclusive rights to air the shows through 2010.
ESPN‘s early morning news/talk show Cold Pizza is getting a bit of a makeover — it will move from NY to the network’s Bristol, Connecticut, headquarters, and it will get a new name – ESPN First Take. The hosts, Jay Crawford and Dana Jacobson are staying. Additionally, the show will be aired in hi-def, and feature SportsCenter updates. The changes all take place on May 7.
Tennis Channel has a new multi-year distribution contract with DIRECTV, Inc. that will begin with a Sneak Peek of the French Open coverage May 27-June 10 available to 16 million DIRECTV customers. The French Open coverage will also include French Open Interactive, with additional footage and features. Tennis Channel will launch on the satellite provider later this summer on a base package to around 8 million customers. Then in December 2007, Tennis Channel will launch a second high-definition network and DIRECTV will make it available to its customers in HD.
Program Partners signed a deal to premiere new episodes of procedural Da Vinci’s Inquest on YouTube before they air in syndication. The first two episodes from season 8, cut into several 4-minute segments, are now available. Nicholas Campbell, who plays coroner Dominic Da Vinci, even filmed a little promo for the channel.
Scifi.com created a comprehensive forum for Stargate SG-1 as the channel gears up to air the show’s final ten episodes this spring. Fans can submit video tributes and participate in polls, quizzes and ten-best lists to show off their knowledge of the show, the longest-running sci-fi drama on American television.
Sci Fi Network is also launching a new mobile WAP site to promote the premier of Painkiller Jane. The site will feature a multi-strip animated digital comic book developed by Painkiller Jane creator Jimmy Palmiotti, available on scifi.com after its debut on mobile.scifi.com.
