And on a side note … some observations about the MIPTV Market … Each year I come to this market and there are some things that never change.  The Japanese booth with a bowl of large marshmallows for people to nosh on (and they do); the stands with beautiful preschool animation just steps down the aisle from the adult (sometimes VERY adult) offerings, the huge number of people taking meetings in hotel lobbies and all searching for someone they’ve never met before, and the endless pitches about how this show more than any other can work on multiple platforms and has just what today’s savvy viewers want – multiplatform.  What has changed this year is that last observation.  Yes, the product is often packaged with a multitude of multiplatform multiples, that hasn’t changed.  But it’s no longer the primary focus.  This year at this market, I’ve heard over and over in the dozen plus meetings I had yesterday, “let me just tell you the story.”  And while the stories ranged from vampires to white slavery, conspiracy theories to magical animated balloon rides with live action animals, sports clip shows to the Dog Whisperer, Thomas the Tank Engine to Mike the Knight, bridal shows in Asia to crafty squirrels outwitting bank robbers, Atomic Betty five years ahead to the best doggone summer camp ever, and even the group at Boston’s M.I.T. spending their valuable research time exploring the best way to tell stories today … the one thing all of these meetings had in common was the foremost desire to simply tell a story. While this feels quite basic to what we do, over the years we’ve become more involved with the delivery mechanisms of those stories rather than the story itself.  From what I’ve seen so far at MIPTV 2010, as an industry we have managed to find our way thru another cycle … and returned to the idea that if the story is good, the audience will find it … in all of its various delivery forms.
