~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Steve Carrell departs NBC’s The Office with an extra 50 minutes.  NBC “supersized” the April 28 episode featuring Carrell for the last time and the special ep will air from 9p to 950p.  Not to be outdone, Parks and Recreation will also have an extended episode on April 28 from 950p to 1030p followed by a normal sized ep of 30 Rock at 1030p.

On April 20, Univision premieres a new primetime novela, Cuando Me Enamoro (Timeless Love) beginning at 7p. The plot of Cuando Me Enamoro centers on a young man who ends up hating the woman his heart tells him to love.  The novela stars Silvia Navarro, Juan Soler, Rocio Banquells, Julieta Rosen, Jessica Coch, Jose Ron, Rene Casados, Guillermo Capetillo and Lisardo.

 Summer lineup of new and returning series on USA Network:

  • June 7 serves up the season three opener of White Collar at 9p followed by a second season of Covert Affairs at 10p.
  • Later on June 23, the fifth season of Burn Notice debuts at 9p with new series, Suits (formerly titled A Legal Mind) premiering at 10p.
  • Royal Pains is back for a third season beginning June 29 at 9p with new series Necessary Roughness launching at 10p. 

This Saturday, Discovery Channel premieres new series Filthy Cities going back in time and revealing the dirty side of major cities led by host Don Wildman.  By using the latest in CGI technology, the opening episode of Filthy Cities at 8p takes a look at medieval London and the episode following at 9p will shed light on what 19th century New York looked like.  Filthy Cities is produced for Discovery by BBC.

Bravo’s upcoming music competition series, Platinum Hit bows May 30 at 10p with host Jewel and head judge Kara DioGuardi.  The series follows 12 aspiring musicians as they endure a series of songwriting challenges in pursuit of a $100,000 cash prize, a publishing deal with Sony, BMI Songwriters The Writing Camp and a recording agreement with RCA/Jive. Keith Naftaly, SVP of A&R for RCA/Jive Label Group at Sony Music Entertainment will be a featured judge throughout the competition series and other guest judges will include Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Donna Summer, Jermaine Dupri, Taio Cruz and Ryan Tedder.  True Entertainment produces Platinum Hit for Bravo.

A seventh season of Taboo opens on National Geographic Channel May 2 with stacked episodes beginning at 9p.  Following its premiere, the one-hour series will move to its regular time slot of Mondays at 10p.  Taboo is produced by Beyond Entertainment Limited.

Commercial-free channel, Create TV adds a music-centered travel series, Music Voyager starting May 23 (check local listings).  Music Voyager tags along with host Jacob Edgar, an ethnomusicologist, cultural musician and music critic as he travels the world in search of the best world music.  The series, presented by American Public Television, airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Create TV.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic continue to allow cameras to be part of their personal lives as a fourth season of Giuliana & Bill was announced by The Style Network.  Season three which ended on December 20, 2010, was the most-watched with 357,000 total viewers.  The new fourth season will launch in July.

TLC granted a ninth season renewal for What Not To Wear helmed by fashion gurus Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.  TLC premieres the ninth season this August with 26 new episodes.  BBC Worldwide Productions produces the series for TLC. 

Royal Wedding Watch on ABC News:

  • ABC News with anchors Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters offers a special live presentation from Buckingham Palace on April 29 beginning at 4a to 10a followed by a live West Coast edition of Good Morning America.  GMA’s co-anchor Robin Roberts will generate live reports from Westminster Abbey.
  • The ABC trio of Sawyer, Walters and Roberts will be joined in London by a team from ABC News including ABC World News weekend anchor David Muir, as he funnels real-time reactions to the wedding via Twitter and Facebook; 20/20 anchor Chris Cuomo; Nightline co-anchor Cynthia McFadden; GMA Weekend co-anchor Bianna Golodryga; ABC News’ London-based correspondent Nick Watt; and ABC News Special Royal Correspondent Katie Nicholl.
  • ABC News begins its Royal Wedding coverage with a Special Edition of 20/20: William & Catherine: A Modern Fairytale anchored by Barbara Walters on April 18.  Furthermore, on the eve of the wedding, 20/20 at 8p will offer a behind-the-scenes look at Catherine’s new life as a princess anchored by Chris Cuomo in London and Elizabeth Vargas in New York.  After the wedding, Walters will host another special two-hour 20/20 on April 29 at 9p.
  • Good Morning America’s live coverage from different London locations commences throughout the week of April 25 helmed by Robin Roberts while Diane Sawyer anchors ABC World News live from London starting April 27 through April 29.

BBC America reminds US viewers the BBC has covered Royal Weddings since George VI’s marriage to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 and on April 29, the network will serve up five and a half hours of live commercial-free coverage of William and Catherine’s nuptials beginning at 3a.  BBC America’s coverage is a simulcast with BBC One led by BBC news anchor Huw Edwards.  BBC America will chronicle the Royal Wedding events as the Royal Family arrives at Westminster Abbey, the first look at Catherine’s wedding dress, the actual wedding ceremony starting at 6a, views of the newly-married couple on their journey to Buckingham Palace to the moment when Prince William and Princess Catherine greet the London crowds on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.  In addition, BBC America will offer live reports from St. Andrew’s University in Scotland where William and Catherine first met, Catherine’s home village of Bucklebury and from various UK military bases as well as exclusive live reporting on board the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as it flies over London in honor of the newlyweds.

CBS Sports’ delivered an average HH rating/share of 10.4/22 for Sunday’s Masters coverage.  This rating/share marks the second-highest for the final round of the Masters in metered markets in 10 years, following the 2010 results of 12.0/25. 

E!’s series premiere of Khloe & Lamar on Sunday at 10p tallied 2.6 million total viewers and delivered a 3.52 rating with W18-34.  Following at 1030p, a second new series, The Dance Scene attracted half as many total viewers at 1.3 million. 

Last Friday’s third season finale of Merlin on Syfy brought in 1.87 million total viewers as well as 788,000 A25-54 and 621,000 with A18-49.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

DIRECTV is making HBO’s new online video destinations, HBO GO and MAX GO available as of today.  The service allows customers to watch all episodes of any season of HBO’s programs as well as hundred of movie titles and more from Cinemax at any US locale via a broadband-connected computer.  HBO GO and HBO MAX are free with unlimited access to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the premium channels.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Hearst Corp. acquired a major ownership stake in Mark Burnett’s production company, forming a 50/50 media, production and events joint venture.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. 

TV Land is developing a spinoff to Hot in Cleveland starring Cedric the Entertainer, reports Variety.  Later this month, Cedric will guest star on Hot in Cleveland playing a minister. Following this appearance, Suzanne Martin, the show’s creator and executive producer will work with Cedric on a pilot script for a spinoff featuring the minister character.  If TV Land top executives Larry Jones and Keith Cox approve the script the show will likely be ordered to series without filming the pilot.

The Style Network heads to the Big Apple with a new version of its makeover series Clean House New York.  The one-hour series sporting a new host and clean-up crew will look for the messiest homes in New York and viewers will watch as the Clean House New York team performs miracles for homeowners who have battled disorganization.  The 10-episode series begins production in New York next month and the new episodes premiere in October.

Casting Call: GMC is hosting a national casting call for its new original series America Sings hosted by Drew Lachey.  America Sings launches as a weekly series this June.  The show is seeking singing groups of any age who are willing to showcase their talents on national television with the chance to win $10,000.  Singing groups could be church choirs, school music ensembles, barbershop, choral, doo wop and more. Friday A18-49 Analysis:  UNIV was the overall top network Friday night with a 1.7/5 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision’s Eva Luna won at 8p with a 1.9/6 and NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? placed second at 1.3/4.  Univision bested the rest again during 9p with Teresa at 1.8/6 and CBS followed with CSI: NY at 1.7/5.  CBS and Univision switched places at 10p with CBS’ Blue Bloods posting a 1.6/5 with Univision’s Triunfo del Amor in a close #2 slot at 1.5/5.

Former GM/Editor-in-Chief of AOL’s PopEaster, Jason Kaufman added to MTV News in the newly-minted role as VP/Daily News.  Jason starts his new job May 2 where he will work in tandem with Ryan Kroft, VP/Specials, Series and Special Projects and reporting to Benjamin Wagner, SVP/MTV News.

D’Arcy Kelner joins Media Networks, Inc. as Account Manager where she will manage a team charged with increasing existing business in the Southeast region.  Based in Atlanta, D’Arcy will report to Patti Pruett Trow, Southeast Director.

Blue Ant Media Inc. is acquiring a controlling interest in GlassBOX Television Inc. As a result of this transaction, GlassBOX Television’s executive management team will be restructured with Michael MacMillan taking on the new position of Executive Chairman participating in GlassBOX Television’s strategic growth for its digital and broadcast assets.  In addition, Raja Khanna is named CEO and Jeffrey Elliott will be appointed to the new role as President/Chief Strategy Officer. Furthermore, Jay Switzer, the present Chair of GlassBOX Television’s Board of Directors will leave his role.

The Topps Company added Doug Kruep as VP/GM, US Sports and Entertainment, effective immediately.  Doug will have responsibility for supervising domestic sports and entertainment products as well as brand management, product development, editorial, operations, finance, sales and customer development activities.  Doug will report to Ryan O’Hara, CEO/President.

Mark Mitchell becomes Chief Revenue Officer with Screenvision.  Previously, Mark held senior management positions with Canoe Ventures and Premiere Retail Networks (PRN).  In his new role with Screenvision, Mark will head all revenue emanating from national, regional and local advertising of the company’s cinema advertising efforts. 

BBC Worldwide America tapped Valerie Bruce as SVP/Business Affairs for BBC America.  Valerie’s scope of duties will include negotiating all programming-related business deals for BBC America while reporting to Perry Simon, GM/Channels, BBC Worldwide America.

John Montgomery, COO with GroupM Interaction appointed as Chairman of the recently-established Privacy Committee with the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s).  The committee is charged with addressing the topic of online privacy.

Denise Conroy-Galley elevated to EVP/Marketing and Research at Outdoor Channel.  Denise has been with Outdoor Channel since 2004 and has been involved in heading all marketing and research functions for the network encompassing branding, consumer marketing, ad sales marketing, on-air promotions, creative services, public relations, strategic partnerships and research.

NATPE||Content First boosted Wayneston Harbeson to VP/Operations up from Director/Operations, a position he has held since 2008.  Wayneston manages the logistical elements of NATPE and in his new role he will additionally oversee other NATPE events such as PitchCon.

Annual New York Television Festival (NYTVF) upped Erin Day and Michael Getto as Co-Festival Directors. Erin continues to be involved with the festival’s partnerships and overseeing sponsorships while Michael manages operations, digital and creative brand strategy.
