Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

MGM and actress/producer/director Salma Hayek have inked a partnership that includes the creation of the new production banner, Ventanazul.  The new label will develop, produce and acquire mainstream movies that draw on Latin themes and/or talent, in front or behind the camera, across a range of genres including youth and family movies.  Ventanazul’s goal is to release two to four movies a year, with MGM handling the worldwide marketing and distribution.  Hayek will serve as President and CEO of Ventanazul, and her partner Jose Tamez as President/Production.  Based at MGM, Ventanazul’s productions will be financed by MGM as well as outside structured financing.


TV5 Monde USA, the 24/7 French-language cable channel, is expanding its kid’s programming with a new afternoon programming block beginning this week.  Comprised of both animated and live-action series the new block initially features these new shows:

  • Potlach la ferme (The Farm Potlach) (26×26′)  An animated show about 15 animated animals that take on human characteristics when they are left alone on a farm. The series is targeted to K 3-6.
  • L’Ane Trotro (Trotro the Donkey) (78x3mins)  the adventures of Trotro the Donkey includes humor and the dig your heels in kid stubborn factor.  Aimed at K3-6
  • Papryus (52×26′)  targeted to K6-12, the series follows the adventures of boy living in ancient Egypt who becomes the protector and confidant of a Princess after saving her.
  • Coeur Ocean (Heart Ocean) (26×26′)  the show revolves around three friends who meet on the same island every year for their summer vacations.  But this year the friends meet someone special that makes the summer unique.  Coeur Ocean is designed for young adult viewers.

LAT TV has acquired the rights to air a collection of family movies and kid’s TV series under a newly finalized programming content deal between CCI Entertainment and US Hispanic broadcaster Latin America Broadcasting Inc.  The agreement includes the rights to four family movies; Fast Food High, Virtual Mom, What Katy Did and I Was A Rat, three kid’s series: Monster By Mistake, Nilus The Sandman and Raccoons and three lifestyle series: Avventura, Entrada and Mystic Lands.  LAT TV kid’s programming block airs daily 3:30-6:30p.

Portfolio Entertainment has acquired TV distribution, home video, non-theatrical, and multimedia rights for five of Radical Sheep Productions‘ preschool programs in all languages.  The Big Comfy Couch (100×30’/ mix live-action and puppets), Amigo and Me (65×5’/ mix live-action and CGI), Ruffus the Dog (26×15’/puppets), Panda Bear Daycare (26×15’/puppets), and Land O’ Hands (50×4’/puppets) are all bundled up in the agreement.  The deal excludes the rights to The Big Comfy Couch in the US and South Korea and for English-language distribution in Canada for all five shows.

NCircle Entertainment has completed a multi-year distribution deal with Belgium-based Bert Smets Productions for the 3D CGI animated series Hopla (104×5′).  According to the terms of the deal NCircle will hold the exclusive broadcast, merchandising and home entertainment distribution rights to the preschool series across the US and Canada.  Plans include 26 new episodes per year 2007 through 2010.  Created by Belgian illustrator Bert Smets in 1999, Hopla is a series of 5-minute episodes about a group of animal friends including a curious Rabbit named Hopla.

Taffy Entertainment has picked up the worldwide rights to Howie Mandel’s animated kids series Bobby’s World (81×23′).  Under the deal, Taffy plans to distribute the series worldwide, beginning at MIPTV later this month.  Additionally, Taffy will develop and implement a licensing and consumer products campaign for the property.  Bobby’s World originally premiered on Fox in September 1990, and was produced by Film Roman Productions and Fox Television, in association with Alevy Productions.  Bobby’s World joined Kabillion, Taffy’s kid-targeted multi-platform service including a VOD channel and a broadband website, which launched in January 2007.


PBS Kids Sprout furthers its efforts to encourage ongoing interaction between parents and their preschoolers with the launch of the new “We Sharebranding campaign, from April 23, 2007.  A multi-phase campaign, We Share was developed by Red Tettemer, Sprout’s agency of record, and is comprised of a series of print ads and national TV spots aimed at both trade and consumer audiences nationwide.  The spots feature preschoolers sharing time with parents/caregivers in conjunction with Sprout programming.  The TV ads will run across targeted cable networks and PBS affiliate stations, as well as on Sprout’s linear channel, Sprout On Demand and SproutOnline.com.

Classic Media and Genius Products will release The Ultimate Underdog DVD Collection Volumes 1-3 from July 24, 2007, which coincides with Disney’s release of its Underdog mixed animation/live-action feature film on August 3, 2007.  All Underdog DVD volumes feature digitally re-mastered episodes of the animated TV series (1960s and 70s).  Additionally, the Underdog episodes appear as they originally aired on TV, which means they include the short animated segments including Hunter, Go Go Gophers, Klondike Kat, Tennessee Tuxedo, King and Odie, Tootie Turtle and Commander McBragg.

Curious Pictures, a NY-based animation production studio, and Gamelab, developer/publisher of videogames, have released Out of Your Mind, their first joint casual game title.  Set in a virtual ‘brain spa,’ Out of Your Mind challenges players to exercise and beef-up their mental hygiene.  The game can be downloaded ($19.95) at www.playoutofyourmind.com, and various gaming websites.  Out of Your Mind is initially available for PCs.

Footwear company stride rite has signed on as a co-sponsor for the premiere of the SpongeBob SquarePants Friend or Foe episode, bowing on Nickelodeon this Friday, April 13, at 8p. As co-sponsor stride rite is utilizing Nickelodeon as the exclusive marketing platform for an ad campaign for its SuperBall footwear line.  The footwear campaign will be featured across Nickelodeon TV, online and the April issue of Nickelodeon magazine.

THQ Inc. plans to release Cars Mater-National, a new video game based on the Disney-Pixar movie Cars this fall 2007.  In addition to characters from the movie, the Cars racing game will include new race competitors and new tracks, as well as a series of mini-games and 10+ multiplayer games.  Developed by THQ’s Rainbow Studios, Cars Mater-National will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and 2, Wii, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.


Launched in November 2001, Apple reports that it has sold its 100 millionth iPod.  So far there have been five generations of iPod (10 different models), and two generations each of the iPod mini, nano and shuffle and 4,000+ various accessories specifically for iPods.  No word on who actually purchased the 100 millionth unit.


Barbara Marcus has been appointed to B*tween Productions Board of Directors.  Most recently, Marcus was President, Scholastic Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution and EVP, Scholastic, Inc.


The Sorpresa! Network, the network aimed at Hispanic kids, has surpassed 713,000 subscribers as of December 31, 2006, an increase of +45% over the same time in 2005.  Juniper Content Corporation, Sorpresa’s parent company, credits its growing base of cable affiliates.  As we reported recently, Sorpresa! will add some 50,000 additional subscribers when it launches on Puerto Rico’s  OneLink Communications’ system later this month.
