President Obama’s address to Congress airing live on most broadcast and cable news networks at 7p.
Programming note: President Obama’s scheduled speech airing live tonight will move NBC’s NFL pre-game show, NFL Kickoff 2011 to NBCUniversal cable channels VERSUS, USA Network, Syfy and G4 in addition to the NFL Network. The NFL Kickoff 2011 will now run for 90 minutes beginning at 7p. NBC will resume the pre-show in progress after its live coverage of the President’s speech. The four NBCU cable channels will resume regular programming soon after NBC picks up the show while the NFL Network will carry the pre-show in its entirety. The NFL opening game between the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers starting at 830p is expected to begin on time on NBC.
Discovery Channel’s first-ever live interactive series Penn & Teller Tell A Lie premieres October 5 at 10p. The six-part series allows exclusive co-viewing opportunities in each episode, as viewers will be prompted by Penn & Teller to launch the Guess the Lie app available on iPad, iPhone and online at Discovery.com. Additionally, viewers will select in real time if Penn & Teller’s over-the-top stories are “true” or a “lie” and can change their vote as many times as they like until the final reveal. Penn & Teller Tell A Lie is produced by Discovery Studios in association with 1/17 Productions and Creative Differences.
Summer series Alphas received a second season renewal from Syfy. The network ordered 13 new episodes of the scripted series from Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television to debut in 2012. Alphas premiered July 11 and the opening episode became Syfy’s most-watched original scripted series debut in two years. Alphas airs on Monday nights at 10p and to date the weekly episodes have averaged 3.3 million total viewers, based on all available Live + 7 DVR data.
Showtime set the second season premiere date of Gigolos on October 20 at 11p. The unscripted series, with eight new episodes, takes an uncensored look inside the lives of high-end male escorts Nick, Vin, Steven, Jimmy and Brace as they juggle relationships, friendships and family as well as the demands of their female clients. Prior to the new season debut, Showtime will air the complete first season starting September 8 at 11p with the first two episodes back-to-back with weekly episodes and ending with the last two eps on October 13 at 11p.
A new season of VH1 Tough Love Miami with Master Matchmaker Steve Ward and his mother JoAnn opens October 2 at 8p on VH1. The new season, with eleven one-hour episodes, has the son/mother duo working with eight relationship-challenged women in Miami to help them finally land Mr. Rights. Furthermore, Steve and JoAnn Ward will star in a one-hour docu-special for VH1 called Tough Love: The Wards Get Real airing October 9 at 9p. The series and the special are executive produced by Jim Berger and Pamela Healey for High Noon Entertainment as well as Nancy Juvonen, Drew Barrymore, Ember Truesdell and Chris Miller for Flower Films. Steve and JoAnn Ward are also executive producers for the series.
The sophomore season of scripted series Workaholics premieres September 20 at 1030p on Comedy Central following the fall season debut of Tosh.0 at 10p. The stars of Workaholics, Adam Devine, Blake Anderson and Anders Holm will also host the red carpet pre-show of the network’s Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen on September 19 at 930p on comedycentral.com and on Comedy Central at 945p. The actual Roast of Charlie Sheen airs at 10p on September 19.
Former The Bachelor star Bob Guiney is hosting HGTV’s new series Showhouse Showdown debuting next Monday at 10p. In each episode, local interior designers from across the country will battle to complete ten room makeovers inside two, newly-built identical model homes. Potential buyers will vote for the designer who they think did the best.
In primetime next month, Food Network offers up a new four-episode competition series surrounding Halloween as Halloween Wars bows October 2 at 9p. The series watches as five teams made up of cake decorators, candy makers and pumpkin carvers working together to create Halloween-themed displays. One team is eliminated each week with the final team winning $50,000. Justin Willman (Cupcake Wars) will host the series and cake decorator Shinmin Li and Hollywood conceptual artist Miles Teves will judge the teams along with one rotating celebrity guest judge each week.
National Geographic Channel pushed back the premiere date of its new series Mad Scientists to October 5 at 10p. The previous debut date was September 28.
Tuesday’s season four premiere of Sons of Anarchy on FX chalked up the most-watched episode in the series’ history based on Live+Same Day ratings data. The 90-minute episode at 10p tallied 4.94 million total viewers and 3.22 million with A18-49, a +20% and a +15% gain respectively compared to the third season premiere. Adding in the two encore airings at 1130p and 1a to the premiere episode, Sons of Anarchy delivered 7.25 million total viewers and 4.76 million A18-49 viewers for the night.
Yesterday, Nielsen said the Media Rating Council (MRC) voted to give accreditation to Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings, a new measurement system that will provide overnight audience reach, frequency and gross rating points (GRPs) for online display and video advertising. Nielsen’s online measurement system is the first accredited by the MRC that will offer demographic ratings for online ad campaigns.

Adding to its lineup, ION Television acquired the off-network rights to all seasons of TNT’s drama series Leverage from Electric Entertainment. Leverage will begin airing on ION Television during the summer of 2012.
NBC approved a single-camera comedy script titled My Best Friend Is A Lesbo from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and their production company Fake Empire through Warner Bros. Television, cites Variety. The half-hour comedy centers on two female best friends, one gay and one straight. Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes are on board as writers and co-executive producers. Schwartz and Savage are behind NBC’s Chuck and the upcoming Hart of Dixie premiering this fall on The CW.
Lifetime’s upcoming new competition series Project Accessory will be hosted by actress/model Molly Sims and lifestyle expert Eva Lorenzotti will serve as the contestant’s mentor. Twelve aspiring artists will be charged with creating the newest and hottest trends in accessories competing for attention from Sims and judges designer Kenneth Cole and InStyle Editor, Ariel Foxman. Lifetime has ordered eight one-hour episodes slated to premiere yet this year following Project Runway All Stars. Project Accessory is produced by The Weinstein Company and Goodbye Pictures.
ER alum Eriq La Salle joins another hospital drama this fall playing a neuropsychiatrist on CBS’ new medical/medium drama A Gifted Man. La Salle landed a multi-episode run when the series debuts on CBS September 23 at 8p.
Two signed development deals with Twentieth Century Fox Television:
- British actor Tim Roth (Lie To Me) made a combo talent/development deal with the studio to star in another series or a project he could produce and not star in. Twentieth also has a first-look option on projects developed by Roth.
- Creator/executive producer of Men of a Certain Age, Mike Royce forged a multi-year development agreement with the studio to develop new projects for Twentieth in addition to contributing to existing Twentieth shows.
Carol Mendelsohn, showrunner on CSI, had a pilot titled Scent of the Missing picked up by TNT. The drama is based on the book of the same name by Susannah Charleson and the plot is about a search-and-rescue officer who braves harsh conditions with help from her best friend and partner, a Labrador retriever. CBS Television Studios is producing with Melissa Byers and Treena Hancock as writers and executive producers. Barry Josephson and Julie Weitz will also serve as executive producers; Diane Nabatoff and Shelly Glasser are co-executive producers.
TNT further has okayed a script from Mick Davis and is also in development on Davis’ action/adventure drama Wasteland, reports Variety. Wasteland is from FremantleMedia North America and Landscape Entertainment and is set in the American Southwest following a US Marshal who hunts down supernatural escapees on the run following a federal prison break. Davis will serve as executive producer on Wasteland along with Robert C. Cooper and J.J. Jamieson. Jordan Helman will also serve as co-executive producer.
BBC’s Washington correspondent Katty Kay will become Lead Anchor of BBC World News America, the nightly newscast airing on the BBC World News cable channel and via US PBS stations. Kay is replacing Matt Frei who was the former lead anchor before he departed for UK’s Channel 4 last May.
GSN (Game Show Network) made a two-year developing and producing agreement with Kelly Goode who has been SVP/Programming with the network since 2008.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: ABC scored the highest ratings Saturday at 2.7/10 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s season opener of Saturday Night Football debuted at 8p with a 2.2/9 with FOX’s Cops rerun episodes averaging a 0.8/3 in second place. ABC’s college football spiked at 9p with a 3.1/11 followed by Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3. ABC finished off the night at 10p with more of the Oregon vs. LSU game in first place at 2.9/10 and CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat was next at 1.0/3.

CBS took over at 8p with Big Brother at 2.4/8 with Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes next at 1.8/6. Monday A18-49 Analysis: Univision capped off the holiday weekend a winner Monday at 2.6/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Starting out, Univision won the 8p hour with Pequenos Gigantes at 2.4/7 and ABC’s Bachelor Pad was next at 1.9/5. At 9p, FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes shared #1 at 2.7/7 each and the last hour of ABC’s Bachelor Pad remained in second place at 1.8/5. During 10p, Univision with the third hour of Pequenos Gigantes was #1 at 2.6/7 and a tie for #2 occurred between CBS’ Hawaii Five-O rerun and NBC’s special Children of 9/11 at 1.1/3 each.

As a result of new business growth, MKTG INC, an integrated agency specializing in experiential marketing elevated Paul Trager to CFO up from SVP/Financial Planning and Analysis.
Sundance Channel tapped Suzy Berkowitz Weksel as SVP/Public Relations. In her new role, Suzy will be the primary consumer press strategist for the network working in tandem with Sundance Channel EVP/GM Sarah Barnett and the network’s management team. Suzy will spearhead all consumer communications encompassing program publicity, talent relations, award campaigns and special events. Suzy will report to Ellen Kroner, EVP/Communications, AMC Networks.
Effective immediately, GroupM added John Kristick as Global CEO of GroupM Entertainment & Sports Partnerships (ESP), the company’s entertainment and sports consultancy division. Based in New York, John will report to Irwin Gotlieb, GroupM Global CEO.
JUMA Entertainment welcomes Peter J. DeVita in the newly-minted role as COO. Peter will inaugurate and lead the company’s New York offices next month and also begins his new position where he will report to Robert Horowitz, President/Founder. Peter previously worked for IMG Worldwide, Inc. for 14 years. Furthermore, JUMA Entertainment hired Michael Hazan as West Coast Head/Development based in Los Angeles.
