Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Grand-Am and American Le Mans are merging into one series with both sanctioning bodies operating separate schedules for one more season in 2013 before combining events in 2014 starting with the 52nd annual Rolex 24 At Daytona. A board of directors has been formed to operate the new combined organization with GRAND-AM founder Jim France serving as chairman and ALMS founder Don Panoz named vice chairman. Other members include: NASCAR Vice Chair/Executive Vice President Lesa France Kennedy, GRAND-AM President/CEO Ed Bennett, ALMS President/CEO Scott Atherton and NASCAR Vice President/Deputy General Counsel Karen Leetzow. The combined entity will involve a total of eight sports car series racing throughout North America.
On the Air
Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb landed a new gig, serving as a studio analyst for NFL Network. McNabb will be seen on the network series Playbook, which airs Friday at 8p with the NFC edition and 9p for the AFC edition. The ex-Eagle joins analysts Sharpe and Brian Baldinger on the series.
Just in time for the new season, the NFL locked in deals for games to be offered in the UK, including a three year agreement with BSkyB’s Sky Sports network. As part of the deal, Sky will carry over 60 live games each season including the International Series, post-season and Super Bowl with coverage across TV, mobile, online and tablet devices. Meanwhile, the BBC picked up rights to Monday Night Football this season, with games offered on the BBC Red Button and BBC Sport website.
The NFL and Nicktoons are teaming up to groom a new generation of football fans. The LA Times reports that the league locked in a deal to create Rush Zone: Season Of The Guardians, a new animated series made up of two dozen 30-minute episode of the show. The series will debut on Nicktoons on Nov. 30 and feature boys who are picked to keep an evil force from destroying the NFL.
NBC Sports Network is making last weekend’s Orioles/Yankees series the subject of its Caught Looking series, which features a behind-the-scenes look at post-season contenders. The episode runs tonight at 9p and a preview clip can be found here.
ESPN announced that this season’s Big East men’s college basketball regular-season schedule will showcase 129 conference games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU as well as ESPN3 simulcasts. Programming is set to include the return of ESPN Big Monday featuring a conference doubleheader with the Big 12 at 7p and 9p respectively. The eight-week series launches Jan. 14 with Louisville/Connecticut at 7p. Overall, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to offer a minimum of five Big East games a week with telecasts every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday as well as most Tuesdays and select Thursdays and Sundays.
ESPN2 series Numbers Never Lie is getting an overhaul with the additions of Jalen Rose and Hugh Douglas, while Michael Smith will serve as host. The new-look show will begin its run on Monday.
Cal Ripken is hitting the broadcast booth where he will serve as a game analyst for the first time in his career. Ripken joins Ernie Johnson and John Smoltz on Sunday MLB on TBS on Sept. 9 at 1:30p where the trio will call a match-up of AL postseason contenders Yankees/Orioles.
Fans tuned in for ABC’s Saturday Night Football matchup pitting Michigan/Alabama. Although the game wasn’t close, it delivered a 4.8 rating for the network with 7,918,000 viewers and 5,452,000 households, according to Nielsen. Meanwhile ESPN’s Friday night Boise State at Michigan State matchup scored as the network’s third highest-rated and most-viewed Friday night telecast, averaging a 3.2 rating, with 4,194,000 viewers.
The Dallas Cowboys are the first North American sports franchise to be worth at least $2 billion, according to an annual survey by Forbes. The rankings valued the franchise at $2.1 billion, besting other top contenders including the Patriots ($1.62 billion), the Redskins ($1.6 billion) the Giants ($1.46 billion) and the Texans ($1.3 billion). English Premier League soccer club Manchester United ranked as the world’s most valuable sports team, according to the report, with the club estimated to be worth $2.23 billion.
Nine-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins is joining ESPN as a NFL analyst. Dawkins will appear on studio programs throughout the year including SportsCenter, NFL Live, Audibles and NFL32 and will debut on Audibles on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7p.
Outdoor Channel revealed that country music star Craig Morgan will host the upcoming season of Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge. The challenge will expand to 13 half-hour episodes for its next go-around and debut on Oct. 3 at 9:30p.
SNY locked in plans for the channel’s coverage of the Jets season this year, announcing that Jets Post Game Live show will make its 2012 season debut immediately following the Jets/Bills game on Sunday. On-air talent will include former Jets stars Joe Klecko, Kris Jenkins, Ray Lucas as well as NFL Insider Adam Schein, Jets reporter Jeané Coakley and host Brian Custer.
Sponsorship & Promotion
The Hershey Company extended its NCAA Corporate Partner agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Sports. The candy company also inked a new sponsorship deal with IMG College with both deals running through 2016. As part of the NCAA renewal with Turner Sports and CBS Sports, The Hershey Company boasts access to marketing rights across all 89 NCAA championships, including continued title sponsorship for its Reese’s College All-Star Game on CBS as well as title sponsorship of Reese’s Final Four Friday. Hershey serves as the Official Candy Partner of the NCAA and will continue to designate its Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups brand as the NCAA’s Official Candy. The Company’s new partner agreement with IMG College offers the Reese’s brand collective and individual rights at 49 universities for all intercollegiate athletics, as well as designation as the “Official Candy” at each of the respective athletic programs.
ESPN and StubHub revealed the inaugural class of the Hall of Fans, which celebrates diehard fandom. Vancouver Canucks fan and legendary Green Man “Sully,” Baltimore Ravens icon “Captain Dee-Fense” and the University of Alabama softball team’s beloved Emily will become the first inductees with nearly 50,000 votes were cast in the first year of this contest.
FOX Sports is teaming with the Children’s Organ Transplant Association this NFL season. COTA is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding volunteers, COTA’s Miracle Makers, in raising funds for families whose children are facing transplants. To raise awareness, NFL on FOX on-air personalities Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Buck, Jay Glazer, Jimmy Johnson, Howie Long, Curt Menefee, Pam Oliver and Michael Strahan shot PSA’s in LA with four transplant kids and their families.

ESPN launched the ESPN Fantasy Football app for iPad, which allows fans to pull up their fantasy team, preview their team and match-up each week as well as make last minute roster adjustments. During the games, users will be able to follow their players’ scoring through Fantasycast in real-time, without a single refresh as well as interact with their league and friends via social platforms.
Also on the fantasy front, Bloomberg Sports is launching a pair of newly enhanced suite of football applications. Fantasy football app Decision Maker 2012 uses Bloomberg’s analytic tools to offer fantasy football players advice on their best starting lineup each week. Bloomberg Sports is also introducing Crowd Call, a free fan-voting companion tool allowing fans to test their own predictive capabilities against the Bloomberg Sports technology-driven selections.
Congrats to Golf Digest Writer-at-Large Dan Jenkins who was named the winner of the PEN Literary Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing. The veteran golf writer and author will be honored at the PEN Literary Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 in New York.
