Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/06/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The Media Behavior Institute has released the latest data from its USA TouchPoints cross-platform measurement service, which aims to provide insights on how consumers live their daily and weekly lives as well as the media they’re using. The second wave of data to come from the service this year (the first was released in February), it finds that weekly tablet usage now reaches 19.3% of adults 18-64, and daily reach among this group is up 15% when compared to the data from the previous report. In addition, among tablet users, the top three activities on the device in terms of weekly usage are the internet (excluding email) at 54%, apps (excluding email) at 44%, and email at 37%. Watching videos on a tablet on a weekly basis now encompasses 20% of tablet owners 18-64. Other data from the service, which is used by the likes of Optimedia, Starcom, MediaVest, Mindshare, ESPN, and Turner Broadcasting, include:

  • Watching programming on a DVR now stands at 40% weekly reach and 18% daily reach. This is much higher than VOD, which reaches 13% and 3% of adults 18-64 on a weekly and daily basis, respectively.
  • 8% and 6% of the US adult population watch TV episodes via a streaming service on a weekly and daily basis, respectively. While the Media Behavior Institute agrees that this is still relatively small, it notes that it’s still an increase of over 40% when compared to data from February.
  • Social networking grew 6% to reach 37% of adults 18-64 in the past week.

Online gaming site Miniclip.com has signed an agreement with Worldwide Biggies CEO and entertainment veteran Albie Hecht (Founder of Spike TV and former President of Nickelodeon Entertainment) to develop some of the site’s top games for film, television, and the web. Miniclip says Hecht and Worldwide Biggies will first focus on some of its most popular titles, including Gravity Guy, Hambo, Sketch Star, Canyon Defense, and Monster Island, in order to develop programming that will appeal to the site’s young audience. Miniclip boasts more than 70 million unique game-players each month.

Shine America Digital‘s animated web series Who Knew, which is distributed on Yahoo News every weekday, has hit the 600 episodes milestone and has surpassed 100 million streams to date. The company has ordered an additional 150 episodes that will air over the rest of 2012. The animated series provides a daily dose of news, fun facts, and trivia in 90-second installments.

YouTube stars The Fine Brothers have signed on to produce original content for Revision3, an online programming network that was recently purchased by Discovery Communications. Benny and Rafi Fine currently own and operate a YouTube channel that has close to 1.8 million subscribers and crossed 370 million views in total. They’re the brains behind the React series as well as a multiplatform scripted comedy series called My Music.

The Mercedes-Benz NY Fashion Week officially begins today. IMG Fashion, a division of global media company IMG Worldwide, has partnered with Rightster and YouTube to provide live streaming and on-demand content from the weeklong event on the Live from the Runway channel on the video site. Maybelline New York, which is an official sponsor of Fashion Week, has been partnering with IMG Fashion and YouTube for the past three years to air fashion shows, both live and on-demand, on that channel. However, this year for the first time, the two companies along with Rightster are offering the press the ability to access and embed videos from the fashion shows directly on to their websites via a single portal: video.mbfashionweek.com. The media will have access to 35 shows that will be live from the Lincoln Center in New York as well as recorded videos from over 80 designer shows, all of which they can distribute via their own platforms.

YouTube plans to offer movie rentals via its app on several connected TV platforms and devices later this year, according to a statement released by YouTube hardware partner TP Vision, per GigaOM. This offering will initially be available in only some European countries. TP Vision said that Philips Smart TVs will be among the first TV platforms to offer access to movie rentals through YouTube.

Avail-TVN has inked a deal with Google to provide content for the upcoming Google Fiber broadband TV service, which will offer subscribers access to live and on-demand programming across multiple devices. Per the deal, Avail-TVN will make available an array of digital licensing and enabling technologies that support the platform that Google plans to deploy in Kansas City. The company will also serve up studio, cable, and broadcast network VOD content in a range of formats that support Google Fiber’s multichannel video service. “Google Fiber takes full advantage of the advanced digital video services that Avail-TVN has pioneered in support of high value content that consumers want, on the devices they use the most,” said Jim Riley, CRO at Avail-TVN, in a statement.

IBC 2012: Akamai Technologies has unveiled the Sola Media Solutions portfolio, a cloud-based set of services that is designed to help content providers handle the workflow, storage, and delivery of online video. Built on the Akamai Intelligent Platform, Sola Media consists of: Sola Sphere for cloud-based storage and content delivery, including adaptive bitrate streaming; Sola Vision, which features transcoding and stream packaging capabilities that simplify workflow in order to deliver video across multiple environments, as well as support for multiple levels of content protection and industry initiatives such as TV Everywhere and UltraViolet; Sola Media Analytics for real-time video quality and post-event audience engagement data; and the Luna Control Center, which is a unified web interface that supports all Akamai solutions.

Sorenson Media announced that over half of the NFL’s 32 teams use its Sorenson Squeeze video encoding software for a wide array of online video footage. For example, the Carolina Panthers use the company’s solution to encode and deliver streaming online video content, including a daily news report, a weekly “Panthers Huddle” program, footage and interviews from games and practices, and other content, to the team’s website. Overall, the Panthers produce and distribute more than 20 videos per week using the solution. To demonstrate the growing importance of online video in industries beyond just entertainment, Mike Craft, Senior Producer/Broadcasting and Media Content for the Panthers, said that web-based content has supplanted broadcast over the past several years to the extent that 90% of his time is now spent on online content.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
According to a recent Ericsson ConsumerLab report, there are more people in the US (21% of US-based pay-TV subscribers) who have either reduced or canceled their pay-TV subscription packages than there are those who have increased their spending (12% of US-based respondents). Of those Americans who have reduced or canceled their TV packages, 56% cited “wanting to save money,” 16% pointed to “using free internet services,” and 12% named “no suitable package” as reasons why. The global report consisted of 14 in-home interviews (10 in Chicago and 4 in Sweden) and 12,000 online interviews (1,000 per country), across multiple regions, including the US, UK, China, Spain, Sweden, and Germany.

Color this as unsurprising, but Twitter users like to share photos and videos. A recent eMarketer report took a look at July 2012 data from website analysis company Diffbot, which analyzed over 750,000 links posted to Twitter across the globe and found that 36% were of images, 16% led to articles, and 9% directed users to videos. On the video front, in other unsurprising news, Diffbot data found that YouTube accounted for 60% of all video links on Twitter. As a note, eMarketer forecasts that US adult Twitter users will hit 31.8 million in 2013, a 14.9% increase from 27.7 million in 2012.
