Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning briefing.  As always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here

Tonight’s Premiere:
ESPN: Thursday Night College Football at 730p

Tonight’s Finale:
Comedy Central: Futurama at 10p

Yesterday early afternoon James Jay Lee entered the headquarters of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, Maryland, armed with a gun and an explosive device, taking three people hostage for most of the afternoon. Approximately, 1900 employees work at the Discovery Building and many of the employees were evacuated early on including children in the Discovery Kids Place day care center, while other employees were told to go to the highest floor in the building.  Police Chief Thomas Manger of Montgomery County said Lee was shot dead by police at approximately 450p. The three hostages held by Lee for several hours were safe and unharmed. At least one explosive device went off when police shot Lee, though it was not clear if anything in the building was damaged. Lee was reportedly a longtime protester at the building and was sentenced to six months of supervised probation in March 2008 for disorderly conduct when he was involved in a multi-day protest in February 2008. Lee also allegedly posted a manifesto online, stating humans are ruining the planet and that Discovery should produce programs in support of saving the planet and animals. Late in the day, authorities continued to search the Discovery Building for any further explosive devices.

Tuesday’s address delivered by President Obama from the Oval Office was carried live from 8p to nearly 820p on 11 networks: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, TEL, UNI, CNN, CNBC, CNTRC, FOXNC and MSNBC. The total average audience for the 11 combined networks was 29.2 million viewers. This viewership figure was down -9% compared to President Obama’s address concerning the oil spill on June 15, 2010.

Conan O’Brien yesterday unveiled the name of his new late-night talk show on TBS as … Conan. To support the launch of the new show on November 8 at 11p, TBS is currently airing a series of promos and O’Brien updated his website at TeamCoco.com with a TBS countdown clock and the show’s new name while at the same time launching a YouTube page. Conan will air Monday through Thursdays on TBS.

As of 1201a ET on September 1, AT&T U-verse dropped Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel from its lineup following an impasse between the two entities when the negotiations reached a standstill on August 26. Bill Abbott, President/CEO of Hallmark Channels released this statement late yesterday afternoon:

“When AT&T dropped our networks last night, they made clear that they don’t care to provide their viewers with family-friendly programming made with the 100-year-old legacy of Hallmark quality. AT&T’s charges that Hallmark Channels pulled the plug on our own networks and disadvantaged our own loyal viewers by not negotiating a fair deal for them are not true. Hallmark Channels presented a number of proposals in the course of the negotiations, which were fair and reasonable and, we felt, addressed AT&T’s concerns. Unfortunately, AT&T dropped our signals and we are at an impasse. Hallmark Channels will continue to present high-quality family-friendly programming , including The Martha Stewart Show, new Original Series, 24 hours of Christmas, 14 Original Movies, five holiday-themed specials, and LIVE coverage of ‘The 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade.’ AT&T may not care about family; Hallmark Channels does and will continue to. We hope our U-verse viewers will continue to let AT&T know that they want their channels back. They can call 1-888-MADE-4-FAMILY to voice their concerns.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Fox TV Studios, Foxx/King Entertainment and The Tannenbaum Company are producing the project.

British comedian/actor Eddie Izzard will guest star in Showtime’s series United States of Tara. Izzard will appear in eight episodes during the third season playing a brilliant psychology professor who becomes fascinated with Tara’s Dissociative Identity Disorder. Production on the season three begins this month in Los Angeles with episodes premiering in 2011.

Kevin Rankin (Friday Night Lights) has been cast in a recurring role on HBO’s series Big Love, where he will play a son of hard line polygamists, reports THR.

This day in History:  1963 – “The CBS Evening News” was lengthened from 15 to 30 minutes.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  In 1959 this genre of television series was so popular there were 32 of these shows on air, and 9 of those were in Nielsen’s Top 20.  What genre was this?   WESTERNS – the year before there were 11 Westerns in Nielsen’s Top 20!  Kudos to: Tony Caravello-ABC/NY; Hilary Wolk-Heads Up Creative/NY; Douglas Hochstadt-ABC/NY; David Rubinsohn-RubesMedia/Philadelphia; Bobby Tarantino-TheCoolTV/CTZ; Marc Christian-KMID/Midland Odessa; Leah Broeders-Target/Minneapolis; Jenny Beam-Grand Hotel Marriott Resort Golf Club & Spa/Point Clear AL; Don Wollman-Big Brother/LA; Steve Rubin-Fast Carrier Pictures/LA; Alan Perris-The Television Academy/North Hollywood; Evan Weinstein-The Amazing Race/LA; Sheldon Wiebe-EclipseMagazine.com/Valgary

Today’s Trivia Question:   Who am I?  From a western series, I am part of a pair who specialized in bank and train robberies.  I was the “silver tonged” one – could talk us out of nearly any jam. We were pretty popular with everyone, but over time the safes were harder to crack and the trains tougher to rob, so we decided to change our approach.  Who am I?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
