CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

09/23/04

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 23, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

CBS led the charge on Tuesday night with its finales of Big Brother and Amazing Race tallying a 5.1/14 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research.  NBC and ABC virtually tied for #2, with NBC’s 3.8/10 and ABC’s 3.6/10.

At 8pm CBS led with a 4.1/12, ahead of ABC’s premiere 60m episode of My Wife & Kids (3.4/10). Gilmore Girls on the WB also had its season premiere and averaged a 2.5/7 A18-49, a 4.3/13 among W18-34 and a whopper 6.0/21 among female teens.  UPN also debuted its two series, All of Us and Eve from 8-9p. All of Us delivered a 1.1/4 A18-49, with a 1.7/5 among key women demos, 18-34 and 18-49.  Eve was about on par with its lead-in, with a 1.1/3 in the adult demo, and a 1.8/5 and 1.9/5 among both key adult women demos.

CBS’ Amazing Race amazing finale led the 9-11p race with a 5.6/14 A18-49. At 9pm ABC’s According to Jim premiered with a 4.2/11 (#2 in the time period), and Rodney had its series premiere at 930p with a 3.9/10 (#2 in the time period). One Tree Hill on the WB found a 2.1/5 A18-49 audience, with a stronger 3.7/10 among W18-34, and another whopper female teen showing of 6.5/22. UPN’s Amish in the City had its season finale with its greatest audience coming from W18-34 posting a 2.0/5.

NBC’s Law & Order SVU premiered on NBC at 10p with a 5.2/13 (#2 to Amazing Race), while NYPD Blue on ABC debuted with a 3.3/8.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC     Extreme Makeover [p] at 8pm
CBS     CSI [p] at 9p, Without a Trace [p] at 10p
NBC     ER  [p] at 10p

Casting / Development / Production:

  • Discovery Channel has ordered up 40 episodes of a new manly room makeover series called Dude Room (Norseman Prods). It’s host Josh Temple, watches over a crew who takes over a guy’s house to makeover a room into a decided guy place, minus any feminine or softer touches such as doilies, flowery prints, etc., and replace them with projection rooms, cigar palaces, and the like.  According to Hollywood Reporter, this show is likely to show up as a 5pm strip.

As you have no doubt already heard, Martha Stewart will go to a minimum security jail on October 8.  Before she goes, she found time to hammer out an agreement with Mark Burnett whereby he will advise and consult with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia on various television matters, including a potential primetime series for Martha once she completes her five month incarceration.  She may be the busiest person in prison.

Bill O’Reilly was granted an interview with President Bush, a chat which will be aired in three parts next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday within Fox News’ The O’Reilly’s Factor.

As promised, CBS is quickly setting up an investigative team which will look closely at the CBS process by which the disputed National Guard papers concerning President Bush came to air.  CBS has named Louis Boccardi, former President of the Associated Press for 18 years (retired in 2003), and former US Attorney General Governor Dick Thornburgh.  They will begin their investigation immediately and the results will be made public.

In response to yesterday’s question, What Would You Do? in reference to the syndicated Dr. Phil episode scheduled to air yesterday containing promotional statements for the CBS Primetime Dr. Phil special last night, and a handful of NBC affiliates who said they would edit the syndicated show to remove those statements, you said (here in order of popularity):

  • Agreed with editing out the promotional statements (and for many, even if it runs afoul of contractual obligations with King World)
  • Preempt the episode altogether and air a repeat episode
  • Beef up the Law & Order premiere promos in every break of the show, together with animated lower third promos/bugs
  • Seek reciprocal promotion in the primetime show for the syndicated series
  • As a CBS affiliate, preempt the primetime special so as not to promote the station across town’s daytime ratings magnet

Alternatively, a handful of you took a different approach:

  • How is this any different from any actor appearing on any daytime talker or prime access magazine, and promote his/her new primetime show?
  • The primetime special, though on a different network, actually works in our favor – potentially adding to our daytime audience for Dr. Phil with new viewers and increasing loyalty among the occasional viewers
  • NBC uses its own syndicated shows (Access Hollywood, Extra) to promote NBC primetime shows all the time – Friends final ep for instance. They are holding Dr. Phil to a different standard than any other show on their air.

According to the Tivo Newsletter, the top ten shows Tivo-ed for the week of September 13-19 were in rank order: The Apprencie, CSI, The Sopranos, Joey, Survivor, West Wing, Six Feet Under, ER, CSI: Miami and Will & Grace.  These are the top ten shows recorded by those Tivo users with a Season Pass.

Starz Encore Group LLC announced Amy Kuessner has joined the marketing team as Senior Director/Program Marketing.  This is a newly-created position and an integral component of the new Starz marketing and branding initiatives. Amy reports to Bill Brovsky, VP/Tactical Marketing, and will develop and execute the successful adoption and deployment of corporate marketing programs.

King World Media Sales has upped Bob Cole to VP/Eastern Sales.  Based in New York, Bob will report to Michael Auerbach, SVP/King World Media Sales who in turn reports to Steve Hirsch, President, King World Media Sales.   Bob will oversee the New York media sales team, and will continue to sell national advertising time in King World product to select New York agencies.

Effective January 1, 2005, David T. Cassaro will be named President of Comcast Network Advertising Sales, a new department being established by Comcast’s Programming Investments Division to oversee advertising sales for Comcast’s national networks E! Entertainment Television, The Style Network, G4techTV, International Channel Networks, and Outdoor Life Network.  David will report to Amy L. Banse, EVP/Programming Investments Division, and will work closely with the senior
management of each network to support their unique business objectives and growth.

VOY Pictures Television has named Jose Pretlow as Chairman and Gloria Medel as President of Production.  Jose will provide strategic direction for VOY Pictures Television’s programming efforts, and produce shows both for VOY’s distribution platforms and syndication.  Gloria will develop new programming and oversee day-to-day show production.  Voy Pictures Television is a subsidiary of VOY, LLC, the lifestyle and entertainment company focused on the English-speaking U.S. Latin market and on those consumers discovering Latin culture.

Jay McNamara has been upped to SVP/Sales Strategy and Development, NBC Universal Television Distribution.  The announcement was made today by Jerry Petry, EVP/Business Operations and Sales Strategy, NBC Universal Television Distribution, to whom McNamara reports.  In his new role, Jay will structure and direct NBC Universal Television Distribution’s portfolio of long-term television licensing agreements worldwide, as well as support the Company’s efforts toward global growth of its overall television licensing business.  He will also be responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities against new technologies and emerging markets.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1846:  Based on mathematical calculations that predicted its location, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovers Neptune, the solar system’s eighth planet.  Its existence became known when aberrations in the orbit of Uranus, the seventh planet, led astronomers to conclude that another planet must be altering Uranus’s orbit.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  When Father Mulcahey said, “He’s a good Christian … yet hardly dull at all”, to whom was he referring?  COLONEL SHERMAN POTTER in the Tomato Juice episode. Kudos to: Louis Barbash-Connecting the Dots; Christina Owen-Millenia 3 Comm/Atlanta; Tom Casola-KB Enterprise/Mt. Arlington NJ; Elizabeth Corda-Turner Bcsting/NY; Joseph Sall-Media Answer/Columbia MO; Dan Rolls-Echostar Satellite/Englewood; Steve Howard/Burbank; David Scott Jones-Marleigh Ent/LA.

Today’s Trivia Question:  In the early 1980’s, the famous line from Saturday Night Live, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”  was changed by producer Jean Doumanian, who was with the show for just one season.  During Jean’s brief tenure, what was this line changed to?    (click
to respond to the trivia question and please be sure to include with your answer your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four correct responses from each time zone will be listed in tomorrow’s kudo list.)
