Chef Gordon Ramsay is taking on awful hotels in a new unscripted series for FOX with the working title Hotel Hell and produced by Ramsay’s One Potato Two Potato Inc.  With his experience in operating restaurants and traveling around the world, Ramsay has a keen eye for how hotels should meet guest’s expectations.  The series will follow Ramsay and his team of hospitality experts to different locales as they fix struggling hotels, middling motels and bad news bed and breakfast inns.  Hotel owners can apply to be on the show by visiting: www.theconlincompany.com/nowcasting/hotelhell .  One Potato Two Potato Inc. is part of the All3Media group.

Everything may be big in Texas including how many chefs are competing on the ninth season of Bravo’s Top Chef: Texas.  Twenty-nine chefs, nearly double the previous seasons, will become chef’testants on the show though only 16 will head to Texas to compete in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, when the new season opens November 2 at 10p.  Padma Lakshmi is returning as host and head judge along with Chef Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons and the threesome will be joined by chef and restaurateur Emeril Lagasse and Chef Hugh Acheson as judges.  Many celebrities will make appearances throughout the season including Charlize Theron, Pee-wee Herman, Cat Cora and Patti LaBelle among others.  Magical Elves produces the series.

TV veteran Florence Henderson co-hosts a new cooking-themed show on RLTV titled Good Food, Good Deeds beginning September 29 at 8p.  The network is teaming with the Meals On Wheels Association of America to present a series where a celebrity guest fills in as a Meals On Wheels volunteer.  The show also features Henderson and co-host nutritionist Joy Bauer in the kitchen preparing a tasty healthy meal with Bauer further giving tips on foods to buy and how to make meals that are easy and delicious.  Future celebrity guests include Linda Gray, Mariette Hartley and Bob Eubanks.

The sophomore season of sketch show Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time debuts on Comedy Central October 5 at 1030p directly after the fall season launch of South Park.  The series is executive produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and Culver Entertainment. A second season of The Will: Family Secrets Revealed is on tap starting October 19 at 9p on Investigation Discovery.  Prior to the new season debut on October 19, the network will air the one-hour special The Will: Outrageous Final Wishes at 8p.  The series explores the hidden agendas and contentious stories involving families receiving an inheritance from a rich and sometime famous relative. The new season examines the disputed wills of Howard Hughes to Conway Twitty.  The ten-episode season is produced by CMJ Productions II Inc. for ID.

~ DEVELOPMENT, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

On Monday, the new unscripted syndicated court show Last Shot with Judge Gunn debuts in daily syndication.  The half-hour show is cleared in more than 80% of the US and 130 episodes have been ordered for the opening season.  Matt Battaglia Productions and Caravan Entertainment are jointly producing the series and Trifecta Entertainment is distributing.

Canadian TV series Less Than Kind, produced and distributed by Breakthrough Entertainment, is making its US premiere this fall on DirecTV’s new specialty channel Audience Network.  The dramedy series centers on teen Sheldon Blecher (Jesse Camacho) and his loving though dysfunctional Jewish family based in Winnipeg.  A third season of the series begins in January on HBO Canada and The Movie Network Canada.

Independent producer and distributor of first-run syndicated fare and owner of seven 24-hour hi-def TV networks, Entertainment Studios is launching its 29th hi-def program, Justice For All with Judge Cristina Perez in fall 2012.  Judge Perez previously starred in the Twentieth Television syndicated show Cristina’s Court which won three Daytime Emmy Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Justice For All will be launching in both broadcast syndication and on cable networks in English and Spanish.  Entertainment Studios serves as producer and distributor of Justice For All with Judge Cristina Perez.

Beginning next Monday, Me-TV opens its fall schedule with recent classic TV show acquisitions from NBCUniversal Television Distribution that will be added to recent pick-ups from Twentieth Television, CBS Television Distribution and other independent producers and distributors.  Programming acquired from NBCUniversal’s library includes The Rockford Files, Kojak and Columbo as well as Leave it to Beaver, Dragnet, Adam 12, Boris Karloff’s Thriller, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Wagon Train among others.  Several of the NBCUniversal programs will begin airing on Me-TV next Monday while others will be added throughout the coming years.  Me-TV will additionally premiere the original Star Trek and Batman series this fall and further has picked up Daniel Boone and The Rifleman from the Peter Rodgers Organization and the original Laurel & Hardy shorts and features were picked up via RHI Entertainment Distribution.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FUEL TV is partnering with Ford and its new action sports campaign, Octane Academy to produce a new television series using the same name, Octane Academy.  The motorsports series, FUEL TV’s first-ever, will tag along after driving contestants of Octane Academy as they endure hard challenges at four action sports camps headed by well-known action sports drivers.  The 12-episode series will divide up by featuring three episodes at each of the four camps and is slated to air in early 2012 on FUEL TV.

A new reality show is in the works from Roy Bank and his new company, Banca Studio featuring former Lost actor Doug Hutchison and his young wife, Courtney Stodden, per THR.  The show does not have a title as of yet.  Hutchison also appeared in the film The Green Mile as well as The X Files.  Bank previously was the President/Television at Merv Griffin Entertainment.

NBC’s Parenthood added Alexandra Daddario (White Collar) to its cast list for this current third season beginning with episode 8, cites TVLine.  Daddario will play Rachel, the new receptionist at Adam (Peter Krause) and Crosby’s (Dax Shepard) new business.  Parenthood airs on NBC Tuesdays at 10p.

Despite ABC not announcing a return date for its comedy Cougar Town, the show is bulking up its cast roster with Susan Blakely playing Claire, the mother of Christa Miller’s cranky character Ellie, per TVLine

Note on new and returning Syndicated Shows:
Cynopsis
does not report on the premiere episodes or premiere week results of new and returning syndication shows, but rather we pick up on the reporting via our syndication charts when the show has been on the air for a couple of weeks.  At that point, the field has leveled a bit because the halo effect of marketing and promotions have settled and the strength of the rating is a better reflection of the show itself, not the promotion.  This has been a Cynopsis policy for more than a dozen years.  Look for lists of new syndicated show results in the coming weeks.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was “gleeful” at #1 Tuesday among the A18-49 viewers with a 4.0/11, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS won the time period as NCIS opened a new season at 4.3/12 with the season launch of FOX’s Glee next at 4.0/11 while NBC’s The Biggest Loser debuted its season with a 2.3/7 tying for third place with Univision’s Teresa also at 2.3/7.  FOX won the 9p hour with the series launch of New Girl 4.8/12 and the season opener of Raising Hope 3.1/ for an average of 4.0/10 for the hour; coming in second place was the season premiere of CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.6/9 and in third was the season debut of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results Show at 2.9/7.  Finishing the night at 10p, CBS hit #1 with the series premiere of Unforgettable at 2.9/8 followed by ABC’s Body of Proof sophomore season bow at 2.2/6 and NBC’s Parenthood, in its second week, in a close third position at 2.1/6.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   What two people wrote the theme song to the Tonight Show? Johnny Carson and Paul Anka, sort of.  The music is a reworking of Anka’s Toot Sweet.  Anka then added lyrics and the song was called “It’s Really Love,” recorded by Annette Funicello.  Carson re-wrote the lyrics, which were never used, and received half the royalties and credit for the song.  Kudos to: Gary A. Stark-WEWS-TV/Cleveland; Nanette Anderson-MyDiscovery/Silver Spring, MD; David Burke-Quad-City Times/Davenport, IA; Keith Paxton-KDFW KDFI/Dallas; John Kukla-KDFW/Dallas; Paul Gluck-Magnetic North Media/Ardmore, PA; Lewis Cosby/ Eastern Knoxville; Paul Blutter-General American Group, Inc./Northridge, CA; Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-M and S Entertainment,Inc./LA; Don Surath-CBS Media Solutions/San Francisco; Jeff Mirkin-Family Game Night/Hollywood; Arnie Meissner/Lake Balboa, CA

Today’s Trivia Question:  What show was allowed to stay on despite poor ratings because they added a monkey?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
