On the cusp of its summer season finale, CBS renewed Big Brother for a 14th edition slated to air next summer.  The most recent edition of Big Brother has tallied the highest ratings and audience delivery since 2004 with 8.11 million total viewers, a 3.1/9 rating/share among A18-49 and a 2.5/9 rating/share with A18-34.  Big Brother is from Fly on the Wall Entertainment, in association with Endemol USA.

Two long-time friends with a passion for food and motorcycles helm a new 12-part series, Hairy Bikers on HISTORY launching October 14 at 10p. Paul Patranella is a 4-star classically trained French chef and Bill Allen is a well-known motorcycle mechanic.  The pair will bike through America sampling food and local American history and traditions along with way.  BBC Worldwide Productions is behind the HISTORY series which is based on an original Hairy Bikers series airing on BBC Two in the UK that has completed its eighth season.

Matchmaker Siggy Flicker is featured in a new relationship reality show set in New York on VH1 titled Why Am I Still Single? debuting October 16 at 9p.  In each episode, Siggy helps two clients (one male, one female) improve their dating skills which may lead them to finding true love.  The series is from Left/Right.

Oxygen set the premiere date for its eight episode docu-series Bachelorette Party: Las Vegas for October 17 at 10p.  The weekly series, developed by Gavin Polone of Pariah and PB&J Television, follows a bride-to-be and her female wedding party and closest friends as they party in outrageous decadence at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Anime series featuring popular Marvel superheroes continue to be a fixture on G4’s schedule this fall as the network premieres the 12-episode half-hour series X-Men starting October 21 at 11p.  The new original anime series features the voice of actor Scott Porter (The Good Wife, Friday Night Lights) as Cyclops.  X-Men is the latest anime series that is part of G4 and Marvel’s exclusive partnership including Iron Man and Wolverine.  The fourth anime series Blade will debut on G4 this winter. The series are produced by Madhouse for Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ).

Original series Bar Rescue received a second season order for 10 new episodes from Spike TV.  Hosted by Jon Taffer, Bar Rescue launched on Spike July 17 and this last Sunday’s episode delivered a series high of 1.3 million viewers.  The show follows Taffer, one of the country’s best restaurant and bar consultants as he gives failing establishments one more chance to become profitable.  Production on the second season will commence this winter using venues around the US with a planned summer 2012 premiere.  Bar Rescue is produced by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA.

A second season of the fashion reality series All On The Line with Joe Zee debuts November 18 at 930p on Sundance Channel.  In the new season, Joe Zee, the Creative Director at ELLE since 2007 will rescue well-known designers who need to makeover their businesses or design techniques or both.  One designer working with Zee in the upcoming season includes Nicole Miller, who enlists Zee’s help to launch her new line at New York Fashion Week 2011.  Authentic Entertainment produces the series.

Meg Caswell was just crowned the winner of HGTV’s reality competition show HGTV Design Star.  As the winner, Meg was granted her own five-episode show on the network, HGTV Great Rooms which premieres this Saturday at 6p.  Set in Meg’s hometown of Chicago, the new series has her identifying “design crimes” and transforming tired, outdated kitchens and great rooms into gorgeous spaces.

Also this Saturday, The Weather Channel (TWC) debuts new series Weathering Disaster at 8p with repeats at 11p and 2a.  The half-hour series with six episodes is sponsored by Farmers Insurance and visits people whose homes were destroyed by natural disasters and wildfires and documents their efforts to rebuild in the same area with help from volunteers and their insurance company.  Episodes will meet individuals in tornado torn Joplin, MO, where Hurricane Ike struck in Texas to the site of wildfires in Yorba Linda, CA and more.

Next Monday, Discovery Channel reveals the underbelly of America in a new three-part series American Underworld.  The three episodes are helmed by Mark Allen Johnson who infiltrates the country’s most extreme, violent and secretive subcultures.  American Underworld debuts on Monday at 10p and is produced for Discovery Channel by The Incubator.

Earlier this week, Mediacom posted a letter to FCC Media Bureau head Bill Lake saying its inaction in the wake of station blackouts in several markets is equivalent to the FCC siding with LIN in its ongoing retransmission-consent impasse with the broadcasting company.  Mediacom counsel Seth Davidson urged the FCC to “reconsider its decision to sit on the sidelines in the face of prolonged blackouts in the smaller markets affected by LIN’s strategy of holding consumers hostage in its effort to extract a triple-digit price increase.”  Since Medicacom and LIN have not settled a new carriage deal, stations in Alabama, Florida, Indiana and North Carolina went dark at the end of August.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

PBS’ flagship station, WNET in New York which also produces nearly one-third of all PBS programming will oversee the international distribution of its proprietary programming consisting of American Masters, Nature and Great Performances among others.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Following a bidding war, ABC snapped up a comedy project from Will Gluck titled Walk of Shame.  The single-camera comedy is about a group of 20-something New York friends.  Sony Pictures Television is producing.  Casey Wilson and June Raphael will write and the duo plus Gluck will serve as executive producers.

Additionally, ABC okayed a drama project from John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) described as a crime drama about a Walter Mitty-style lead character.  Producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott at Di Bonaventura Pictures Television are attached as nonwriting executive producers.  The short story about Walter Mitty was written by James Thurber in 1939 and was adapted into a feature film starring Danny Kaye in 1947.

The Western genre keeps popping up as NBC bought a Western period drama called The Frontier from Sony Pictures Television and executive producer Shaun Cassidy.  The Frontier is set in the 1840s about a varied group of people who set out from Missouri to embark on a journey through America’s wild landscape in search of riches and dreams in the West.  Cassidy will executive produce the project along with Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinetz at Prospect Park.  If a pilot is ordered, Thomas Schlamme will direct.  Sony Pictures TV is producing with Prospect Park.

FOX is developing another potential superhero drama based on DC Comics’ veteran hero The Spectre.  FOX ordered a script based on the hero written and executive produced by Brandon Camp.  Warner Bros. Television and Gerber Pictures are behind the project with Bill Gerber on board to also serve as executive producer.  The Spectre first originated in DC’s More Fun Comics #51 in 1940 and was later resurrected with its own title in 1967.

American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe established a new production company, Nigel Lythgoe Productions and has a batch of projects percolating at various networks including E!, truTV and CBS among others, cites THR.  Lythgoe’s new company is a joint venture with American Idol’s 19 Entertainment and a successor to his Big Red 2 Entertainment.  Kary McHoul is working with Lythgoe as President and George David Monas was tapped as VP/Production.  At the get go, Lythgoe is developing several unscripted projects with Alice Cooper, Robin Antin, the founder of Pussycat Dolls, Dr. Laura Berman as well as Kim Kardashian.

Two actors have signed on to star in the upcoming 12-part one-hour miniseries Titanic  Blood & Steel from De Angelis Group.  Chris Noth (The Good Wife, Law & Order) and Neve Campbell (The Glass Man, Party of Five) join the cast following news that Sir Derek Jacobi will headline the series.  Scheduled to be delivered in 2012, the series marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s maiden voyage.  The miniseries is a co-production of RAI Italy, Los Angeles-based 3 Arts, UK-based Artists Studio, France’s Marathon Group, Germany’s Tandem Communication, Ireland’s Epos Films and Spain-based Antena 3.

A number of celebrities are on board to host PBS’ first-ever Arts Fall Festival beginning October 14 and airing on consecutive Friday nights (except December 9) through December 16.  The nine-part performing arts series celebrity hosts include Rainn Wilson, film director Taylor Hackford, Andy Garcia, Roseanne Cash, Linda Ronstadt and Paula Zahn among others who will introduce the programs and offer behind-the-scenes commentary.  (Please check local listings for PBS’ schedule.)

Sarah Paulson lands a four-episode role playing a medium Billie Dean on FX’s American Horror Story series.  Much of the time, Paulson’s character will interact with the nosy neighbor character played by Jessica Lange.  American Horror Story opens October 5 at 10p on FX.

Note on new and returning Syndicated Shows:
Cynopsis
does not report on the premiere episodes or premiere week results of new and returning syndication shows, but rather we pick up on the reporting via our syndication charts and info provided to us by the shows only once the show has been on the air for a couple of weeks.  At that point, the field has leveled a bit because the halo effect of marketing and promotions have settled and the strength of the rating is a better reflection of the show itself, not the promotion.  This has been a Cynopsis policy for more than a dozen years.  Look for lists of new syndicated show results in the coming weeks.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC opened the fall season of premieres Tuesday in first place with A18-49 at 2.4/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision’s Teresa did best at 8p with a 2.2/7 and ABC’s Wipeout was #2 at 2.0/6.  At 8p, The CW also debuted a new season of 90210 in sixth place with a 0.9/3.  NBC held court at 9p with a 3.8/10 as the end of America’s Got Talent neared followed by Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino at 2.5/7.  The series launch of Ringer on The CW also happened during 9p delivering a 1.2/3 which ranked fourth this hour.  Then at 10p, NBC won with the new season debut of Parenthood at 2.2/6 and CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles encore was next at 1.7/5.
