Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 15, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. ESPN has signed a new 8-year deal with Major League Baseball for 80 regular season games, the Home Run Derby and other all-star programming and events (tho not the All Star Game which is licensed to Fox). The multi-year (thru 2013) multi-platform deal includes an exclusive component for games on Sunday and non-exclusive Monday and Wednesday night games. The ESPN rights expand out to new-media which includes PDAs and wireless devices. The multi-network Hurricane Katrina telethon Shelter from the Storm last Friday night was watched by 22 million people across 29 television outlets, and took in approx $30 million in relief funds. The telethon on NBC a week earlier, watched by approx 8-1/2 million folks, took in nearly $40 million. Donations from both went to the American Red Cross, and donations from the latter could also be directed to the Salvation Army. Tonight’s Premiere: * MORE GOOD STUFF *Variety reports Turner and BET will share the network window to the feature film Diary of a Made Black Woman from Lions Gate. Reportedly, TNT/TBS will pay in the neighborhood of $5 million, while BET will pick up a $2.5 million tab. The film drew in more than $50 million at the domestic box office, so the collective $7.5 million fee is right in the standard ballpark of 15% of domestic box office. The film will go first to TBS/TNT in July 2007 for a two year period. In 2009 it goes over to BET for one year, and then returns to TNT/TBS for two more years before finishing up BET for one final year. The season finale of FX’s Rescue Me on Tuesday night pulled in 3.6 million viewers and delivered 2.4 million in the all-important A18-49 demo. The season premieres of My Fair Brady and Breaking Bonaduce on VH1 delivered 1.2 million viewers and 934,000 viewers, respectively. TBS has a new show launching on December 7 at 10p called Daisy Does America. Daisy is British comedian Daisy Donovan, who over the course of nine episodes, will attempt to turn herself into the All-American Girl as she travels the country. Robin Leach is returning the airwaves – the radio airwaves – with ABC Radio Networks and a new one minute entertainment feature called Vegas Deluxe. Leach will take listeners thru all the celebrity happenings in Vegas, which he can easily do because as their press release points out, Leach is invited to virtually every party and event in town. mtvU will launch a new reality series in conjunction with Yahoo! called IMU: I Miss You. The show will premiere on mtvU this month, and follows three college couples as they attempt to weather a long-distance relationship. Each couple will communicate with each other only using Yahoo! communication devices – that is Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Mobile, Yahoo! Messenger with Voice, and Yahoo! 360° community service with blogging and photo sharing tools. And if they can manage to stick it out for a full month, and get the viewers on their side, they could win a trip to Europe. Viewers vote for their favorite couple online at hte mtvU website, or the Yahoo! show website Perhaps you remember the series on Food Network last year called The Next Food Network Star where the winning chef(s) get their own six-episode series on the network. Well, the winning chefs’ show is launching this Sunday at 930am, called Party Line with Dan and Steve. Still think you could be a chef on television? Your chance is coming around again as Food Network launches its second search for the Next Food Network Star, with returning host Marc Summers. Information on this year’s contest, rules, etc., can be found at www.FoodNetwork.com starting this Sunday immediately after Dan and Steve’s new show. The New York Times Company has agreed to purchase Viacom owned KAUT/Oklahoma City, a UPN affiliate. The purchase will give NY Times a duopoly in the market, already owning the NBC station, KFOR. Subject to FCC approval, the parties expect the deal to be completed by the end of the calendar year. Starting Monday, September 19 – all three daily Cynopsis editions will be available in Podcast form! If you’re not familiar, that’s an audio file you can listen to on your computer, or download to a portable mp3 player (such as an iPod). This edition of Cynopsis is already available as a podcast; coming Monday Cynopsis Kids and Cynopsis: Multi-Cultural Edition will also be available. There are two ways to subscribe – you can either go to www.cynopsis.com and you’ll find the instructions there; or, if you’re already familiar with iTunes, you’ll subscribe under podcasts, menu item Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast and then cut and paste the URL of the podcast(s) you’d like to download: * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *The WB has signed a talent holding deal with two – Brandy and Nick Lachey. No, they didn’t come as a package – WB signed separate deals for both. Brandy you’ll remember was the star of the UPN sitcom Moesha, and Nick Lachey has guest starred in a couple of primetime series including WB’s Charmed. For Lachey, the WB is looking to develop a project with Brillstein-Grey TV, tho no word yet what genre this project would fall into. Fox Reality Channel has ordered up its first original series – Reality Remix from Natural 9 Entertainment, says Hollywood Reporter. The show is a 30m daily “news” program on the goings-on in the world of reality television. Also from Hollywood Reporter, Fuel TV, another Fox owned cable network, has also ordered a new original series, called The Daily Habit. Airing daily, as you may have suspected, the show will focus on the news, music, products of particularly appeal to the young action sports audience. Talent will include Zeke Piestrup, Brande Roderick and Ehren “Danger” McGhehey. Ever wonder what it would be like in the last few days before you were court-ordered to begin a one year jail sentence? Me too. Apparently, Edmonds Entertainment wondered the same thing, so they developed and are currently producing a reality show starring Lil’ Kim who was convicted on charges of perjury and conspiracy after lying to a grand jury in 2001. According to Variety, Edmonds Ent. has had five or so networks express interest in the project. Lil’ Kim begins her jail sentence on Monday, and Edmonds’ cameras will follow as far as they can. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *The Board of HIT Entertainment announced the appointment of Peter Byrne as EVP/ International Licensing, Merchandising and Home Entertainment. Byrne’s responsibilities include expanding the existing Consumer Products and Home Entertainment businesses for HIT’s classic preschool brands, as well as launching new content across all major international territories. Byrne is based in the company’s London office and reports to Bruce Steinberg, CEO. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. sales executive Joe Dugan has been named to the newly created position of SVP/CNN Digital Ad Sales. The announcement was made by Greg D’Alba, COO/CNN Ad Sales and Marketing. In his new position, Joe will oversee all of CNN’s domestic digital ad sales initiatives. Dugan, based in New York, will report directly to Greg D’Alba. * RATINGS *Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis: On the strength of two premieres – one new series and one returning, Fox delivered the goods on Tuesday with a 4.4/12 A18-49 rating, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
