The 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, which will air on CBS December 26 at 9p, will honor in 2012 Bluesman Buddy Guy, actor Dustin Hoffman, comedian and television host David Letterman, ballerina Natalia Makarova and rock band Led Zeppelin. CBS has aired this annual special each year since its debut.
A second season of Curiosity premieres October 7 at 9p on Discovery Channel. Narrated by The Good Wife’s Josh Charles, Curiosity goes in-depth on one topic per episode using expert opinions to answer “what if?” questions. The series is a co-production of Discovery Channel and Dragonfly Film and Television Productions.
Comedy Cougar Town will premiere on TBS beginning January 8.
When series The Will: Family Secrets Revealed returns to Investigation Discovery this October, the stories highlighted in the new third season will feature celebrities whose wills are being contested. The celebrities spotlighted include Ritchie Valens, Jerry Garcia, Gary Coleman as well as country music superstar Tammy Wynette among others. The Will: Family Secrets Revealed debuts October 18 at 9p and is produced for Investigation Discovery by CMJ Productions II Inc.
Oxygen renewed docu-series I’m Having Their Baby for a second season. In its first season, the series averaged 840,000 total viewers and 327,000 W18-34 through five episodes, according to Nielsen. Casting is underway for the second season of I’m Having Their Baby which will premiere on Oxygen in 2013. The series is produced by Hud:sun Media.
Drama series The Glades starring Matt Passmore was granted a fourth season by A&E Network. During its third season, The Glades averaged 4.1 million total viewers. Production on the fourth season of The Glades will commence soon and A&E will launch the new season next year. Fox Television Studios produces The Glades for A&E Network.
FX’s season five premiere of Sons of Anarchy on Tuesday with a 90-minute episode from 10-1130p has become the most-watched episode in the series’ history, based on Live+Same Day from Nielsen. The debut episode delivered 5.37 million total viewers and 3.5 million with A18-49 and 3.45 million among A25-54. Combined with two more encore runs at 1130p and 1a, Sons of Anarchy tallied 7.5 million total viewers and 4.86 million A118-49 viewers for the night.
Actress Claire Malis Callaway, 69, has died. Ms. Callaway starred in the ABC daytime drama One Life to Live and also played a mom on NBC’s 1980s sitcom The Facts of Life. Ms. Callaway’s character on The Facts of Life was the divorced mother of Nancy McKeon’s character and before that she played Dorian, the matriarch of the Cramer family on OLTL from February 1977 to April 1979 and was later replaced in the role by Robin Strasser who would play the role for three decades.

Style Media acquired the US rights to the British docu-soap Made in Chelsea from NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution. The series follows the lives and relationships of a group of stylish 20-somethings who live and party in one of London’s exclusive areas, Chelsea. Style Network will debut the series November 12 at 8p with back-to-back episodes. Made in Chelsea is produced by Monkey Kingdom and recently completed its third season in the UK.
Bellum Entertainment is launching several syndicated weekend shows this fall: Unsealed: Alien Files and Unsealed: Conspiracy Files, both half-hour series that investigate UFOs, paranormal activity and conspiracy theories debut the week of September 17 and each are cleared in 72% of the US TV markets. Cooking and nutrition series Now Eat This! With Rocco Dispirito also debuts the week of September 17 with 75% clearance in the US. E/I trivia show On the Spot is back for a second season cleared in 92% of the country and the E/I franchise Animal Atlas returns for a ninth season in 91% of US markets.
The CW handed a script order to a one-hour drama project titled Copeland Prep set at a secondary school from Bret Easton Ellis, Josh Schwartz and his Fake Empire colleagues and Catherine Hardwicke. Ellis will pen the script and serve as EP along with Fake Empire’s Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Len Goldstein and Nicky Weinstock for Warner Bros. Television. Hardwicke will be an executive consultant on the project.
Community star Donald Glover is developing a new show for NBC with 30 Rock EP Matt Hubbard. The project will be loosely based on Glover’s life and will likely star him. Since Glover is still part of the cast of Community, this new project will take second position. NBC is close to giving the Glover project a put-pilot commitment with a large penalty. Universal Television is producing.
Jason Sudeikis rejoins NBC’s Saturday Night Live for the show’s 38th season even though his contract had expired after last season. In this political season, Sudeikis will play Governor Romney as well as possibly having other creative input on the show.
Jennifer Lopez is partnering with English-language cable network nuvoTV that targets US Latinos. The exclusive partnership has Lopez and the network involved in a creative, production and marketing relationship to enhance nuvoTV’s mission in delivering entertainment content for the Latino audience. Lopez will further have an ownership stake in nuvoTV. Lopez and her production company, Nuyorican Productions will work together on all creative facets including programming strategy, production and marketing. Lopez will additionally promote the network and work with the network to develop new content for the Latino audience and will work in tandem with nuvoTV’s distribution and advertising partners to help grow nuvoTV’s overall business. Lopez will serve as EP on nuvoTV projects together with her production partners, Simon Fields and Benny Medina. The first Nuyorican produced project for nuvoTV will be a music special based on Lopez’s current Dance Again World Tour.
Bravo Mediahas five new scripted projects in development:
- Heathers from Sony Pictures Television and writer/EP Mark Rizzo is a modern-day remake of the cult classic 1980s film picking up 20 years later with Veronica moving back to Sherwood with her teenage daughter who enters high school and deals with the next generation of mean girls. Jenny Bicks serves as EP along with Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi for Lakeshore Entertainment.
- The Apartment (wt) is about two 20-something siblings who surprisingly inherit the love nest where their mother had an 18-year love affair. After their shock they decide to rent out the Manhattan apartment to other people who want a private space to conduct their extra-marital affairs. From Universal TV and writer/EP Jessica Queller and EPs Karey Burke and Todd Holland for Dark Toy Entertainment.
- The Darlings (wt) is based on the novel by Christina Alger about a high-society family in Manhattan who is pulled into a financial scandal which drives them to suicide and exposes the family’s secrets. From Fox Television Studios and written and executive produced by Stu Zicherman; Sarah Condon also serves as EP.
- All American Girl is based loosely on writer Jenni Ross’ mother’s stint as Fashion Editor at Seventeen magazine in the 1970s. The drama spans three time periods and centers on three women who all work at the female lifestyle magazine All American Girl. From Fox Television Studios with Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano as EPs for Depth of Field. Jenni Ross will also serve as co-EP.
- Rita is an adaptation of a Danish format of the same name; a family drama about an outspoken private school teacher who struggles to raise her own three teenage kids while dealing with the overprotective parents at her school. Produced by Fox Television Studios and written by Krista Vernoff who also serves as EP with Henrik Bastin and Mikkel Bondesen as EPs for Fuse Entertainment 2.0.
Emma Bell (The Walking Dead) joins the cast of TNT’s Dallas as a series regular for season two. Bell will play a beautiful privileged girl named Emma raised by her grandmother.
Casting Call: Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell is now casting. Rive Gauche Television made multiple deals for its new unscripted crime series, Happily Never After. The series has been sold to broadcasters in many territories including Foxtel in Australia, Sweden’s TV4, Discovery in Poland and Turner in Latin America.
UK-based ISM Entertainment, a full-service entertainment and marketing agency has launched a Branded Entertainment Division at Black Hangar Studios, an independent studio production facility located in Basingstoke, 40 minutes from central London. ISM’s goal is to offer entertainment marketing solutions for consumer brands and UK productions.
UK distributor Scorpion TV inked several content deals prior to MIPCOM. Conquering the World was sold to Red Bull Media in Austria, Globosat in Brazil, Spafax for British Airways and RDS in French-speaking Canada; 40 episodes of the disability series Attitude plus six Paralympic specials were acquired by Accessible Media in Canada and Nezavisna in Croatia and Globosat in Brazil also picked up Paralympic content; Al Hurra in the Middle East and LIC in China acquired Race and Intelligence: Science’s Last Taboo and Al Arabiya News Channel in UAE and SIC in Portugal picked up the Egyptian taxi driver documentary Another Night on Earth; and Japan’s NHK picked up Defusing Human Bombs. At MIPCOM, Scorpion TV brings the following new programming: Intersexion (52 min) from Ponsonby productions; Ever Wondered (20 eps/30m) from Buto Productions; The Naked Option (52 min) from Candace Schermerhorn Productions; and Inside Tattooing from Buto Productions.

Clarifications: In our Wednesday edition, we did a snapshot of new and returning syndicated talk shows. New syndicated show Katie from Disney-ABC Domestic Television delivered a 2.8 HH rating and an 8 share with its debut on Monday which tied with the 2006 premiere of Rachael Ray from CTD with a 2.8/9.
The Wendy Williams Show is distributed by Debmar-Mercury; Twentieth Television sells advertising for the show.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC with its lineup of new shows was #1 Tuesday at 2.9/8 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s The Voice opened a new season winning the 8p hour with a 4.0/12 while Univision with a combination of Por Ella Soy Eva and Camino Al Mundial at an average of 1.5/5. At 9p, NBC won with the premiere of new sitcoms Go On and The New Normal at an average of 3.0/9 (Go On delivered a 3.4/10 and The New Normal posted a 2.5/7) and Univision’s Camino Al Mundial trailed in second place at 1.9/5. Then at 10p, Univision scored the best ratings this hour with more of Camino Al Mundial at 2.1/6 and the season premiere of NBC’s Parenthood was #2 with a 1.9/5.

Showtime Networks Inc. (SNI) elevated Christina Spade to EVP/CFO and she begins her new post on January 1, 2013. Christina succeeds Jerry Scro who will retire in January after being with SNI for more than 23 years. Christina will oversee all financial matters associated to SNI’s businesses in addition to managing the budgeting, planning, forecasting and accounting of all business divisions within SNI.

Tricon Films & Television hired film and television veteran Lewin Webb to head all scripted development and also is charged with expanding the division. Lewin joins Tricon with a slate of projects in the works with his latest project being the feature film I Declare War which he produced and launched this week at the Toronto International Film Festival. Tricon has offices in Toronto and Los Angeles.
Full-service creative agency, bpg Advertising tapped director Elaine Cantwell to lead the company’s new branding division. Previously, Elaine has produced branding packages for such companies as STARZ!, Showtime, ABC, Disney, A&E and Target.
