~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NCIS EP Gary Glasberg promised a “pretty damn heart-wrenching” farewell for Ziva David, the popular character played by Cote De Pablo, who quit the show. In an open letter to fans, Glasberg said of upcoming season eleven, “Prepare yourselves for a moment in television history. Images that will end up in the archives.” NCIS returns to CBS Tuesday, September 24 at 8p.

NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said at an investors’ conference Wednesday that while NBC lags behind ABC and CBS in profitability, “Broadcast remains a very, very big opportunity” for the company. Not only does Burke expect to grab more cash in retrans fees as current distribution deals expire, he said ratings should get a boost from February’s Winter Olympics, “a great launch pad for all our spring shows.”

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group chairman Bonnie Hammer explained the thinking behind launching Esquire Network on Style, not G4 as planned. “The brand lanes were pretty clear where Bravo lived, where E! is living and where Oxygen has been,” Hammer told the Hollywood Reporter. “Then we looked at Style, and it overlapped with all three.” Moreover, Style was averaging a much lower 79,000 viewers in A18-49. Esquire debuts Monday, September 23.

CNBC offers a peek inside mansion gates in Secret Lives of the Super Rich. Robert Frank reports, with an assist by NYC super broker Dolly Lenz, on mega-mansions, yachts and Ferraris, and an over-the-top wedding for a wealthy groom and his Playboy playmate. Eight-ep series debuts Wednesday, September 25 at 9p.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles will honor Sacha Baron Cohen at its 2013 Britannia Awards for the British actor/writer’s “bravery and comic ingenuity,” said BAFTA LA chairman Gary Dartnell. Ceremony takes place in L.A. on Saturday, November 9, and will be broadcast on BBC America November 10 at 8p.

Targeted TV ad specialist Visible World is testing a smart TV app that lets viewers respond to promos by setting on-screen alerts for shows they want to watch. Just before the show starts, the viewer gets a prompt to tune in, no matter what kind of content is being watched (or played). It’s a way for viewers to catch the content they want – and for nets to gauge the effectiveness of their promos.

Target is getting in the digital video game, aiming for a more family-friendly offering than what’s available now. Deals are in place with major studios like Disney and Warner Bros., as well as TV networks, but keeping it simple may be the key: the retailer’s research shows half its customer base has never downloaded or streamed video entertainment.

The Killing is most sincerely dead. AMC canceled the Fox Television Studios drama after season two, then brought it back, but said it won’t invite the show back for a fourth go-round. While the 2011 series premiere drew 2.7 million viewers, the season three finale earned 1.5 million.

Reality show Alaskan Women Looking for Love relocates six women frustrated with the dating pool up north to sunny Miami Beach. Six-part fish-out-of-water series debuts on TLC Sunday, October 6 at 10p.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Fox is bringing back So You Think You Can Dance for an eleventh season, exec producer and judge Nygel Lythgoe announced on the dancing competition’s season finale Tuesday night. (Winners: Fik-Shun and Amy Yakima.)

But it will include her husband, David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), reports E!. Ep will air later this fall.

Syfy drama Defiance has added William Atherton (Centennial) and Anna Hopkins (Circle of Friends) to its season two cast. Atherton will play jaded Earth Republic official Viceroy Mercado; Hopkins joins the show as fearless soldier Jessica Rai. Sophomore season launches in June, 2014.

Michelle Monaghan (Source Code) joins HBO drama pilot Open, from Ryan Murphy Productions and Fox 21. Monaghan also stars in the net’s eight-ep True Detective, debuting in January 2014.

Covert Affairs has enlisted Jonathan Togo (CSI: Miami) for season four. Togo will play family man Nelson Smith. The USA spy drama ends a ten-ep run on Tuesday, September 17 at 9p, returning for six more on Thursday, October 17.

Caitriona Balfe (Super 8) has won the female lead in Starz‘ adaptation of best-selling book series Outlander, from Sony Pictures Television. Starz placed a 16-ep order for the drama.

~ RATINGS ~

NBC‘s Million Second Quiz dropped 12 percent on Tuesday from its 1.5 A18-49 debut on Monday. Good news: this time, it improved in the second half hour. America’s Got Talent fell 8 percent with 2.3, but NBC still won the night with a 2.0 rating/6 share.

So You Think You Can Dance had to take a break in the middle of its tenth season live finale on Tuesday for President Obama’s 9-9:15p address. With a 1.4 A18-49 rating and 4.3 million total viewers, it was up a tenth of a point from last week, but down 13 percent from last year – a finale low.

The week of August 26 was good for for syndicated entertainment magazines, bolstered by interest in Miley Cyrus‘s VMA antics and the Michael Douglas/Catherine Zeta-Jones breakup. Access Hollywood was up 13 percent week to week with a 1.7 rating. Extra bounced up 7 percent, to 1.5, and leader Entertainment Tonight drew 3.4, up 6 percent.

The Arsenio Hall Show dipped its second night, with a 1.5 household rating Tuesday, down from 1.9. The Eye Productions Inc. talker scored .7 A18-49 in Nielsen’s Local People Meters, though, indicating the host is holding his own in the demo against the competition: .1 behind Jay Leno, even with Jimmy Kimmel and ahead of David Letterman and Conan O’Brien (.5).

Talk about hot properties – HGTV racked up series highs for two primetime real estate shows. Property Brothers drew a 1.16 rating W25-54 September 4, while Love It or List It scored a 1.17 rating W25-54 on September 9. Brothers airs Wednesdays at 9p; List It airs Mondays at 9p.
