NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group chairman Bonnie Hammer explained the thinking behind launching Esquire Network on Style, not G4 as planned. “The brand lanes were pretty clear where Bravo lived, where E! is living and where Oxygen has been,” Hammer told the Hollywood Reporter. “Then we looked at Style, and it overlapped with all three.” Moreover, Style was averaging a much lower 79,000 viewers in A18-49. Targeted TV ad specialist Visible World is testing a smart TV app that lets viewers respond to promos by setting on-screen alerts for shows they want to watch. Just before the show starts, the viewer gets a prompt to tune in, no matter what kind of content is being watched (or played). It’s a way for viewers to catch the content they want – and for nets to gauge the effectiveness of their promos.
Target is getting in the digital video game, aiming for a more family-friendly offering than what’s available now. Deals are in place with major studios like Disney and Warner Bros., as well as TV networks, but keeping it simple may be the key: the retailer’s research shows half its customer base has never downloaded or streamed video entertainment.
The Killing is most sincerely dead. AMC canceled the Fox Television Studios drama after season two, then brought it back, but said it won’t invite the show back for a fourth go-round. While the 2011 series premiere drew 2.7 million viewers, the season three finale earned 1.5 million.
