Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/11/08

Good morning, it’s Thursday, September 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a sign that traditional publishing relationships are no longer working, The Star-Ledger of Newark, NJ went to press yesterday carrying no stories from The Associated Press. (Some AP stories can be seen on the paper’s site nj.com, but none referenced to the Star-Ledger.) The move is being seen as either a protest or an honest effort to live without the service as The AP is preparing to introduce a new rate schedule next year that has drawn cancellation notices from a handful of smaller papers across the country. It’s interesting news when taken with yesterday’s announcement from online news site Politico, which introduced a reverse-syndication model that actually pays publishers for running its ad-supported stories.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Verizon Wireless
announced a number of new content deals at the CTIA conference for its V Cast video service. TV episodes on V Cast, which runs $15/month for unlimited use, are presented in segmented clips to make it easier to skip around.

  • Current and classic full length episodes from NBCU properties including NBC (30 Rock, The Office), Telemundo (El Juramento), USA Network (Starter Wife), SCI FI Channel (Ghost Hunters) and NBC Universal Digital Studio (Gemini Division) are now available
  • Discovery launched 4 channels on the service – TLC, Animal Planet, Planet Green and Discovery Kids
  • Comcast’s G4 Network now has its own channel featuring segments from Attack of the Show, X-Play as well as web originals from G4tv.com
  • Scripps’ HGTV and Food Network were also added

Verizon customers downloaded more than 71 million video clips and songs from the service during the first half of 2008.

ABC News is sponsoring five college campus bureaus as part of the network’s ABC News on Campus initiative. The program is a partnership with five top journalism schools across the country to educate and mentor future journalists in multiplatform newsgathering techniques. Multimedia bureaus have been set up on the campuses of Arizona State, Syracuse, Univ. of Florida, Univ. of North Carolina and Univ. of Texas to enable students to produce a wide array of content for ABC News’ various digital and broadcast platforms, including ABCNews.com, ABC News NOW, Good Morning America, World News with Charles Gibson, Nightline, mtvU, ABC News Radio and NewsOne.

Woman’s site SheKnows.com struck a content distribution partnership with Hearst Magazines Digital Media to feature select articles from Hearst sites including Cosmopolitan.com MarieClaire.com, HouseBeautiful.com, Redbookmag.com and GoodHousekeeping.com.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Seth McFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy is up and running with cheeky take offs on $25,000 Pyramid and Super Mario Bros. – the first major programming effort of the Google Content Network. The plan is to freely distribute a total of 50 shorts, each with an animated ad as a pre-roll such as the BK spot in this week, across thousands of websites that match his target demo. Each time someone watches a video on any site, the sponsor pays a fee shared between McFarlane, Google and production partner Media Rights and the site the video is actually seen on. Seth is also guest editor of YouTube this week.

Hollywood producer Rob Fried (Rudy, Collateral) launched SpiritClips, a video greeting card site featuring professionally-produced 3-5 minute shorts that can be purchased for viewing or sharing on an a la carte ($1 each) or subscription basis. The site also invites people to submit their own inspirational stories online, which the SpiritClips team will consider for themes of future SpiritClips films. Watch Sally, starring Nancy Travis as a harried diner waitress, for free – it’s quite well done.

Bebo founder Michael Birch is teaming with TV producer Edward Baker on his next project. Wordia.com, sort of a blending of YouTube and Wikipedia, is described as “the world’s first digital and democratic online video dictionary.” The gentleman sent out invites to the launch party next week, to be held at Dr. Samuel Johnson’s former home at 17 Gough Square in London on the anniversary of the literary giant’s 299th birthday.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

AOL’s online video search engine Truveo launched a video search tool for mobile devices allowing videos to be searched by rank, keyword, popularity or date. Phones supporting Real Time Streaming Protocol can access the service at wap.aol.com/truveo.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

OpenTV Corp. and Adobe Systems Incorporated announced that they have agreed to integrate Adobe Flash Lite software onto OpenTV middleware as an additional application environment. The software layer will be added to further enhancing OpenTV’s Web browsing capabilities and strengthen the development of rich applications and user interfaces.

Out-of-home broadcaster Ecast announced an upgrade of its digital touchscreen jukebox network deployed in 10,000 bars and nightclubs across the U.S. The new Ecast EQ, scheduled to roll out in several cities later this year, features a 40-inch flat panel HD display along with new interactive features powered by LocaModa allowing users to text message or Twitter each other as well as share photos and videos from the console.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Mobile and online media network GoTV Networks announced strategic mobile advertising partnerships with Millennial Media, Digital Sidebar and Ad Infuse. Encouraged by the rise of unlimited data plans, 3G networks and large format 3G handsets, GoTV is preparing to shift from a subscription to an ad supported model. Millennial Media will deliver third-party ads on the company’s mobile Internet sites. Millennial and Ad Infuse will serve third-party video ads within the company’s video programming channels. Digital Sidebar will power alternative advertising technologies to drive discovery, subscription and viewership for the GoTV’s products.

SinglePoint
reached agreements to integrate its mobile ad insertion platform SingleBrand with mobile ad networks Ringleader Digital, JumpTap and 4INFO. Each ad network will be able to access available inventory and insert branded messages directly into SMS/MMS text message campaigns tied to popular game and reality shows that incorporate viewer participation. Current participating programmers include Bravo, NBC Universal, MTV, FOX and The CW.

Barrington Broadcasting
selected Seattle-based local search specialist Marchex to package and sell online lead packages to local businesses in the markets Barrington’s 23 TV stations serve.

Worldwide Smartphones accounted for 25.8% of network traffic in August, up 3.4% since May 2008. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Yahoo named former Microsoft executive Joanne K. Bradford to become its new head of Ad Sales as SVP/U.S. Revenue and Market Development. She reports to Hillary Schneider, EVP of Yahoo’s U.S. operations. Joanne comes to Yahoo after a short stint at Spot Runner in Los Angeles.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Remember back when AOL was a paid dial-up service and a quarter of all U.S. surfers used AOL as their window into the web? Time Warner is making a push to reclaim some of that traffic with the relaunch of AOL.com. Designed to provide users with more flexibility and freedom, the new AOL introduces a slew of social networking integrations and allows visitors to use non-AOL email accounts for the first time. (Giving up control is usually always a good idea.) An automatic personalization feature learns what kind of content you’re interested in from your surfing behavior then pushes stories in that category to you on the home page. Look for another handy function to be rolled out in a few weeks that will enable you to write updates once from the portal that will in turn simultaneously update multiple social networking profiles without having to log on to each one individually. Good stuff – and AOL could really use a boost in the arm. Although it is still the #4 portal, AOL’s ad revenue has suffered as traffic to the site has tapered off in recent years. AOL attracted 111.4 million U.S. uniques in July, according to comScore, down from 113.9 million in July of 2007.
