Raising Hope on FOX became the first freshman show to receive a full-season pick-up as FOX yesterday gave the comedy a back-nine order. Raising Hope will now have a total of 22 episodes.
Bravo launches a second season of The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection on November 9 at 10p. In the new season, 12 professional designers will stage a first-ever fashion house duel where the designers will break into two teams of six to create the ultimate collection. Designer Isaac Mizrahi, fashion supermodel Iman are hosts and judges on the competition series. Harper Bazaar’s Laura Brown will also serve as series judge. Left/Right Productions produces the second season for Bravo.
ABC News struck a deal with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to fund a year-long investigative project probing into worldwide health problems and their solutions. The Gates Foundation is giving ABC News a grant worth $1.5 million and in turn, ABC is supplying $4.5 million for this reporting project which will cover health topics around the world. By accepting the grant, ABC News agreed to include extensive coverage of global health topics and crisis issues on all its programs in addition to a one-hour primetime special airing this December which will kick-off the project and another hour-long special in December 2011 marking the conclusion of the coverage.
Animal Planet made a pact with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to follow their next whale defense campaign in Antarctica as part of a fourth new season of Whale Wars. The new campaign embarks from Australia in December and is expected to carry through February. Season four of Whale Wars will commence in early June produced by The Lizard Trading Company.
Monday’s debut of Parker Spitzer at 8p on CNN, featuring hosts Kathleen Parker and Eliot Spitzer, drew in 454,000 total viewers trailing behind other cable news networks. In the same time period on Monday, FOX News Channel with Bill O’Reilly tallied 3.1 million total viewers; Keith Olbermann on MSNBC pulled in 1.1 million; and Nancy Grace on HLN Channel had 468,000 total viewers.
Writers Guild of America, East issued a new proposal to address the issue that the Comcast/NBCU merger will likely adversely impact the diversity of outlets providing news and public affairs programming. The idea is to increase funding in public affairs TV on public television by requiring the merged entity to devote a share of its resources.
Comcast International Media Group (CIMG) is teaming with AB Group to bring Golf Channel to viewers in France. This marks the first deal for Golf Channel in mainland Europe. AB Group will operate the 24/7 HD channel which will offer coverage and highlights of many live tournaments including European Senior Tour, Asian Tour, Allianz Tour, PGA Grand Slam, US Open, Ryder Cup and British Open in addition to original series such as Golf Central, Live From, The Haney Project among others.
BBC Worldwide’s international preschool channel, CBeebies picked up two shows from DHX Media for its global feeds in 2011. The series are Grandpa In My Pocket (seasons 1-3: 26 eps/11 min, 26 eps/11 min, 13 eps/12 min) to air for the first time in Africa, Asia and Poland; and dirtgirlworld (52 eps/11 min) premiering in Africa and Poland.
August Media Holdings in Singapore inked a deal with animation studio Scrawl Studios based in East Asia. The two entities will develop and co-produce animation projects and Scrawl Studios will act as a service partner for other animation properties. Based on the recently formed production deal with Classic Media the new agreement will involve three animated properties from the Classic Media portfolio led by Red Kite, August Media’s animation team in Edinburgh. The first co-production projects will be George of the Jungle and Mr. Magoo.
Discovery Communications made a raft of deals with European third-party broadcasters totaling 200 hours of content from across Discovery’s roster of networks.
Off The Fence (OTF) made sales equaling more than 500 hours to top African broadcasters.
OTF brought more than 350 hours of new programming to MIPCOM including Slaveship Mutiny (1 ep/60 min), Life Force (6 eps/60 min), Downsized (8 eps/60 min), Excavating Jesus (1 ep/60 min), Firing the Magic Bullet (1 ep/60 min) and Trapper and the Amazon (1 ep/60 min).
Sundance Channel made several international distribution deals including new launches on France’s SFR, the Netherland’s Caiway and South Korea’s KT. In addition, AMC’s Mad Men premieres its first season on Sundance Channel France next February.
Splash News completed a content agreement with MTV International to serve up entertainment content for their new multi-platform format, Celebrity Bites produced by PlayMaker 360. Celebrity Bites with 12 half-hour episodes premiered this week across MTV channels in the UK and more than 150 territories in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Furthermore, Splash News is partnering with Shankly Productions to co-produce Ultimate Hollywood Countdown, a new series that reveals celebrity facts. Thirteen 30m episodes will be available for delivery by next April.
DRG made various sales in Europe and Africa for the factual entertainment series Don’t Tell The Bride, created by Renegade Pictures for BBC Three. The BBC version of the show was picked up by RTL (Netherlands), TV4 (Sweden), Nelonen (Finland), TV2 (Denmark), TV2 (Hungary) and BBC Worldwide Channels which acquired the series for BBC Entertainment in Latin America and BBC Lifestyle in Africa. Additionally, DRG said the format was commissioned by ANT1 TV in Greece and produced by Studio Ata. Don’t Tell The Bride is now being produced locally in seven countries globally.
The Fremantle Corporation is representing the live-action family series A World of Wonders at MIPCOM. The series has 52 30m episodes or 104 15m episodes. The series is beginning production on its fourth season from Genuine Pictures Inc./Genuine World Productions Inc.
And on a personal note … Cannes is a beautiful city. At least my Cannes is – my limited “neighborhood” between various meeting places and my apartment. And it’s amazingly clean with streets swept nightly, trash picked up daily, etc. Of course all that cleanliness comes with a price. Somewhere around 6am each and every morning, the trash on my street is collected from the 3 hotels around my building. The large diesel garbage truck arrives, takes great pains to back up to each of the dumpsters, all the while making the universal “I’m backing up – watch out!” beeping noise trucks make whenever they back up. Then the large unoiled, metal-on-metal screeching arms are hydraulically flipped up and over the truck, lowered, aligned, more beeping, more aligning, until finally the arms find the slots on each side of the dumpster. Those arms, still unoiled by the way, painstakingly slowly lift, tilt, and shake repeatedly the dumpster before its finally lowered again, and the arms slid back out. The process begins anew for each of the five dumpsters on the block. And watching from there perches are the truck’s fan club – a band of marauding seagulls cheering on the process. There is little one could do about the seagulls, but you’d think in a country with such amazing food, wines, fashion, scenery, history … they could come up with a can of WD-40.
WE tv approved a reality show centering on Tammy Pescatelli, a married mom and comedian, reports THR. The docu-series with six one-hour episodes follows Pescatelli who moved away from L.A. where she had a comedy career to raise her family in Meadeville, PA. 2C Media and ITV Studios are producing and Pescatelli will also serve as executive producer. Production will begin in November and WE tv will likely debut the new show in January as part of a new comedy block along with the previously announced reality series helmed by Joan and Melissa Rivers.
Charles Dance landed a role in Syfy’s and Sky Movie HD’s four-hour miniseries, Neverland distributed by RHI Entertainment. Dance will play Dr. Richard Fludd, a 400-year old former alchemist to Queen Elizabeth who has the ability to transport people back to the their own time. Neverland is currently in production in Genoa, Italy and Dublin, Ireland and is scheduled to premiere next year. Parallel Films is producing for MNG Films in association with Syfy and Sky Movies HD.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX remained the top network Wednesday night with a 3.4/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Glee on FOX hit a high note at 8p with a 4.6/13 and CBS’ NCIS was #2 at 3.8/11 and in third was ABC’s No Ordinary Family at 2.7/8. Competition was tight during 9p as CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles won at 3.4/9 though just a tenth of a rating point ahead of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results at 3.3/9. At 10p, CBS was first again with The Good Wife at 2.5/7 followed by NBC’s Parenthood at 2.1/6 and in third was ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 at 1.7/5. Also this hour, TF debuted new telenovela India at 0.6/2.
