Cynopsis: Sports
10/06/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 6, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Networks are officially on NBA cancellation alert, or, as one executive dubbed it, “Hurricane Stern” after failed negotiations between owners and players. With the preseason already scrapped, the league said that if a new collective bargaining agreement wasn’t reached by Monday, the first two weeks of the regular season would be officially cancelled as well. Commissioner David Stern told reporters that a 50/50 split has been proposed (although other reports had slightly different numbers) but no agreement had been reached. This season ESPN is set to run 75 regular-season games with another 15 on ABC, while TNT has slated 52 regular-season games this season.

On the Air

On the plus side for Turner, TBS and TNT’s coverage of the MLB League Division Series on Tuesday featured a four-game slate. Game 4 between the Yankees and Tigers delivered a 4.6 household rating and 7,012,000 total viewers to the company, up 18% and 16% respectively over game three. Those scores are good enough to rank as the most-watched LDS game since 2007. (This will also mark the first time that the Turner networks have had four game fours for the LDS). Game four of the Rays/Rangers drew a 1.7 rating, game three of the Phillies/Cardinals earned a 3.1 and the Brewers/Diamondbacks contest pulled a 1.2 household rating.

Tennis Channel has promoted Bob Whyley to the company’s position of Senior Vice President of Production and Executive Producer. In his new role, Whyley will oversee all aspects of Tennis Channel’s live, first-run and tournament-coverage programming and will be responsible for special-event telecasts during US Open, Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open, Davis Cup and Fed Cup competition and the men’s and women’s year-end championships.

ESPN is bringing back its weekly series BCS Countdown Presented by Allstate on Sunday at 8:15p on flagship ESPN and at 9p on ESPNU. The nine-week show will once again reveal the BCS Standings first each week and will utilize its roster of talent to discuss each team’s position leading up to the final standings. The series will be hosted by Rece Davis.

With a quarter of the NFL season in the can, local ratings are, naturally, seeing the biggest spikes this season in cities with the league’s surprise teams. According to Nielsen, the Oakland Raiders’ local ratings have shot up 40 percent compared to last year at this time  the best in the league  followed by the Detroit Lions (up 17 percent) and Buffalo Bills (up 12 percent).

On a related note, ESPN’s MNF scored a 4.5 rating this week in the 18-49 demo, with 10.84 million viewers.

MLB ON FOX broadcasting staple Tim McCarver won’t be in the booth this weekend when the channel opens ALCS Games due to a medical issue. To fill the void, FOX is turning former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona to join MLB ON FOX lead play-by play announcer Joe Buck for the first two games of the series.

NBC is extending its relationship with Notre Dame, which announced that the school is leaving the Central Collegiate Hockey Association for Hockey East beginning with the 2013/14 season. The deal will place home hockey games for the university on what will become NBC Sports Network.

As expected, DIRECTV has officially announced that the company will air new sports talk series the “Nick and Artie Show,” on the Audience Network. DIRECTV will produce the series, which will be distributed on the radio through Premiere Networks and feature comedians Artie Lange and Nick DiPaolo on the radio where they discuss the day’s topics.

FUEL TV has tapped the four industry experts to its new series Action Sports Plus, TransWorld Surf Magazine Editor-In-Chief Chris Cote, skate company owner/pro skater Chris Pastras, motocross champion Jeff Emig and Superpipe snowboard champion Keir Dillon to the program where they will analyze different topics each week, from the worlds of surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross, BMX, wakeboarding and MMA.

NFL Network is set to look at one of its own with the upcoming episode of A Football Life tonight. The show, Kurt Warner: A Football Life, will air at 10p and chronicle Warner’s football journey.

Respected sports director Joseph R. Aceti, who won the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Direction in 2006, has passed. Aceti had worked for all four of the major networks with a resume that included the 1968, 72, 76, 80, and 92 Olympic Games as well as multiple World Series, the US Open, the NBA, NFL and more.

Sponsorship & Promotion

State Farm has signed on to serve as the title sponsor for the first-ever Champions Classic on ESPN in a one-year deal. The State Farm Champions Classic will tip off on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York and feature Duke facing Michigan State while Kentucky takes on Kansas. Associate Sponsors of the event include Gildan, DirecTV and CARFAX.

The NFL is opening the doors to the famed Super Bowl Media Day. The league announced that, for the first time, fans will be allowed to join in on the fun which will take place on Tuesday, January 31, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Fans who nab tickets will be able to sit in the stands and watch the media interview players on the two Super Bowl teams on the field. Every fan will have a radio receiver that allows them to hear the audio of that day’s coverage from NFL Network.

Digital Fields

NASCAR.com reports that the site’s Superstore showed that Sept. 2011 sales were up 31% over the same month in 2010, and were bolstered by Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualifying for the Chase as well as Jeff Gordon’s 85th career win. In addition, the site recently won a 2011 Adobe MAX Award for RaceView in the Entertainment category at the Max Award ceremony.

UniversalSports.com is set to feature eight rugby heavyweights online during the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup Quarterfinals where the site will stream live coverage of all four matches. The first match will take place on Sat., October 8 with Ireland vs. Wales at 12:45a and fans will be able to watch as part of the channel’s online subscription package.

NFL.com is adding condensed game replays to its online portfolio, with half hour versions of games that will include every play from the field. Games will be offered through the site’s Game Rewind online package, which costs about $30 per season.

The Main Event

There’s the Tigers/Yankees game five at 8p on TBS, but don’t forget the start of hockey season as well when Versus features a doubleheader with the Boston Bruins hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at 7p, followed by the Canucks hosting the Penguins at 10p.
