Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. the TV ratings pioneer and Chairman of the A.C. Nielsen Company died on Monday at the age of 92. Mr. Nielsen’s father founded the company in 1923 and invented the ratings system though the younger Mr. Nielsen was the driving force that made Nielsen a household name. Mr. Nielsen joined the company in 1945 following his service in World War II. After witnessing the importance of computer technology during the war, he convinced his father to invest in building the first general-purpose computer, the Univac. This spirit of innovation and enterprise helped him grow the company’s income from under $4 million per year when he was named President in 1957 to more than $680 million under his watch. Mr. Nielsen retired from his company in 1983 and following in 1984 the company was acquired by Dun & Bradstreet Company. D&B split Nielsen into two separate companies in 1996, Nielsen Media Research encompassing TV ratings and AC Nielsen, specializing in consumer shopping trends and box-office data. The Dutch publishing company, VNU acquired Nielsen Media Research in 1999 and re-combined the two entities when it bought AC Nielsen in 2001.

CYN‘s MIPCOM 2011 – Life Lessons: Today I learned two life lessons, and as any lesson, these are not easily accepted and always humbling. Here you have it — I had a 1030a appt with a publicist I had never met, and wasn’t sure who her client was. I didn’t have an email contact for her, or a phone, only a time and her name. No location. As the time drew closer and closer, no word from her and I made the rookie error to think perhaps this meeting had been cancelled. So I’m at the apartment working, getting ready for the day, when an email from her arrives at 1032 saying, this is where I and my client are, and can’t wait to see you. Omg! I’m not dressed to see anyone, dripping wet hair from the shower. I tell her I’ll be there in 20 minutes, and fly out the door. I arrive in about 18 minutes, obviously very late. And I’m never late. No really, never ever late! I rather expected and no doubt deserved an earful from the client and publicist, and a meeting that would last maybe five minutes. Instead I was greeted with such grace from the client who never made a mention of my extreme tardiness. I attempted to apologize, but he would hear nothing of it, he just delighted I was able to make it. And then he gave me a beautifully wrapped gift — not a DVD, a hat, or a t-shirt, but a proper, bonafide, non-TV-related gift. We sat and talked for the next half hour and without a doubt he was the nicest man I’ve met with this whole market. I won’t tell you his name – it may embarrass him. And I won’t tell you the gift – it’s not relevant, except to say he described it as the “perfect bland of England and France, all in one box.” And the lessons? #1 – Don’t be too quick to discount a scheduled event and it’s importance to others; and #2 – Graciousness – even to someone who has so obviously inconvenienced you – is the epitome of good decent behavior and something I can certainly adopt.
Univision Communications made a multi-year content deal with Hulu which involves hundreds of hours of Spanish-language novelas, variety shows, comedies and reality series from the Univision networks to Hulu and to Hulu Plus. Apparent Gravity Media, specializing in sports events and series distribution, holds the global multi-platform distribution rights to MMA:30 and will be representing the series to the international marketplace at Sportel on October 10. MMA:30 is a half-hour hi-def series with 26 episodes. The programming package also includes two annual one-hour specials, The World MMA Awards and The Final Knockout.
Outdoor Channel is now offered through the Digital Preferred tier throughout New England via Comcast. XFINITY customers in Greater Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts; Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Burlington, Vermont will have access to Outdoor Channel’s hunting, fishing, shooting and adventure programming.
UK’s Horror Channel acquired a package of eight Video Nasties films acquired through various deals negotiated with Nucleus Films, Sony Columbia, Arrow Films and MPI Media. The film titles, all of which were either originally banned in the UK or released with major censorship, include the UK premiere of The Exterminator as well as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and will be broadcast as the Season of the Banned beginning November 4. Horror Channel will air the films uncut.

- The first is an hour-long drama set in the White House from Jon Favreau, Roberto Orci, Seth Green and Michael Dougherty called Secret Cabinet. ABC gave the drama procedural a put pilot commitment about a newly-elected president and his “secret Cabinet” comprised of the government’s most brilliant minds who work covertly to protect the nation from strange events and conspiracies. Favreau will write and direct; Orci, Green and Dougherty will also write and serve as executive producers. K/O Paper Productions and 20th Century Television are producing.
- Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, along with the couple’s business partner James Lassiter sold a multi-camera comedy project to ABC. The Untitled Romeo Project will star singer Anthony “Romeo” Santos and will be produced by ABC Studios and their Overbrook Entertainment company. The project is about a charismatic Dominican-American (Romeo) from Washington Heights who tries to please his traditional immigrant father while also creating a new life for himself while seeking the American Dream. Chris Pappas and Mike Bernier are set to write and serve as executive producers; the Smiths and Lassiter are on board as non-writing executive producers.
The Perry Mason franchise will be made into a feature film produced by Warner Bros. and Team Downey and Robert Downey Jr. is considering the title role as the iconic defense attorney which was played by Raymond Burr in the CBS television series that ran from 1957 to 1966. The film will be set in the early 1930s Los Angeles similar to the original book series by Erle Stanley Gardner. Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will produce along with Robert Cort; executive producers on the project will include David Gambino, Eric Hetzel, Joe Horacek, Susan Feiles and Chris Darling.
