Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 5, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Nickelodeon has launched TurboNick 2.0, a new updated version of its broadband video platform. Among the new features on TurboNick 2.0 are continuous video streaming, customized play lists, content offered in multiple languages, and visitors can now search the Nickelodeon content library (short and long form). Which means that kids can program their own content line-up; everyone’s a programmer! Kids can also use the mash-up applications, rate videos/games. The initial TurboNick site launched in July 2005. Since its soft launch on September 20, TurboNick 2.0 has generated 19 million content streams, an increase of +911% vs. the equivalent period of time last year’s, and is averaging 236,000 daily unique visitors. TurboNick 2.0 is also scheduled to rollout in international territories including Germany, Italy and the UK in late 2006/early 2007.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
3 Roads Communications, Inc. has begun production on 100 Tips for Child Safety, a new series of 30 second interstitials for public television. Targeted to parents of kids of all ages, the topics include school bus safety and keeping teens away from drugs/alcohol. Distributed by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), 100 Tips for Child Safety is underwritten by Defywire, Inc., a wireless software provider. ( www.100tips.tv )

KOL, Kids AOL, has signed its first international TV deal, which will see its original animated series Princess Natasha airing in Australia and New Zealand. Under a three-year deal with ABC Australia, 40 episodes of Princess Natasha will air on ABC Kids’ tween/teen targeted interactive Roller Coaster programming block. Licensing opportunities in both Australia and New Zealand are currently being looked at by Gaffney International Licensing, the new licensing agent for the property.
Decode Entertainment has inked a raft of sales for its series to broadcasters in Latin America. Mexico’s Canal Once has snapped up Planet Sketch, which Decode co-produces with Aardman Animations, and the short-form series Naughty Naughty Pets. In Venezuela, local distributor Amazonia has picked up the rights to Franny’s Feet, The Save-Ums! and GirlStuff BoyStuff. Boomerang has picked up the live-action teen comedy/drama Radio Free Roscoe.
Toronto-based marblemedia distribution sold the first season of This is Emily Yeung to the U.S.’s Disney Channel. The network will place the This is Daniel Cook live action spinoff show in its Playhouse Disney preschool programming block according to World Screen. Emily takes preschoolers along with her as she and her special guests discover and create.
Circle Back Music has launched an initiative for music fans to raise money and give back to the community at the same time. Folks who visit the Circle Back website and purchase and download music from the site will also be asked to vote for which non-profit receives 10% of their purchase plus a portion of Circle Black’s future profits. The participating groups are Axis of Justice, FINCA International; Honor the Earth, Sweatshop Watch, Women for Women International, and Worth Our Weight. Genius Products is set to bow its new line of BKN International’s animated action/adventure Legend of the Dragon DVDs this month, following the series debut on Disney/Jetix. The first DVD will include the first four completed episodes of the series and is slated for release on October 23, 2006. Legend of the Dragon is a BKN Production, produced and created by Rick Ungar and written by Sean Catherine Derek.
October + Halloween = Scooby-Doo, those meddling kids and a bunch of relatives they should never have gone to visit. To mark the frightful holiday, Warner Bros. Advanced Digital Services newly launched Scooby-Doo.com is in the midst of its month-long Halloween promotion that includes several Scooby-Doo Mystery Podcasts that feature some scary tales (6-8 minutes long), lots of themed games and downloads (screensavers, wallpapers, icons), a sweepstakes, and come the 31st, a virtual trick or treat bag and surprises. The first of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Podcasts, Metal Monster, will bow October 16 and finds Scooby and Shaggy … well lets just say – deep sea fishing, Gulf of Mexico, storm, stranded, ghost ship. The website will also feature Rowling Ralloween Costume Contest, a sweepstakes sponsored by Del Monte Foods, where kids are asked to send in pictures of themselves in costume, with the winner chosen by visitors to the site. As the calendar turns, we once again find ourselves in October, when Toy Wishes magazine traditionally unveils its Hot Dozen list of toys for upcoming holiday season, at its annual Toy Wishes Holiday Preview held in NYC. Marvel Entertainment, Inc. has tapped Simon Philips as its new President, Marvel International. Philips, who officially joins the company on November 13, will oversee the company’s international consumer products group and develop licensing campaigns for both its movie events and its core classic comic book characters. He will report directly to Marvel’s newly established Office of the Chief Executive. Philips was most recently Managing Director, 4Kids Entertainment International. Previously, he was Founder/CEO, Licensing Dynamics International and he was responsible for the International Licensing for the 1994 Winter Olympics as well as a Licensing Manager at British Olympic Licensing Ltd. Phillips recently served on the Board of Directors of the Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association.
Rob Weisstuch has been appointed SVP, Chief Information Officer, HIT Entertainment. Based in NY, Weisstuch will oversee all global Information Technology functions and head the company’s strategic development of new technology business models to improve/develop customer interaction. He will also be responsible for the design and delivery of information technology infrastructure and applications. He will report to Patricia Wyatt, President, North America. A 20+ year veteran of the IT and Operations industry, Weisstuch was most recently COO and Chief Information Officer, Riot Media, Inc. Previously, he spent 18 years with Accenture, where he last served as Partner/Media and Entertainment Practice.
