Reality TV is the new comfort food, reports TruthCo. Based on research for its just-released seventh “Truth Culture Decoder: Reinventing Reality” edition, the brand consultant says reality TV has moved from “exploitative freak shows” to a more conservative phase defined by family bonds. “Duck Dynasty rules as a kind of Waltons-style family show,” says TruthCo. president Linda Ong, “assuring viewers family is the only institution we can trust.”

~ IN THE NEWS ~

CBS got the biggest haul at the 34th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards Tuesday night with 12 trophies, six of which went to the net’s 60 Minutes. PBS won nine awards, HBO took home six, CNN had three, National Geographic Channel and NBC each earned two. ABC nabbed one.

Take that, Twitter: This week, Facebook started providing data to the major networks about actions on its site, including likes, comments and shares about television episodes, to try and attract more TV advertisers. Data is collected anonymously and shown in aggregate to protect users’ privacy.

Wilfred was renewed for a fourth season, moving from FX to younger-skewing FXX for a final ten episodes in 2014. According to Variety, FX president John Landgraf wanted to give the show enough notice to tie up storylines.

A Director’s Guild of America report released yesterday said almost three quarters of primetime TV directors in the 2012-13 season were Caucasian males. Caucasian females accounted for 12 percent of the group, minority males 13 percent and minority females 2 percent – down from 4 percent the year before.

ABC has renewed summer series Motive. The Bell Media crime drama ended its first season on August 29.

Outdoor Channel is prepping for hunting season with its “Gear Up and Go” sweepstakes, in partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods. Prizes include trips and apparel and accessories from Outdoor advertisers. Dick’s is also the sponsor for the net’s 4Q Friday night programming block.

Travel and lifestyle series Raw Travel will debut in almost 78 million homes this weekend, October 5 and 6, announced producer/distributor AIM TV. The half hour weekly show “illustrates the raw and often unglamorous reality of independent travel.”

Bravo‘s Top Chef has four on-screen integrated sponsors for season eleven: Toyota is returning, joined now by Kraft Foods, Chase Sapphire Preferred and Cigna. Integration elements include viewers voting on the best dish made with Kraft cream cheese, and Chase cardholders being given the opportunity to redeem points to attend the Top Chef Restaurant Wars episode. Series airs Wednesdays at 10p.

With SAG-AFTRA TV and theatrical contracts set to expire June 30, 2014, the union announced it will begin working on proposals for negotiations with studios and networks on January 27, 2014.

NBC has canceled summer series Camp. The September 11 finale drew 3.2 million viewers.

~ CASTING ~

Bob Newhart will reprise his Emmy-winning role, Professor Proton, on CBS‘s The Big Bang Theory. Bill “The Science Guy” Nye, who just exited ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars, is along for the ride, playing Proton’s rival. Episode airs Thursday, November 7 at 8p.

Amber Tamblyn‘s five-ep arc on CBS’s Two and a Half Men has turned into a regular gig, reports Deadline. Season eleven of the sitcom airs Thursdays at 9:30p.

David Tennant (Dr. Who) has been cast Detective Inspector Alec Hardy in the Fox event series adaptation of Broadchurch. Tennant also played the role in season one of BBC America‘s hit U.K. version (casting for season two hasn’t been announced). Tennant will use an American accent for the U.S. version, expected to air during the 2014-2015 season.

Julie White (Go On) will have a major recurring role on season six of Showtime‘s Nurse Jackie. White will play an AA sponsor for Jackie (Edie Falco) when the series returns in 2014.

David Harewood (Homeland) has been cast in HBO pilot, The Money, about a powerful media mogul, says the Hollywood Reporter.

One of the first out of the gate will be interactive format Rising Star, a live talent show incorporating real-time voting by viewers via an app fully integrated into the show. The competition broke records in Israel this week on Keshet Channel 2, with a 49.4 percent HH share.

SNL alum Will Forte snagged a pilot production commitment from Fox for The Last Man On Earth. The sitcom, from Lord Miller, is about two strangers who have to get along to save the human race.

~ DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE ~

Turner Broadcasting System and Verizon announced a long-term distribution agreement Wednesday, giving FiOS TV’s five million-plus subscribers on-demand programming and live streaming of all major Turner networks, with easier access to authenticated content.

Entertainment One acquired U.S. and international distribution rights for to travel-focused reality shows from Buck Productions. Project Guatemala follows spoiled young adults who think they’re headed for a luxury vacation but end up volunteering in a poverty-stricken area instead. Our Family Vacation tracks two family trips, including canceled flights and out-of-control parties, shot entirely by the families themselves.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

BBC America is planning a global simulcast to celebrate Dr. Who’s 50th anniversary on November 23. The Day of the Doctor will be broadcast simultaneously to millions of viewers in countries including Canada, Brazil and the U.K.

~ SYNDICATION ~

Courtroom series Paternity Court increased 60 percent an A25-54 over its premiere week, “largely due to strong social media and word of mouth,” says John Bryan, President, Domestic Television Distribution for MGM Television. What makes it stand out from the court show crowd? “Watching that level of emotion is appealing and contagious,” Bryan tells Cynopsis.

~ RATINGS ~

The guys have it: Excluding its smash debut, week 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delivered ABC‘s highest A18-49 rating (3.3/10) for Tuesday 8-9p in two years, and ranked as Tuesday’s top show in all key male demos. Still, the show was down about a third from its premiere. The entire lineup saw double-digit dips, with freshman series Lucky 7 plummeting to a .7/2 in the demo.

S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn’t fend off CBS‘s NCIS, which notched 3.5/11 in the Nielsens and an evening-high 20 million viewers for the final appearance of popular cast member Cote de Pablo.

NBC was the only net on Tuesday to skirt big rating declines. Both two-hour The Voice (4.5/13) and newbie Chicago Fire (2.6/8) held steady.

CNN‘s New Day is looking brighter. After a bumpy start, the morning news show, launched in June, grew 29 percent in total viewers year-to-year, to 303,000, and 15 percent in A25-54, to 107,000.
