Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 31, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBCUniversal is pulling the trigger on its big event strategy to drive tune-in for this weekend’s coverage of The Breeders’ Cup. The activation will include live Breeders’ Cup bonus coverage that will air during NBCSN’s 3p Notre Dame/Navy pregame show. Promotion will include segments on Today, Access Hollywood, The Weather Channel, E!, regional networks and in-park promotions at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk in LA. Live NBC Sports Group coverage of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships begins on Friday, November 1, from 4-8p on NBCSN, and wraps up Saturday at 8p on NBC.

On the Air

Turner’s NBA on TNT Opening Night 2013 featuring the Heat and Bulls on Tuesday averaged a 3.3 household rating and 5.4 million total viewers to become the second highest-rated and most-viewed opening night game in network history. TNT’s second game of the doubleheader between the Clippers and Lakers averaged a 2.4 score and 3.6 million total viewers.

NBC Sports Group is on a high, announcing that because of Sunday Night Football, the opening of the NHL season, Premier League and MLS matches, Formula One and IndyCar racing, as well as golf’s Presidents Cup, its platforms posted large year-to-year viewership increases in October. NBCSN and Golf Channel increased October total day viewership by 116% and 75% respectively, according to Nielsen. Golf Channel’s average total day viewership of 84,000 marked its best-ever for October. NBCSN’s primetime viewership rose 183% from October 2012 to October 2013. Finally, NBC’s Sunday Night Football posted its best October ever with an average of 21.5 million viewers, up 17% over last year and a 12.6 household rating (up 14%).

Around the dial., Univision Deportes Network will now have ratings publicly reported by Nielsen and kicked off the data play by announcing that the network ranked as the top Spanish-language cable sports network in the third quarter in primetime and total day in the past quarter. Led by LigaMX, the network in primetime averaged 83,000 P2+ and 52,000 among Adults 18-49.

FOX Deportes’ coverage of Game 5 of the World Series scored as the Spanish Sports program for the day, according to Nielsen, delivering a 2.40 household rating with 262,000 total viewers and 175,000 among persons 18-49.

Former Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin will join NBC Olympics for its Winter Games coverage in Sochi, Russia She is set to serve as a reporter for NBC Olympics’ multi-platform coverage and will present daily features for The Olympic Zone, NBC Olympics’ 30-minute daily show for NBC affiliates covering all aspects of the Games.

BTN announced multiple programming initiatives including its first feature-length documentary Tiebreaker that will air at 7p on Nov. 16. The special will look at the aftermath of the 1973 Ohio State/Michigan football game that ended in a 10-10 tie. With both teams sporting identical 7-0-1 conference records, Big Ten Athletic Directors were left to vote on which school would represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. In addition the network revealed plans for 2013-14 wrestling coverage, presented by returning sponsor Cliff Keen Athletic. The television schedule includes a dual between Penn State and Iowa, winners of the past six national titles, a Monday night meet in primetime between Ohio State and Purdue, and live coverage of the entire Big Ten Wrestling Championships hosted by Wisconsin. Additionally, a record 48 events will be streamed live on the Big Ten Digital Network.

ESPN offers up the 2013 World Series of Poker: Main Event Final Table virtually live (on a 15 minute delay) starting Monday at 8p on ESPN2. The final contenders will continue play on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 9p p.m. on ESPN until a WSOP Champion is crowned. Commentator Lon McEachern leads microphone duties, with analyst Norman Chad and poker pro Antonio Esfandiari.

NBC Sports Group and the NHL are bringing in Hollywood director Bobby Farrelly for its multi-platform marketing campaign to promote the 2013 NHL Thanksgiving Showdown between the Rangers and Bruins on Friday, November 29 at 1p on NBC. The campaign debuted during last night’s Wednesday Night Rivalry broadcast and features family relatives from Boston and New York carrying their personal Bruins-Rangers rivalry to Thanksgiving dinner. The TV campaign was shot in Boston, and features NHL stars Cam Neely and Mike Richter. In additional promotion for this game, Neely, Richter and a musical performer will ride aboard the Discover/NHL Frozen Fall Fun float at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, Nov. 28.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is backing the U.S. Ski Team, U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing via a deal that will make the brand the Official Tire of the teams. “Winter driving and overcoming tough conditions is something our Teams face every season, and performance is a must for athletic success,” said USSA Chief Marketing Officer Michael Jaquet. “Goodyear’s commitment to our programs and athletes is a huge step for us and will provide an opportunity to showcase its products through our USSA events and athletes.”

Norwegian Cruise Line and the New York Knicks entered a new marketing partnership that makes Norwegian the Official Cruise Line of the team. Norwegian will be featured on the Knicks digital platforms and in-arena during the team’s home games at the overhauled Madison Square Garden.

Digital & Technology

The NBA’s signature app, NBA Game Time, was completely redesigned for the new season and expanded its number of platforms for the 2013-14 season. The new-look NBA Game Time will offer enhanced navigation and more robust content features, including game recaps and video highlights for every game, enriched player and team stats, and in-depth team roster information.
