Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 31, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
NatGeo: Meltdown at 10p
Sundance Channel: The Returned at 9p

Tonight’s Finales:
Cooking Channel: Chuck’s Eat the Street at 10p

NBC is launching The People Magazine Awards with Dick Clark Productions, celebrating pop culture newsmakers and personalities. “People magazine is the most influential celebrity and entertainment news vehicle in America,” said DCP CEO Allen Shapiro, “making them the perfect partner for us to create a year-end awards show recognizing the year’s best and most talked-about people.”

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Oscar ads went for close to $1.9 million for a 30-second spot, reports Variety – and they’re sold out. The previous high was $1.82 million in 2008. Live events with big ratings have become increasingly precious to advertisers, not just because of the audience they deliver (this year’s awards drew an average 40.3 million viewers), but because ads can’t be skipped in real time, and robust social media activity provides more marketing opportunities. Ellen Degeneres, who hosted in 2007, will return for next year’s ABC telecast on Sunday, March 2.

Beginning tonight, PBS is airing 1998 documentary, Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart, about the music legend who died October 27 at age 71. The film will air on PBS stations, including the WORLD channel, through November 7.

National Journal‘s “Next America” project, aimed at exploring the nation’s changing demographic, has partnered with new milliennial-focused net Fusion to produce news for a more ethnically diverse America, “and understand how two of the largest demographic waves since the baby boom – millennials and Hispanics – are impacting so many sectors of society today,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee.

Ashton Kutcher (Two and a Half Men) will moonlight as a product engineer/celebrity pitchman for Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo Group‘s Yoga line of tablets. The partnership “brings together my love of technology and design that makes your life better” said the star of biopic Jobs.

Caroline Manzo may be gone from Bravo hit Real Housewives of New Jersey, but her sister-in-law Dina is back in. “Yes I’m back,” said a Tuesday tweet from Dina Manzo, who left the reality show during its second season, “See you on Bravo my friends.” Season six premieres in 2014.

There’s no escaping Ron Burgundy. The San Diego anchorman, played by Will Ferrell in 2004’s The Anchorman and currently spokesman for Chrysler’s Dodge Durango, will be a guest star on TBS talker Conan on Thursday, November 21 to pitch “his” new upcoming book, “Let Me Off at the Top!: My Classy Life and Other Musings” – and, undoubtedly, the new film, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, bowing December 20.

~ COMING UP ~

New ID series Elder Skelter tells the real-life stories of senior citizens who committed heinous crimes. “Elder Skelter is like watching the Golden Girls with age rage,” said Group President of ID, Destination America and Military Channel Henry Schlieff of the Hot Snakes Media production, premiering Wednesday, November 6 at 10p.

VH1 rock doc The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop explores the music genre as a cultural movement, offering a visual history of its influence on music, film, television, fashion and politics. The four-part series debuts in February, 2014.

A&E heads into cowboy territory with Rodeo Girls, about female barrel racers. Produced by Weinstein Company and Left/Right, the six-episode docu-series premieres Sunday, December 15 at 10p.

PBS announced that the roster of music artists in its upcoming documentary, Nashville 2.0: The Rise of Americana, includes Dwight Yoakam, Roseanne Cash, The Mavericks and Jerry Douglas, among other luminaries. The show kicks off the net’s Americana Music Weekend on Friday, November 22 at 9p.

Sarah Silverman, who posted her failed NBC pilot, Susan 313, on YouTube last week, has a stand-up comedy special coming up on HBO. Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles debuts Saturday, November 23 at 10p.

PBS goes out of this world with a primetime slate of shows devoted to the cosmos. Two one-hour Nova programs, At the Edge of Space and Asteroid: Doomsday or Payday? are joined by special Comet Encounter on Wednesday, November 20 at 8p.

Oprah: Where Are They Now? answers the question about Michael Bolton, Jon Gosselin, Soleil Moon Frye and Lynda Carter in new OWN interviews Sunday, November 3 at 10p.

~ RETURNING SHOWS ~

Comedy Central announced the renewals of three series. Coming back for season three is Brickleberry, about a motley crew of park rangers. In the midst of its second season, the animated comedy is averaging 1.6 million viewers in its Tuesday, 10:30p time slot. Sketch comedy Key & Peele, averaging 1.9 million viewers on Wednesdays at 10:30p, earned a fourth go-round, and Drunk History, having sucked in 1.2 million viewers by sharing inebriated versions of historical events in its freshman season, will be back for season two.

TLC promises vengeance, lies and “one of the most outrageous and violent brawls in reality television history” when Gypsy Sisters returns for a second season. A two-hour premiere of the Firecracker Films production airs Thursday, December 5 at 9p.

ASPiRE network has renewed The Root 100 for a sophomore season, reports The Wrap. The series, offering in-depth looks at influential African-Americans, returns Wednesday, November 27 at 8p.

~ SYNDICATION ~

Host Steve Harvey finds himself between TLC‘s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Cake Boss clans when the families duke it out for charity on Family Feud. The game show ep airs Monday, November 11.

~ DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE ~

Spike TV and Open Road Films struck a deal for first window premieres of movies including past releases The Grey and End of Watch, and upcoming films including Sabotage and Chef. First up: Killer Elite on Monday, November 11 at 5p.

TNT has given a pilot order to Public Morals, which Ed Burns will write, produce and direct. Oh, and he’ll star in it, too. ~ RATINGS ~

Thanks to the World Series, Fox posted its first weekly win of the season in A18-49, with a 3.3 rating/10 share for the week of October 21. NBC came in second, with 2.4/7. Fox also came out on top in total viewers, drawing 11.35 million.

While NBC‘s The Voice (3.6/10) and The Biggest Loser (1.8/5) and CBS‘s Person of Interest (1.9/5) took dips in the A18-49 demo Tuesday night, ABC‘s teetering Trophy Wife saw a nice 17 percent ratings bounce, to 1.4/4. As for that low Voice – the singing competition’s two-hour knockout round still knocked out the competition in the demo, including Fox‘s The X Factor, which scored its lowest rating (1.5/4) this season in a week scrambled by the World Series.

Telemundo had its best-ever October among total viewers, delivering 1.2 million, and saw a 5 percent lift over last year in prime time in A18-49 (619,000 versus 593,000).

Velocity was another winner, boasting its best October ever in primetime. Versus last year, the net was up 26 percent in Households, up 14 percent in M25-54 and up 5 percent in M18-49. “This month’s success is especially gratifying on the heels of our two year anniversary,” Robert Scanlon, Velocity GM, tells Cynopsis. “We are the first network targeting the upscale male audience, and clearly, it’s been an overwhelming success. We look forward to breaking this record many times over.”
