Retired President/CEO of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., Daniel B. Burke died on Wednesday at his home in Rye, NY.  He was 82.  Mr. Burke served as President/CEO from 1990 until his retirement in 1994 and before that was President/COO of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. since 1972.  As a distinguished media industry leader, Mr. Burke spent more than 30 years at Capital Cities starting in 1961 as GM of WTEN/Albany.  He was elected as VP of Capital Cities in 1962 and in 1964 became GM of WJR-AM/FM in Detroit.  Mr. Burke later was appointed EVP/Director of Capital Cities in 1967 and a short time after was named President of the Publishing Division from 1969 to 1972.  Mr. Burke and his long-time friend and business partner Tom Murphy became nationally well-known after Capital Cities acquired the American Broadcasting Companies (ABC) in January 1986.  At the time, the deal was the largest non-oil merger in business history.  Two years following Mr. Burke’s retirement, Capital Cities/ABC was sold to The Walt Disney Company.  Many civic achievements and activities comprised Mr. Burke’s career including serving as Director of The Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Chairman Emeritus of New York Presbyterian Hospital (now Columbia Presbyterian).  In 1990, President George H.W. Bush named Mr. Burke to the Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund and he additionally served on the board of directors for several organizations and companies including his alma mater, the University of Vermont, The National Urban League and Morgan Stanley Group, Inc. among others.  Following his retirement, Mr. Burke established a minor league baseball franchise, the Sea Dogs in Portland, ME.  Mr. Burke is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet “Bunny” Burke, four children and fourteen grandchildren.  A visitation service will be held at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye, NY on October 30 from 3p to 7p and the funeral will be at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk, ME on November 1 at 11a.  Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Maine Medical Center, The Partnership for a Drug-Free America or the Naomie Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center.

~ MORE STUFF ~

Midseason drama Awake for NBC has temporarily halted production on further episodes.  Production will stop after principal photography is completed on the fifth episode this Friday.  A four-week break will ensue to allow the writers to work on scripts before production resumes on episode six November 28.  Awake stars Jason Isaacs as Detective Michael Britten who discovers he is living in dual worlds, one where his son is dead and the other where his wife is no longer living.  Produced by 20th Television, Awake also co-stars Laura Allen, Wilmer Valderrama, Steve Harris, Michaela McManus and Dylan Minnette.

Soon after its series launch, Showtime granted a second season renewal for Homeland with 12 new one-hour episodes.  Starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, Homeland’s premiere ranks as the highest-rated freshman drama series launch ever for Showtime with 4.4 million viewers across various platforms during its inaugural week. Subsequent episodes have increased in viewership with this last Sunday’s airing posting the series’ best ratings so far.  Homeland, produced by FOX 21, will begin production on season two in spring 2012.

E! announced a handful of new programming initiatives and dates of new and returning series that will kick off in late November:

  • Beginning November 27, E! launches an expanded programming initiative under the umbrella: Go Big and Stay Home!  The programming effort opens with the season premiere of Kourtney & Kim Take New York at 10p sporting new one-hour episodes.
  • Also on November 27 at 11p, a new season of After Lately opens giving viewers an inside peek of the people and guests who make up the late night talk show Chelsea Lately.
  • New docu- series Scouted debuts November 28 at 10p with eight episodes.
  • The network’s comedy series The Soup moves to a new night and time starting November 30 at 10p.

Reality series The Buried Life was canceled by MTV after airing two seasons, reports EW.  The show followed four friends as they traveled the country helping strangers achieve their dreams while crossing off ambitious and sometime sweet activities off their personal bucket lists.  MTV will apparently maintain a working relationship with the team in a different capacity.

A new season of Fatal Attractions bows on Animal Planet November 11 at 9p.  Over six episodes, the series relates real-life stories of people who live with animals that could kill them such as wild cats, chimps, poisonous snakes and alligators.

On the heels of airing its frosh season finale, FEARnet is re-upping its supernatural comedy series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil for a second season.  Jason Mewes stars in the series about a small town high school guy trying to save the world.  FEARnet will bring back the second season next March and will continue to air it during the Twisted Comedy Block on Tuesday nights paired with the network’s first original production, Holliston.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Disney/ABC Television Group and Corus Entertainment forged a licensing deal to launch the 24-hour channel brand, ABC Spark in Canada next spring.  ABC Spark is a dedicated millennial-focused channel and multi-platform offering similar to ABC Family in the US.  ABC Spark will target young adults with ABC Family’s programming such as the series Switched at Birth, The Lying Game and Secret Life of the American Teenager.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC is completing a deal to acquire two projects from Marta Kauffman, co-creator of Friends based on international formats:

  • Red Band Society, produced by DreamWorks Television and ABC Studios is based on the Spanish format Polseres Vermelles about six teens who are patients in the children’s wing of a big city hospital.  Kauffman will write and serve as showrunner.   DreamWorks’ Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will be executive producers with Kauffman and Sergio Aguero. In addition, Carlos and Julio Fernandez of Filmax will serve as co-executive producers.
  • The Avalon is a one-hour comedy/drama project produced by Ben Silverman’s Electus and ABC Studios.  The Avalon is based on the Pan Asian format, The Kitchen Musical and will be a musical set at a restaurant.  Kauffman is attached to write along with Jessica Queller.  Last August, Electus said it was partnering with Asia’s The Group Entertainment and Small World IFT to bring The Kitchen Musical format to the US.  The format is launching this fall in 18 Asian countries.  The Group’s Tim Crescenti, Nelia Molato-Sustrino and Chris James will executive produce ABC’s version along with Silverman, Kauffman and Queller.  The comedy script, Ben Fox Is My Manny was picked up by FOX from creator Dana Fox.  The network purchased the single-camera pilot from 20th Century Fox with penalty attached.  The project is about a single mom’s slacker brother who moves in to help her raise her baby.  Fox will be an executive producer with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope

FOX’s Glee welcomes back Jonathan Groff to the series later this season for multiple episodes.  Groff will reprise his character, Jesse St. James though in a new way as a teacher.
