Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Two-time Olympic athlete Johnny Weir is trading in in his skates for a microphone, with NBC Olympics announcing that Weir will join 1998 Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski, and 2006 ice dance silver medalist Tanith Belbin for its Winter Games coverage in Sochi, Russia. Weir, who formally announced his retirement from the sport yesterday, and Lipinski will serve as analysts, while Weir will serve as a reporter for NBC Olympics’ Sports Desk and will present features for The Olympic Zone, NBC Olympics’ 30-minute daily show for NBC affiliates covering all aspects of the Games.

Weir and Lipinski will appear on NBC this Sunday at 4p alongside Terry Gannon on the network’s telecast of the 2013 Skate Canada International featuring performances from the men’s and ladies’ free skate competitions.

On the Air

The NBA Finals will sport a new look with owners voting to shift back to a 2-2-1-1-1 format for the series. The rejiggered plan will see the higher-seeded team will host Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. The current format was implemented in 1985 to ease travel concerns, something execs don’t believe is a major issue anymore.

The NFL reports that ten NFL game telecasts this season have passed the 25 million viewer mark, according to Nielsen, for a 400% spike over the same point in 2012, when there were only two. The telecasts have also already surpassed the total for the full 2012 season, which tallied 8. On the local front, NFL games topped ratings in 27 NFL markets last week, led by Denver with a 49.6/71 and Indianapolis at a 49.1/71, and Kansas City, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh round out the top five.

A new report from Bloomberg drew up values for all of the MLB clubs, with the average value of a Major League Baseball team now worth $1 billion, according to the report, which measured revenue from ticket sales, concessions, sponsorships and broadcast rights, as well as interests in TV channels, radio stations and real estate. To no one’s surprise, the Yankees top the list at $3.3 billion, followed by the Dodgers at $2.1 billion. The Red Sox, Mets and Cubs round out the top five.

Relativity Media is taking on a different kind of sport, agreeing to a partnership with Major League Gaming that will look to take pro video gaming to a more mainstream audience. The content and marketing alliance will span sports management, television, film and digital media with Relativity Chief Executive Ryan Kavanaugh joining MLG’s board of directors.

New York sports media pillar Bill Mazer passed away at the age of 92, according to the New York Times. Mazer retired in 2009 after more than six decades in broadcasting and 20 of them spent as the nightly sports anchor and the host of Sports Extra on WNEW-TV, Channel 5.

This morning, Citi CEO Michael Corbat and three Team Citi athletes are slated to extend a national program designed to help future Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and athletes in communities around the country. The program, dubbed Every Step of the Way, will see the company extending the program through 2014 with a $500,000 donation that will be allocated to sport programs selected by Citi’s nine Olympic and Paralympic qualifiers, hopefuls and ambassadors. Athletes are set to include Dan Jansen, Picabo Street and Rico Roman.

Feld Motor Sports locked in a deal with Monster Energy to serve as the official energy drink for the Nuclear Cowboyz tour. The multi-year deal will see each city on the tour hosting a special incentive program that will give fans access to the VIP lane. The 2014 tour begins on Jan. 4.

Digital & Technology

The return of the World Series last night saw FOX Sports bring in 28 high-definition cameras to cover the games, including traditional long-lens, handheld, wireless and robotic, as well as several special cameras that include the Diamond Cam, the FOX Phantom Cam and X-Mo. About 200 microphones were mounted in the ballpark to capture sounds on the bases, in the outfield, dugouts, along walls and the crowd.

Meanwhile, FOX Sports revealed that, for the week ending October 20th, video streams on FOXSports.com spiked 133% year-over-year with MLB content driving viewership. That marks the best week for MLB videos on FOXSports.com in the past two years.
