Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here . ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
History opens a new whistle-blowing series Extreme Trains hosted by train conductor Matt Bown on November 11 at 10p. The series, shot in hi-def, will explore the inner workings of a different type of train and its place in history during each episode. Tiger Aspect Productions produces for History. ABC ordered nine more episodes of Private Practice from ABC Studios, taking the drama to a full season order, per THR. Fox Reality Channel unveils season two of My Bare Lady 2: Open for Business on November 8 at 10p. This new season follows four adult film stars as they travel to London to become classical theatre actors. Zig Zag Productions is the production company behind the series. Oxygen’s The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency season four finale averaged 234,000 A18-49 viewers, 168,000 W18-49 viewers and 342,000 total viewers. Alec Baldwin will join Turner Classic Movies’ Robert Osborne as co-host of The Essentials, the network’s weekly movie showcase beginning next March. TCM’s The Essentials, beginning its ninth year in 2009, airs Saturdays at 8p. Memorial Day weekend will no longer be included in Nielsen’s May sweep period, cites B&C. The National Association of Broadcasters applauded Nielsen moving the May sweep cycle up by a week beginning April 23 and ending May 20. NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton said by not including the highly traveled, lower viewership Memorial Day weekend, the May sweep period “will provide a more representative audience measurement for all television programming.”

BET Networks and The Weinstein Company (TWC) are working together for the first time on a four-movie deal involving first network-window premiere rights. The titles include The Longshots (starring Keke Palmer) and the upcoming Soul Men (starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac) and Hurricane Season (starring Forest Whitaker), as well as a portion of the network window rights to The Great Debaters (starring Denzel Washington). Furthermore, BET’s 106 & Park will broadcast the red carpet premiere show of Soul Men on October 28, renaming it 106 & Soul Men for that night. BET will also air a primetime special around Hurricane Season, featuring a town hall meeting from John Ehret High School in Marrero, LA with students and the film’s actors and producers. New Yorkers will receive more comprehensive weather updates as News 12 Networks and News 12 Traffic and Weather are teaming with Weather Underground, giving News 12 access to more than 400 local neighborhood weather centers throughout the New York metropolitan area. News 12 will also post real-time weather information at News12.com. News 12 Networks is owned and operated by Cablevision Systems Corporation. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Not to be outdone, Bill O’Reilly host of Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor made a new four-year pact with the network for an estimated $10-12 million per year. With a commitment to staying on television, O’Reilly says he wants to lessen his work load and will halt his nationally syndicated radio show, The Radio Factor through Westwood One and Fox News Talk, perhaps even early next year. Major League Baseball Network (MLBN) is discussing with Bob Costas of NBC Sports the possibility of Costas joining the network beginning next season, per Variety and Sports Business Daily. Nothing has been settled yet, though the talks include adding Costas as a play-by-play or color announcer for a minimum of one game per week as well as participating in nightly in-studio updates. Costas has been with NBC Sports for more than 20 years and currently anchors NBC’s Sunday Night Football franchise in addition to other sports events and NBC’s Olympics coverage. He also hosts HBO’s Costas NOW. NBC’s ER may continue with more episodes even though the veteran medical drama is 14 years old and (supposedly) in its final season, according to THR and Live Feed. ER has been winning its Thursday 10p time period, besting frosh dramas ABC’s Life on Mars and CBS’ Eleventh Hour, prompting NBC to discuss with Warner Bros. the potential of adding more episodes. These are preliminary talks; a decision is probable by the end of the month. Production for season two of TV Land’s She’s Got The Look has started in New York City. Kim Alexis hosts the reality supermodel contest series for women 35+ where the winner receives $100,000, a contract with Wilhelmina Models, Inc. and a photo spread in SELF magazine. This new season also expanded from six episodes to eight. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
