CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

10/14/04

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 14, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The American League Championship Series Game #1 won the ratings game on Tuesday night for Fox with a 5.5/15 A18-49 rating in fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC came in #2 for the night with a 3.7/10, followed by ABC 3.5/9, CBS 2.9/8, WB 2.3/6, UPN 1.3/3.
At 8pm Fox was in front, as it was for the length of the game. CBS’ NCIS was #2 with a 3.6/10 and ABC’s pair of sitcoms was #3 with a 3.3/9.  The preemption of Last Comic Standing for a pair of Father of the Pride eps left the hour on par with last week, earning a 2.4/7.  WB’s Gilmore Girls won the hour among W18-34 with a 4.6/13.
At 9pm ABC’s sitcoms won out among the non-sports programming with an overall 4.0/10 for the hour. Rodney, ABC’s freshman sitcom at 930p earned a 3.6/9, dipping from its According to Jim lead-in by two share points. NBC’s Father of the Pride (3.6/9) and Scrubs (3.6/9), was behind ABC. UPN’s Veronica Mars earned its demo high among W18-34 with a 2.2/6.  CBS’ Clubhouse founds its demo high among A50+ with a 5.7/11; among the more key demos, it averaged in the neighborhood of a 5 or 6 share.
At 10p NBC was in front with L&O: SVU, ahead of NYPD Blue’s 3.1/8 and Judging Amy on CBS (3.18).

ABC and its Affiliate Association’s Board of Governors have come to terms on a new four year affiliation agreement. That deal includes the affiliates helping out with the network’s NFL Football license fees.  The next step is the Agreement goes to the Affiliates for their consideration.

Casting / Development / Production:

  • You may remember with fondness the original 90m movie The Night Stalker with Darren McGavin playing the role of investigative reporter Carl Kolchak.  That movie aired in 1972 and in September 1974 it became a weekly series on ABC.  A wildly successful movie … not so much as a series.  Well ABC may be taking another shot at it with Frank Spotnik as the creative force behind it, in his development deal with Touchstone Television, per Variety.
  • The Commando Nanny, WB‘s sitcom slated for this season which has suffered two setbacks to date, has just been set back again with the exit of showrunner/exec prod Rachel Sweet. The show’s first setback was when its Australian star Philip Winchester broke his foot and was replaced with Owain Yeoman.  Then Gerald McRaney went in for surgery to have a cancerous growth removed from his lung (he is expected to make a full recovery). The show was originally slated to launch on September 17.
  • DJ Nash has signed a development agreement with Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet for a sitcom for NBC called My Other Life in Brooklyn.  Based on Nash’s own experiences as an actor living with five single roommates while shooting Whoopi in NYC, and then returning to his wife and family on the weekends in LA.
  • HBO is looking at a project called Powerball (Brad Grey Television), a 30m weekly series about a family who strike it rich when they win a 9 figure lottery. Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green, the folks behind The Sopranos, are behind the project which has received a script commitment from the pay cabler, says Variety.
  • Film Director Brett Ratner has signed a two year development deal with 20th with his own shingle Rat TV.  Already he has two script commitment deals for two projects with CBS, per Hollywood Reporter.
  • Just a Phase is the title of a new project for ABC Family about a teenager questioning his s#xual identity. Created by Carter Covington, Touchstone Television will exec prod.
  • The Ralph Show (20th/WalkingBud) starring Ralph Macchio is one of those shows that cross over between reality, sitcom, scripted and improv’d, a la both Curb Your Enthusiasm and Larry Sanders Show.  The project is at Fox and will be exec prod by Todd Holland.

Miami Vice is coming to the big screen and thus far in negotiation to star in the two pivotal rolls are Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett, and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs.  Also in negotiations to participate with Universal on this film, according to Variety, is Michael Mann, the show’s original exec producer, who is considering producing/directing the film. Anthony Yarkovich – who created the TV show – is on board as exec prod.   Also keep an eye out for the original series to make its DVD debut some time in the next few months.

Comedy Central has ordered up a third season of Reno 911 (Jersey Television) with 13 new eps scheduled to launch Summer 2005.

An associate producer for Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor has filed court papers suing Bill O’Reilly for s#xual harassment, alleging three separate incidents of phone s#x.  A suit was first filed by O’Reilly and Fox against the producer and her attorney, alleging extortion, and the s#xual harassment suit was filed thereafter. The O’Reilly suit claims the producer and her attorney had demanded $60 million in so-called ‘hush’ money to prevent the lawsuit from being filed. O’Reilly talked about the matter on his show yesterday and said it was the “single most evil thing I have ever experienced, and I’ve seen a lot. But these people picked the wrong guy.”

In this season of syndication downgrades and program movements, Tony Danza Show has been upgraded in two markets: WCNC/Charlotte moved Danza from 3p to 4p as the news lead-in.  He replaces Pauley at 4p (Pauley moved to 10a, and Starting Over moves to 3p). And KCWE/Kansas City on Monday will move Danza from 1pm to 9am, replacing Life & Style, which will go to 1pm.
