Several broadcast networks added episodes or ordered full seasons of current and new primetime series:

  • NBC granted Harry’s Law six extra episodes adding to its current 13-episode order.  Airing on Wednesdays at 9p, Harry’s Law stars Kathy Bates and is from David E. Kelley.
  • NBC additionally gave new drama series Prime Suspect a six-episode order despite its middling ratings.  Last week, Prime Suspect posted a 1.5 rating/4 share with A18-49 and averaged 4.9 million viewers. Repeats of Prime Suspect are also airing in The Playboy Club’s previous time period on Monday nights. 
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar’s frosh drama, Ringer was given a full season order by The CW.  Ringer opened on September 13 with a 1.6 rating among A18-49 and has since tapered off to a 0.7 in the demo as of Tuesday this week.  CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television in association with ABC Television Studios and Brillstein Entertainment produce the series.
  • The CW gave frosh series Hart of Dixie a full season order from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Fake Empire, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.
  • The CW further handed another full season order to new series The Secret Circle from Outerbanks Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.

Adding to its primetime lineup, Current TV introduces a new live one-hour program at 9p hosted by former Michigan Governor, Jennifer Granholm.  Premiering in January, The War Room With Jennifer Granholm will focus on political analysis and provide election year commentary from political insiders, campaign experts and newsmakers.  The program, produced at Current TV’s San Francisco headquarters, will additionally feature a special segment called New Faces of 2012 designed to spotlight aspiring politicians who will be the potential newsmakers in the future.  Granholm served two terms as governor of Michigan and she has made regular contributions to NBC’s Meet the Press and recently co-authored a book with her husband, A Governor’s Story: The Fight for Jobs and America’s Economic Future

Just a short time after its second season premiere, HBO gave Boardwalk Empire a third season renewal.  Boardwalk Empire is from Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and director Martin Scorsese and is set during the 1920s Prohibition era in Atlantic City.  The series sports an average gross audience of 10.7 million viewers for HBO. 

Independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) said the original scripted drama Haven received a third season renewal order consisting of 13 episodes for 2012.  Haven airs in the US on Syfy and during its second season has averaged 995,000 with A18-49; 1.14 million with A25-54 and 2.55 million total viewers.  Haven is produced by Entertainment One and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd and also airs on Showcase in Canada and internationally on UNI’s various Syfy Universal channels. 

Starting Monday, MTV is tweaking its schedule with all-new episodes of Ridiculousness at 10p followed by Cuff’d in a new time slot at 1030p with scripted horror comedy series Death Valley capping the night in a new time period at 11p. 

According to series creator, Julian Fellowes, a third season of British period drama Downton Abbey is likely on the horizon.  Presently, the second season of Downtown Abbey is airing in the UK and is considered another ratings success.  Fellowes said he always had three parts to the Emmy-winning Downton Abbey in mind with the first season to begin around the end of the Edwardian era, the second set during WWI and third season set in the 1920s. Downton Abbey opens its second season in the US on PBS January 8 (check local listings).  

US English-language television network, Mnet targeting Asian American fans of Asian pop culture unveiled its new fall 2011 programming schedule:

  • Hello Pop! is a daily show for fans of K-pop where they can interact and meet via music videos.  Airs Monday-Thursday at 5p.
  • Must is a music show featuring artists introducing remakes of oldies and unknown songs.  Airs Mondays at 8p.
  • Syndicated series M-Countdown is the top-rated music TV series in Korea counting down the best K-pop hits.  Airs Mondays at 9p
  • Cooking show Tasty Road features celebrity hosts as they travel to different places in Korea.  Airs Tuesdays at 9p.
  • Bandai Entertainment Block is a programming block showcasing anime series. Mnet is currently airing Outlaw Star and My Otome.  Airs Wednesdays from 8p to 10p.
  • Culture Japan rejoins the schedule this November with a second season following all things pop culture in Japan with expert Danny Choo.  Airs Thursdays at 830p.
  • Short Notice is a weekly one-hour primetime series produced in Los Angeles with host Christina Lee.  The series features award-winning Asian American short films and interviews with filmmakers. Season two airs Thursdays at 9p beginning tonight.
  • Indie Movie Night spotlights the best in Asian cinema with films from Korea, Japan, China, Thailand and the Philippines.  Fridays at 8p.
  • WCG Ultimate Gamer watches as America’s top gamers battle for the title of WCG Ultimate Gamer.  Airs Saturdays at 7p.
  • Lifestyle show Fighting Spirit sports a competition between two teams and each team has a fighter who will work with a mentor to prepare for the challenge.  Airs Saturdays at 8p.
  • Style Cuts is an interactive fashion variety show. Airs Sundays at 7p.
  • Weekly entertainment news show Wide News offers updates about Korean celebrities and the Korean entertainment industry.  Airs Sundays at 730p.
  • In Need of Romance is a romantic dramedy series about the lives, loves, marriages, careers and more of single independent women in their 30s.  Airs Sundays at 9p.

As an aside, because we know Ben … Ben Bliss, one of the newest members of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program, will make his Company debut in just a few weeks as Benvolio in Romeo et Juliette. But he makes his NBC primetime debut tomorrow night, with a guest appearance on the new sitcom Whitney. And he’ll sing! Tune in Thursday at 9:30pm, when lead characters Whitney and Alex compete to see who can be more romantic.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

This month, Comcast is launching MYX TV in the Seattle area. MYX TV is the country’s only Asian American music entertainment and lifestyle network and will be added to Comcast’s XFINITY Digital Preferred tier in Western Washington and in Spokane.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Renee Zellweger is partnering with Lifetime on the development of a period drama series titled Cinnamon Girl.  Set in the turbulent late 1960s/early 1970s Los Angeles, Cinnamon Girl is a coming-of-age drama centering on four girls, Cassie, Lola, Penny and Lou.  Zellweger created the project along with Anthony Tambakis (Warrior) and the plot will delve into the characters’ lives during the era’s political, artistic, social and sexual revolution.  Zellweger, Tambakis and Gavin O’Connor will serve as executive producers while Zellweger and Tambakis will co-write the story with Tambakis writing the script.  O’Connor will direct and Danny Bramson is also on board as producer and music supervisor.  This is the second time Zellweger has teamed with Lifetime with the first project being the 2008 original movie Living Proof with Zellweger serving as executive producer.

Lifetime is also working on a second possible period drama series about William Wilkerson, the founder of The Hollywood ReporterJohnny Depp’s company, Infinitum Nihil and GK-TV, the television division of Graham King’s GK Films are on board to produce the project which is in the early phase of development.  Depp would be on board as a producer through his company along with GK-TV’s Craig Cegielski.  Rob Cooper will write the script.

Former High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will headline a new multi-camera comedy in development at ABC titled Under Construction. The project would star Tisdale as a young woman whose independence is curtailed when she has to move back home while her father renovates her recently purchased “money pit” in addition to her life.  David Holden is writing and will serve as co-executive producer along with Tisdale and Jessica Rhoades and Relativity’s Tom Forman.  Warren Littlefield will also be involved as executive producer.  ABC Studios is producing.

The creative team behind TNT’s Memphis Beat, married couple Joshua Harto and Liz Garcia sold a one-hour drama script to NBC.  The period drama is titled The Meadows and is set in 1960s Las Vegas.  Scott Stuber and Quan Phung are producing from Stuber Pictures; Universal Television is producing.

ABC approved a drama project based on David Blaine titled In Like Fin about Fin, an illusionist who is drawn into a covert government sting, per THR.  Alexi Hawley, producer on Castle and My Generation’s Warren Littlefield are behind the project with Hawley set to write and executive produce, with Littlefield involved as a non-writing EP.  Blaine is not attached to the project.

Sony Pictures Television sold two projects to two different broadcast networks, per THR. The first project is a comedy script with penalty picked up by FOX called Wednesday Night Warriors about the lives of five 30-something buddies who are former high school basketball teammates.  Mike Sikowitz (Rules of Engagement) is on board as executive producer and writer.  ABC ordered Sony’s second project, a script based on the book Exploiting My Baby: A Memoir of Pregnancy & Childbirth by Teresa Strasser. Julia Franz and Jamie Tarses (Happy Endings) will manage the project via their Fan Fare company along with Strasser. 

Syfy ordered eight episodes of the popular international game show Total Blackout from FremantleMedia North America.  Hosted by Jaleel White (Family Matters, Grown Ups), the half-hour game show places contestants in complete darkness to compete in challenges.  Syfy will add the show to its primetime schedule for 2012.  Production on Total Blackout begins in Los Angeles next Tuesday.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:   CBS moved to the top of the pack Tuesday with a 3.2/8 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Usual time period winner, CBS’ NCIS led at 8p with a 4.0/11 followed by ABC’s series launch of Last Man Standing with a one-hour premiere episode at 3.6/10. According to ABC, Last Man Standing drew an average audience of 13.0 million total viewers and has become TV’s most-watched comedy series debut at 8p on any night since September 2004 and the best rated among A18-49 since September 2006. At 9p, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results Show and CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles tied for #1 at 3.3/8 apiece and FOX’s MLB ALCS Game 3 was #2 at 2.7/7.  FOX won the 10p hour with more of the MLB ALCS Game 3 action at 2.7/7 while CBS’ Unforgettable and Univision’s Mexico vs. Brasil shared the #2 spot at 2.3/6 each and NBC’s Parenthood was third at 2.1/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

George McTeague was hired by Gigantc! Productions as SVP/Production and Development.  George was the former VP/East Coast Development at MTV and in his 18 years as a producer and creator of original programming has served as executive producer on formats such as Made, House of Style, Cuff’d and many more.  In his new role at Gigantic, George will focus on production and development of current and future projects. 

TLC appointed Alon Orstein as VP/Production and Development, East Coast where he will manage editorial and execution on series and specials while strengthening relationships with external production partners.  Alon is based at TLC’s Silver Spring, MD headquarters and reports to Howard Lee, SVP/Production and Development.  In addition, TLC tapped Timothy Kuryak as VP/Production and Development, West Coast.  Timothy will supervise the West Coast production group and network with the production community as well as work closely with the network’s headquarters in MD.  Timothy will be based in Los Angeles.

As of November 1, Lee Cowan rejoins CBS News as National Correspondent based in Los Angeles.  Lee will further contribute to CBS News broadcasts and platforms across the division and he will also be a substitute anchor for CBS Sunday Morning.

Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Group company elevated John Greco to VP/Production and added Cara Goldberg as Executive in Charge of Production.  John has been with the company since July 2008 and has managed production on series including E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, MTV’s The Real World, Oxygen’s Love Games among others.  Presently, John is heading production of Best Ink which is set to premiere later this year on Oxygen.  Cara most recently was with Dick Clark Productions where she was Executive in Charge of Production.  In her new position, Cara will serve as EIC for the ninth season of Project Runway and the premiere seasons of Project Runway All Stars and After the Runway.
