Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 12, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

MIPCOM/MIPCOM JR.

Elastic Rights has completed new TV and publishing deals for the preschool animated series ToddWorld in Spain and Portugal.  Produced by Mike Young Productions, ToddWorld is based on the bestselling books by Todd Parr, which follow the antics of 6-yr-old Todd and his group of friends.  Elastic Rights handles all rights for ToddWorld in Spain and Portugal.

  • In Spain, free TV broadcaster TVE has picked up the series for air in fall 2007, and in a pay-TV deal for the region Boomerang has acquired an additional 13 episodes of the series that it plans to roll out from spring 2007.
  • In Portugal Elastic Rights has inked a publishing deal with Gailivro, which plans to launch a range of books this fall, and a DVD distribution deal with Lusomundo.  ToddWorld debuted on Portugal’s RTP in March 2006.

Virgin Comics and Kahani World, Inc., a Canadian indie animation studio, have partnered to co-produce Secrets of the Seven Sounds, an animated feature film inspired by the ancient Indian myth Ramayana.  Targeted to kids 7+, the movie follows the story of the young love-struck Prince Ram who must rescue the princess he loves and go up against the evil Lord Ravan to save the world, as told by Lux, Prince Ram’s 11-year-old brother.  Expected to begin production before the end of the year, the movie is slated for release in summer 2007.  Secrets of the Seven Sounds is a collaboration with Virgin Comics co-founders, Deepak Chopra and movie director Shekhar Kapur, and is based on an original story by Gotham Chopra, Sharad Devarajan and Jeevan Kang.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The first theatrical trailer for Warner Bros.’ movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is slated to run in theatres as of November 17.  The catch?  The HP trailer will be attached to the top of Warner Bros.’ animated movie Happy Feet, so at least for the short-term, that will be the only way to see it.  The full HP and the Order of the Phoenix movie will be released in theatres July 13, 2007.

The N has acquired a UPN series and is set to air its first sketch comedy.

  • The N will premiere the sketch comedy special, The Brandon T. Jackson Show, on Friday, November 24, at 9-9:30p.  Targeted to teens, the special features 20-year old comedian Brandon T. Jackson, who co-created and executive produced the special with comedian Wayne Brady, who also stars in the show.  Comprised of four skits, all written and performed by Jackson and Brady, that feature comedy built from current headlines (news and celebrities) and politically incorrect humor.  The special also includes guest appearances by Sinbad and Chris Brown, as well as a musical performance by Nelly Furtado.  Also serving as executive producers are Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr.
  • The N has acquired the off-net cable syndication rights to the sitcom One on One (113 episodes) from CBS Television Distribution Group.  One on One, which ran on UPN from 2001-2006, will bow on The N during its Fresh One Weekend, a marathon of the best episodes of both One on One and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, October 27-29, 2006.  The weekend-long marathon kicks off with 12, back-to back One on One episodes beginning Friday, October 27 at 6p.  One on One will air regularly on The N Monday through Thursday with back-to-back episodes at 7p beginning Monday, October 30.

Cartoon Network’s Toonami programming block will host the world premiere of the new animated movie Hellboy: Sword of Storms, on Saturday, October 28, at 9:30p.  The animated movie features the voices of several of the actors that starred in the 2004 live-action Hellboy movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro, including Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman) and Doug Jones (Abe Sapien).  Created, written and drawn by Mike Mignola, Hellboy initially appeared in the early 1990s as a character in comic book published by Dark Horse Comics, and has since been featured in a series of comic books by the publisher.  Mignola and del Toro serve as creative producers and are very involved in story development and animation style for Sword of Storms, which is being directed by Phil Weinstein and Tad Stones.  Hellboy: Sword of Storms is produced by Film Roman, a division of Starz Media Co., and is distributed worldwide for TV and on DVD/video by Starz Media, LLC, which has licensed all animation rights to the Hellboy franchise from Revolution Studios. In partnership with Revolution Studios, Film Roman is developing and producing animated content for TV and home entertainment as well as a full range of integrated marketing applications across all categories.  Oh and yeah, I’ve said it before but Hellboy isn’t really for kids, younger ones anyhow.

Hellboy 2, the next live-action Hellboy movie, is slated to begin production in April 2007 in Budapest and London.  Scheduled for release in summer 2008, Hellboy 2, which is also being directed by del Toro, is being financed and distributed by Universal.  The first Hellboy movie was produced by Revolution Studios and distributed by Columbia.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Home Video (WHV) has scheduled the release of the Superman Ultimate Collector’s Edition (UCE) for November 28, 2006, which is also the day and date release of the DVD debut of the Superman Returns Special Edition as well as the previously announced Superman DVDs Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection.   The UCE, a 14-disc set ($99.92), includes all six Superman movies (Superman Returns Special Edition, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, Superman II Two Disc Special Edition, Superman III & IV Deluxe Edition) and a host of extras, some of which are exclusive to the release, on three bonus discs.  UCE is packaged in a tin and lenticular, a reproduction of the comic book Superman issue #7, a Superman overview booklet and a mail-in offer for five Superman theatrical movie posters. 

Also on November 28, WHV is releasing the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions of Superman: The Movie and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, with their own sets of extras.  Both titles will be available for $28.99 SRP.

STONE SOUP

Konami and 4Kids Entertainment are inviting Yu-Gi-Oh! fans to create their own design and name for a new monster in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Design your Destiny Card Contest, beginning October 14-November 7.  A panel of judges will select winners in three age categories, 3-17 yrs old, with the winners in each group getting their design published as an official trading card and included in a Yu-Gi-Oh! booster pack to be released in 2007.  To be considered submissions must be received by 4Kids Entertainment by November 3, 2006, the winners will be announced on 4Kids TV in early January 2007.  The official rules are available at www.4kids.tv .

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group has made two senior executive appointments:

  • Jim Perry has been named EVP/360 Brand Sales, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Perry will oversee ad sales for multiple brands across a wide variety of platforms in the Nickelodeon universe, including Nickelodeon, Noggin, The N, Nicktoons Network, Nick Online, Neopets, the Nickelodeon Magazine Group, and emerging media.  Perry will report to Cyma Zarghami, President/Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group and Hank Close, President/US Ad Sales, MTV Networks.  Perry, who joined MTVN in 1991 as a Sales Planner/Ad Sales, most recently served as SVP/Nickelodeon Advertising Sales.  Previously, he was a Research Analyst at U.S. News & World Report, and prior to that a Sales Representative at General Foods Corporation.
  • Tanya Van Court has been named SVP/Preschool and Parents Online, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Van Court oversees strategy and operations, as well as creative and editorial content for the preschool and parents online businesses.  She is responsible for the day-to-day management of Nick Jr.com (Playtime and Nick Jr. Parents), broadband services Nick Jr. Video and Nick Jr. Parents TV, Noggin.com, GoCityKids.com and the newly launched social network site ParentsConnect.com.  Van Court will report to Steve Youngwood, EVP/Digital Media.  She takes over the reins from Krya Reppen, who was recently upped to SVP and GM/Neopets.  Most Recently, Van Court served as VP/New Media Video Products, ESPN, where she led the launch of ESPN360, ESPN’s broadband video and online gaming player.

Sean Moran has been appointed EVP/MTV 360 Brand Sales for MTV Networks, effective immediately. Based in New York, he will supervise advertising sales for all MTV brands over multiple platforms including MTV, MTV2, mtvU, and MTV.com, and report both to Christina Norman, President, MTV and Hank Close, President/U.S. Ad Sales, MTV Networks.

Craig Coleman has been named Director/Marketing, Nicktoons Network.  He will oversee the marketing initiatives for the network, including brand and property management as well as promotions marketing.  He will also be responsible for strategic marketing for the animation network as it expands into digital and multiplatform businesses.  Most recently, Coleman was a Manager/Promotions Marketing, Nickelodeon.  Previously, Coleman worked as a Sr. Account Manager, Colangelo Synergy Marketing.
