CBS’ legal drama Made in Jersey has become the first canceled new program of the fall broadcast season.  Yesterday CBS pulled the drama from its Friday night schedule and will put CSI: NY in its 9p slot starting October 12.  CBS’ reality series Undercover Boss is also returning for its fourth season on November 2 at 8p with repeats of NCIS and Hawaii Five-O alternating in the time period until then.  Made in Jersey premiered with a 1.1 A18-49 rating and 7.7 million total viewers on September 28 and in its second episode dropped to a 0.8 demo rating and 6.8 million total viewers.

More details emerged yesterday about the joint news and lifestyle network venture from ABC News and Univision News targeting US Hispanics.  The unnamed network launching in 2013 will be based in Miami and “will be dedicated to informing, empowering and inspiring Hispanic Americans in English” while covering current topics important to US Hispanics including the economy, entertainment, music, food, immigration, education, politics, health and wellness and more.  ABC News and Univision News also revealed digital media executive Miguel Ferrer will become the first executive producer, Digital for the new company.  Ferrer, beginning his new post on October 30 will manage all digital properties and work closely with the ad sales, distribution and editorial teams.  The President and CEO and other executives on the management team are expected to be announced later this year.  The joint venture will have the support of Enterprise Florida, the State of Florida’s economic development agency, as well as The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s economic development partnership.

Beginning November 12, Willie Geist will become a co-host of the 9a hour of NBC’s Today.  Geist will continue as co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and will additionally contribute to NBC News programs and for the NBC Sports Group.  He will also have an increased online presence via MSNBC.com’s revamped Zeitgeist, a video blog he started and has managed since 2007.

Telemundo Media is teaming with T-Mobile USA Inc. on a category-exclusive, brand integration centered for its reality competition series Yo Me Llamo (My Name Is) hosted by Gaby Espino and featuring a panel of three celebrity judges.  The talent competition show allows amateur singers and performers battle for $100,000 in cash and prizes by transforming themselves into their favorite musical artist.  Yo Me Llamo airs Sundays at 9p on Telemundo.

Lifetime renewed its docu-series Dance Moms for a third season helmed by dance instructor Abby Lee Miller.  Lifetime ordered 26 all-new one-hour episodes for the new season which will premiere next year.  Collins Avenue produces the series.

The final 12-episode season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager will bow next March on ABC Family.  The fifth and final season will include a proposal and a wedding and the main characters Amy, Ricky, Ben, Adrian, Grace and Jack will all make plans post-high school.  ABC Family will additionally air an all-day marathon on November 19 from 11a to 8p as a lead-in to the new holiday episode airing that evening at 8p.

The seventh season premiere of Psych on USA Network has been set for February 27 at 10p.  The new season will have 16 all-new one-hour episodes starring James Roday as police consultant Shawn Spencer who solves crimes with his power of observation so accurately the police think he’s psychic.  During its current season, Psych will reach its landmark 100th episode and additionally air a two-hour musical.  Psych is produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Tagline Pictures.

Season two of Ink Master premiered with a two-hour episode on Spike TV last Tuesday at 10p which attracted 1.1 million total viewers and posted a 1.01 rating with M18-34; a 0.8 rating among M18-49; and a 0.76 rating with A18-49.

Regions Financial selected integrated marketing agency CSE to implement the strategic marketing plan for its CSE-developed collaboration with six Historically Black Colleges and Universities called Regions HBCU Partnership.  The campaign will target the southern US and will support financial education, academics, athletics and alumni engagement.  CSE will oversee Region’s overall HBCU involvement and serve as lead strategic agency for multicultural efforts. 

NFL star and actor Alex Karras died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 77.  Mr. Karras was an All-Pro lineman for the Detroit Lions and had a second career as an actor in television and movies.  Mr. Karras made his film debut in 1968 playing himself in Paper Lion, an adaptation of George Plimpton’s book.  This movie role pivoted Mr. Karras into several appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and then in the 1970s he played numerous guest roles on series such as McMillan & Wife, Love, American Style, M*A*S*H and The Odd Couple.  In 1975 he starred in the television movie Babe playing opposite Susan Clark who became his wife and they starred together again in the sitcom Webster which ran from 1983-1989.  His other film credits include Porky’s, Against All Odds, Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles and Blake Edward’s Victor/Victoria.  For three seasons, Mr. Karras was an NFL broadcaster working with Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford on ABC’s Monday Night Football.  Furthermore, he wrote a novel, Tuesday Night Football and his autobiography, Even Big Guys Cry.  Mr. Karras is survived by his wife, Susan, their daughter, Katherine Karras; and five children from his first marriage, Alex Jr., Peter, Carolyn, George and Renald; and five grandchildren.

Outdoor Channel reached a milestone by increasing its subscriber base by more than one million new subscribers in September 2012.  Recent upgrades on cable systems such as Comcast and RCN across regions like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C. contributed to the network’s increased audience reach.  Overall, more than 97 million cable, telco and satellite subscribers across the US have access to Outdoor Channel’s programming in standard-def and hi-def, including those in all top 50 US DMAs.

Hi-def television channel, myZen.tv is transitioning its content this December to offer a new coaching approach to further extend wellness and relaxation programming into viewers’ homes.  myZen.tv will offer televised instructor-led classes including Laughter Yoga, Pilates, Couples’ Massage & Massage Techniques and Initiation to Meditation.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Eric Dane, formerly known as McSteamy on ABC Grey’s Anatomy was cast in TNT’s drama pilot The Last Ship from Michael Bay.  The Last Ship is based on William Brinkley’s novel of the same name about a global catastrophe that nearly wipes out the Earth’s population, forcing the crew of a naval destroyer to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors.  Dane will star in the pilot as Tom Chanler, the commanding officer of the USS Nathan James who is married with two young daughters.  The Last Ship is produced by Platinum Dunes’ Brad Fuller and Andrew Form with Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane as EPs and Bay as producer.  Steinberg and Kane are co-writers on the pilot.

Former Law & Order star Jesse L. Martin landed one of the lead roles in NBC’s soap drama The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives, per TVLine.  The plot focuses on three suburban couples affected by a murder.  Martin Henderson was recently cast as one of the lead roles. Martin, who will also guest star in NBC’s Smash, will play Greg Cooke, a former hedge fund manager whose financial woes forces him to partner with unsavory characters.

~ MIPCOM 2012 ~

Former FremantleMedia Asia CEO Patrick Schult announced the launch of his new business, Media-Stable Pte Ltd.  Based in Singapore, Media-Stable will use Schult’s global contact list to distribute Japanese formats and television programming in addition to developing and distributing original content created specifically for the Asian market.  Media-Stable has already formed an alliance with Japanese entertainment production company, BIG FACE Co. Ltd. with programming including primetime series, documentaries, sports, specials and more.  The main BIG FACE property Media-Stable is representing is the Japanese game show NumerOn.

UK independent television distributor Cineflix Rights inked a major exclusive three-year partnership deal with US producer LMNO Productions.  Terms of the agreement has Cineflix Rights distributing LMNO’s 450-hour back catalog of programming as well as new content.  LMNO programming offered by Cineflix Rights at MIPCOM for the first time includes Unusual Suspects with 50 one-hour episodes, The Little Couple with 100 half-hour episodes, Cheating Vegas with three one-hour episodes and Hollywood & Crime with six one-hour episodes.  

Zodiak Rights secured a pre-sale financing from Canada’s BELL Media for Asylum Entertainment’s series Beverly Hills Pawn with 12 half-hour episodes.  Los Angeles-based Asylum Entertainment produced the series for REELZCHANNEL in the US where it will launch later this year. 

Banijay International’s celebrity diving format Stars in Danger was picked up by broadcaster TV3 Sweden soon after it was sold to TV2 Norway.  Nordisk Film TV, a Banijay Group company will begin production soon on the series to launch next year in primetime on TV3 Sweden.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC hit the right note among A18-49 viewers Tuesday at 2.9/8, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, NBC’s The Voice won at 4.5/13 followed by CBS’ NCIS at 3.4/10.  CBS moved into first place at 9p with NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.0/8 while the average of NBC’s comedies Go On and The New Normal and the average of FOX’s sitcoms New Girl and The Mindy Project each delivered a 2.3/6 to tie for second place.  Then at 10p, CBS’ Vegas and NBC’s Parenthood both shared the #1 spot at 2.0/5 each and Univision took third place with Amor Bravio at 1.8/5.
