Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 8, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NHL and its players association appear to have some momentum in the latest round of negotiations for a new CBA. Wednesday’s meeting marked the third in five days for the two sides, following more than two weeks apart.
Halfway through the 2012 NFL season, the league reports that more than 172 million fans have tuned in to NFL games, noting that nearly one quarter of its season’s games (31 of 132) generating the winning score in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, marking the highest rate ever through Week 9 since at least 1970. Other notables at halftime: an NFL game telecast has been television’s most-watched program in each of the season’s first nine weeks (up from seven of the first nine weeks in 2011); NFL games account for the 20 most-watched programs on television (since Sept. 5) among adults aged 18-49; and NFL Network viewership is up 90% in primetime through Week 9.
A new survey on the state of NASCAR shows that interest in the sport among avid fans is at its highest levels in five years. The findings, from Taylor’s fifth annual Consumer Engagement Survey: NASCAR Fans, show that half of avid fans surveyed are more interested in the sport today than they were just a year ago and the likelihood of avid fans recommending NASCAR to others has increased to the highest level seen since the survey began. Social media continues to propel NASCAR fans, with usage highest among younger avid consumers. Nearly four out of five of those ages 18-34 experience NASCAR content via social media. Other findings show that loyalty to sponsor brands among avid NASCAR fans remains strong, especially among in the 18-34 demographic.
Bounce TV is getting into the ring, announcing that the channel will carry its first-ever boxing telecast when it airs World Boxing Association (WBA) Title matches and undercards on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30p. The event, entitled WBA Championship Boxing, is a co-production between Bounce TV, the Pursuit Channel, and south Florida boxing promoter Acquinity Sports.
Due to weather concerns, FOX Sports Networks announced updated national television distribution for Battle on the Midway pitting Syracuse/San Diego St., which now moves from Friday to Sunday at 4p. FOX Sports San Diego will produce the game and televise it locally, while FOX Sports Networks (FSN) will distribute the game to its affiliates across the country. Pregame coverage is set to begin at 3p.
ESPN locked in plans for the college baseball season, with ESPNU’s third annual Thursday Night SEC Baseball Game of the Week now in place. The weekly series will begin March 28 and continue every Thursday through May 16, beginning with Texas A&M/South Carolina at 7:30p.
The EA SPORTSMaui Invitationalannounced its full broadcast schedule for the Opening Games and game times for the Regional Games, which will both take place ahead of the Championship Round in Maui from Nov. 19-21. The opening round begins on Friday with Illinois/Colgate at 8p on BTN.com and USC/Coppin St. at 11p on Pac-12 Network. Remaining games in the round will be held from Nov. 10-13. After the Opening Games, the four Mainland Teams will play in a two-day, four-game event starting Nov. 17 on ustream.com.
The ATP is going to stay in London for a while, announcing that the Tour’s season-ending event, featuring the world’s best eight singles players and doubles teams, will remain in the city through 2015. Since moving there in 2009, more than 750,000 fans have visited to watch the event over the past three years.
The NBA locked in a multiyear TV deal with Multi Screen Media that makes SONY SIX the NBA’s exclusive broadcast partner throughout India. The partnership will include live NBA games, original programming, as well as a joint commitment to host grassroots basketball events on the ground. The two companies will also create customized local programming by bringing together talent from the NBA, Sony Entertainment and Bollywood. SONY SIX will air live NBA games each week on Thursday, Friday and Sunday with replays in prime-time.
The final Week 12 NFL schedule was announced with NBC electing to keep the previously scheduled Packers/Giants game as its SNF selection.

FOXSports.com announced a deal that makes Samsung the official sponsor of NFL Rules Analyst Mike Pereira’s online content including columns, weekly videos, and social media integration. As part of the agreement, Samsung will promote its suite of mobile products during the initiative, including the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II Initiative includes the “Your Call” sweepstakes, where fans can enter for a chance to win a trip to the FOX Sports NFL studios in Los Angeles to meet Mike Pereira later this season. Samsung is also sponsoring FOXSports.com’s featured NFL writers as well as NFL content on Yardbarker.
Yesterday, New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis debuted in a new spot as part of the NBA on ESPN RV marketing campaign, joining ESPN commentator Mike Breen and Hornets’ mascot Hugo, who loses a fellow member of his insect family on the RV’s windshield. The Hornets host the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 8p on ESPN.
MSG Network is reportedly backtracking on a controversial Knicks poster campaign and executives told ESPN that the ads are now being removed from their locations. One of the ads read “It’s Friday night. You can either see a Broadway harness malfunctioning or you can watch real men fly,” apparently referencing the Broadway show “Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark” in which actors have been injured.

The NFL is teaming with Keepr Media to launch Keepr NFL Legends, a collectible that honors leagues legends in a new, interactive format via a retractable USB plug-in that delivers rare footage from the NFL Films vault, along with spectacular photos and career stats. The first year release includes the likes of Mike Ditka, Franco Harris, Sonny Jurgensen, Howie Long, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Deion Sanders, Phil Simms, Roger Staubach, and Johnny Unitas.
Fancloud.com announced an equity sharing program for its user generated content through the formation of Fancloud Publishing. The model allows its independent writers to have an opportunity to earn shares in the newly formed company via a rewards program that is based on reach, effectiveness and quality with milestones that include most articles written, most read article, highest-rated article and most shared article on social channels. Fancloud.com also announced it has joined the Yardbarker Network the largest content and advertising network of independent sports properties on the web.
FUEL TV revealed that its latest original special, In Focus: Franklin vs. Le, promoting the upcoming UFC ON FUEL TV 6 main card fight this weekend, has recorded more than 1.7-million downloads and ranked number one in sports and number nine in overall video podcasts this week.
