“Much of the conversation around Millennials has focused on ‘what’ they are – what makes them different, what platforms they are spending time on, and so on,” Jake Katz, VP, Audience Insights & Strategy for new Millennial-focused net Revolt, tells Cynopsis. “We’re excited to open up the dialogue of ‘how’ – how to operate in new media. Everyone knows the game has changed, and we’re excited to talk about how to ‘do it’ given the new rules, no rules, mentality of the Millennial generation.” Katz is just one of the experts who will be on hand to offer insights in the new Cynopsis webinar, Leveraging Social Media to Drive Tune-In and Ratings, taking place two weeks from today.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Twenty-first Century Fox took a hit this quarter, reporting lower earnings due in part to its investment in two new cable channels. But chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said in a statement it was all part of the plan: “The investment we are making, including the launch of FXX and Fox Sports 1, will drive future sustained growth toward our stated 2016 target.”

It was a different story at Time Warner, parent of TNT, TBS and HBO. “We had another strong quarter and remain on track for a very successful year,” said CEO Jeff Bewkes in a statement. ‘The biggest driver was again our Networks segment… which posted its highest quarterly profits ever.”

In CBS‘s earnings call, the company reported its best third quarter ever. CEO Les Moonves said the month-long blackout on Time Warner Cable didn’t hurt the net, and pointed to deals with companies like Netflix and Amazon as examples of the importance of retaining digital rights. Moonves also credited summer programming like Under the Dome with being “a new daypart, generating new advertising revenues, new digital streaming models and new content franchises.”

The FCC wants TBS to fork over a $25,000 fine for an April Conan promo that included a mock emergency alert warning. “It is inexcusable to trivialize the sounds specifically used to notify viewers of the dangers of an incoming tornado or to alert them to be on the lookout for a kidnapped child,” said FCC Enforcement Bureau Acting Chief Robert H. Ratcliffe. Turner said it has since changed its review practices.

Dan Rather, who covered President John F. Kennedy’s assassination for CBS in 1963 before becoming the net’s lead anchor for 24 years, will be sharing his story with Tom Brokaw on NBC November 22, the 50th anniversary of the event that rocked the nation. Rather, who exited CBS in 2006 over a dispute about a story about George W. Bush’s military service, has said he wasn’t asked to participate in the net’s anniversary coverage.

Starz reached 22 million subscribers for the first time, up 6 percent since September 2012. In its third quarter 2013 results the pay cabler also reported strong multiplatform performance for its miniseries, The White Queen, with almost 5 million viewers per episode.

Veteran’s rights activist Gary Sinise (CSI: NY) has signed on as the spokesperson for Sportsman Channel‘s Salute to Service initiative, celebrating American servicemen and women and raising awareness of issues facing veterans. The net is expanding its coverage for 2014, with Salute taking center stage on holidays commemorating the military, like Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Sinese’s documentary, High Flight, about his experience flying in a spy plane, will premiere on the channel in 2014.

FremantleMedia acquired a majority stake in Danish scripted production company Miso Film. “This is an important milestone in building our prime time scripted business,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of FremantleMedia, “and strengthening our position in the Scandinavian  market.”

WE tv has enlisted Traci Braxton, star of its Braxton Family Values, in the net’s efforts to support the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. It wasn’t a tough sell. Appearing through December 15 in a PSA urging women to “learn, listen and act,’ Braxton tells Cynopsis, “I am honored to be a part of this movement. As African-American women, we need to recognize the serious health threat that it poses in our community and be informed and proactive about taking our health seriously.”

Chozen, a new animated comedy about a gay white rapper originally scheduled for FXX, has slid over to sister FX. The show debuts Monday, January 13 at 10:30p, after established hit Archer.

Al Jazeera America continues to beef up its ranks, naming Jacob Ward its science and technology consultant. Ward is the former editor-in-chief of Popular Science.

~ COMING UP ~

TV Land is launching new comedy Kirstie with two back-to-back episodes. In the premiere, diva Maddie Banks (Kirstie Alley) meets the son she gave up for adoption. The cast includes Alley’s former Cheers co-star Rhea Perlman and Michael Richards (Seinfeld). Premiere is Wednesday, December 4 at 10p.

Oliver Stone film JFK, about the assassination of President Kennedy, is one of many programming events on Reelz marking its upcoming anniversary. “It was because of this movie that public pressure forced Congress to pass the JFK Records Act in 1992,” Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard reminds Cynopsis. Movie airs Monday, November 11 at 8p.

On the theory that “styles may change, but murder lasts forever,” Investigation Discovery takes a look back at homicide cases from the 50s and 60s in A Crime to Remember. It’s “an homage to a period when men, martinis and murder were often found in the same gossip column,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President, ID, Destination America and Military Channel. “Each episode plays out like a period thriller.” Series debuts Tuesday, November 12 at 10p.

Destination America is jumping on the Alaska programming train – literally, in Railroad to Alaska. What’s the attraction to the Last Frontier? “The natural beauty and danger of Alaska sets the stage for breathtaking visuals for viewers,” Caroline Perez, Senior Director of Development, DA tells Cynopsis. “We use that backdrop to illustrate the challenging conditions for those working and relying on a train that is essentially their lifeline.” The Windfall Films docu-series premieres Saturday, November 16 at 10p.

British adventurer Bear Grylls returns to Discovery Channel for Bear Grylls: Escape From Hell. The survival expert tells stories of ordinary people in perilous situations – then re-lives their experiences himself. The six-part series debuts Monday, November 11 at 10p, then moves to its regular Wednesday time slot on November 13.

Myx TV makeover show Best Night Ever promises to make “Hollywood dreams come true.” The reality series launches Thursday, November 14 at 8p.

Here TV struck a deal with Breaking Glass Pictures for a slate of films that will debut on the gay-focused network over the next six months. Pix include Hollywood to Dollywood, Out in the Open and Nate & Margaret.

~ RETURNING SHOWS ~

American Horror Story: Coven has been renewed by FX for a fourth season. Now in its third run, the horror drama is averaging 7.74 million total viewers and 5.45 in A18-49.

TV Land‘s The Exes is coming back for an extended season three. After the comedy’s summer airing scored 9 percent above the prior year’s average in the A25-54 demo and had a 21 percent increase in total viewers, the net ordered 10 more episodes, which launch Wednesday, December 11 at 10:30p.

Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice returns to Discovery Channel for more brutal dredging for treasure. The Original Productions docu-series, the top cable show in its time slot among men last season, premieres season three Friday, November 8 at 10p.

Justified starts its season five on FX Tuesday, January 7 at 10p. The net’s highest-rated comedy, Archer, will also start its fifth season, but is moving from a Thursday slot to Mondays at 10p, starting January 13.

Netflix is launching the sophomore season of Lilyhammer on Friday, December 13. All eight eps of the mob drama will be available for streaming.

~ DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE ~

Peace Point Rights announced the sale of food and lifestyle titles to AXN Black, a Sony Pictures Television Networks channel across Central Europe. Programs include Body Fuel, Food Jammer and Hammer and Chew.

A multi-year licensing deal between Lionsgate and Jiaflix Enterprises will make Lionsgate/Summit films like The Princess Bride and Dirty Dancing available for VOD and streaming on China’s official streaming site, M1905.

~ CASTING ~

Joel Johnstone (Newsroom) has joined the cast of Lifetime backdoor pilot Deliverance Creek, says the Hollywood Reporter. The Warner Horizon Television drama is set at the end of the Civil War.

The Advertising Mega Panel: If You Build It, Will Clients Come? Register at http://www.cynopsisdigitalsummit.com + find out at the 2nd annual Digital Measurement Summit on 11/13 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT~

TBS has picked up a pilot from Steve Carell and his wife, Nancy. Tribeca, from Carell’s Carousel Television, is a satire of procedurals that will be written and exec produced by the couple.

Fox is developing a buddy comedy from Conan O’Brien, reports Variety. The Conaco project is about the rocky road to success, told from the perspectives of two old men.

Fatrick has gotten a pilot order from Fox. The 20th Century Fox Television project tells the story of a 30-something damaged by his years as a fat kid.

Production has begun on El Rey Network‘s adaption of the 1996 Robert Rodriguez film, From Dusk Till Dawn, starring D.J. Cotrona (Dear John) and Jesse Garcia (Sons of Anarchy), with Don Johnson (Nash Bridges) recurring. El Rey founder Rodriguez says of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, “If the movie’s the short story, the series is the novel.” The new net launches in December, 2013.

CBS is developing medical series The Advocate, from Carol Mendelsohn Productions, about a former doctor solving medical crises. CBS Television Studios will produce.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

~ RATINGS ~

Last week’s preemptions for The X Factor didn’t hold down Fox’s Tuesday comedies. Dads, 1.4/4 in the A18-49 demo, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 1.6/4, held steady with their last original eps, according to Nielson, and New Girl (2.0/5) and The Mindy Project (1.5/4) both got ratings bumps to beat ABC comedies The Goldbergs (1.5/4) and Trophy Wife (1.1/3) in their time slots.

The return of The Real Housewives of Atlanta for season six on Sunday delivered 3.1 million viewers and 1.9 million A25-54, reports Bravo, making it the top show in ad-supported cable during the 8p hour in all key demos.

Discovery Channel‘s Fast n’ Loud was the number one cable program among M25-54 (1.82) and M18-49 (1.62), excluding sports, on Monday, its third consecutive week at the top.

Its reboot of Crossfire isn’t helping CNN‘s slumping numbers: Monday’s show hit a lowest-yet 233,000 viewers and 59,000 in A25-54.
