~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Frosh series The X-Factor received good news yesterday in the form a second season renewal from FOX.  To date since it premiered, The X-Factor is averaging more than 13 million viewers.  The series was created by Syco Television and is produced by Syco Television and FremantleMedia North America.

First up, The CW Network sets its 2012 Midseason Schedule. Highlights include:

  • The final season of One Tree Hill debuts January 11 at 8p with 13 episodes.  The series is produced by Mastermind Laboratories and Tollin/Robbins Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
  • New reality series Remodeled from Fly on the Wall Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television premieres January 18 at 9p.

Other CW series return with original episodes in January.  Those specific dates include:

January 5: The Vampire Diaries at 8p; The Secret Circle at 9p
January 6: Nikita at 8p; Supernatural at 9p
January 10: 90210 at 8p; Ringer at 9p
January 11: One Tree Hill (season premiere) at 8p followed by a season premiere encore at 9p

John Walsh’s series America’s Most Wanted is back with a 25th season of new episodes on Lifetime beginning December 2 at 9p.  Lifetime ordered 10 all-new one-hour episodes featuring Walsh as host on the program that helps law enforcement officials capture fugitives.  America’s Most Wanted is produced by Walsh Productions and is distributed by Twentieth Television, Inc.

The cast of Jersey Shore are back at home in Seaside Heights, NJ, when the series kicks off season five on MTV January 5 at 10p.  Jersey Shore still holds the title of being MTV’s #1 series of all time.  During its fourth season and factoring in DVR playback, the show delivered an 8.8 rating among P12-34 and was the #1 ranking program with 12-34 viewers. Furthermore, the complete season four averaged 9.4 million viewers each week.  Jersey Shore is from 495 Productions.

Yesterday, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals upheld its 2008 ruling that the fine CBS received from the FCC pertaining to the Janet Jackson Super Bowl indecency decision was arbitrary.  Afterward, CBS released a statement, “We are gratified that once again the court has ruled in our favor. We are hopeful that this will help lead the FCC to return to the policy of restrained indecency enforcement it followed for decades.”

On Monday, WFN: World Fishing Network opens a fourth season of Hookin’ Up with Mariko Izumi at 730p.  The new season launches with a three-part episode documenting Izumi’s Alaskan adventure airing over three consecutive Mondays  November 7, 14 and 21 showing her fly-in fly fishing, offshore salmon fishing, shrimping, crabbing and more in The Last Frontier. The series is the lead-in to WFN’s Big Bass Monday, a two-hour block of themed programming from 8 to 10p.  WFN’s other primetime theme nights are Fly Fishing Tuesday; Offshore Wednesday; Inshore Thursday; Freshwater Friday; and World Fishing Saturday.

Later this month to coincide with Veterans Day, Military Cannel offers up programming throughout the weekend to honor our armed forces:

  • The network will air blocks of shows under the umbrella of Greatest Generation Programming with back-to-back episodes of Secrets of World War II on November 11 from 6a to 8p; the series Clash of Wings on November 12 from 1p to 8p; and the BBC miniseries World at War on November 13 from 12p (noon) to 11p.
  • Also on November 12 at 12p, the network serves up the world premiere of Fallen: But Not Forgotten a documentary chronicling the ongoing search for six heroes killed in Vietnam.
  • In primetime, Military Channel has scheduled two commemorative films as part of its movie franchise, An Officer and A Movie hosted by Lou Diamond Phillips. On November 11 at 8p the network will air PT 109 starring Cliff Robertson and on November 12 at 8p the movie presented is 633 Squadron also featuring Cliff Robertson.

During Thanksgiving week, Investigation Discovery will air its third annual Black Widows Week from November 21 to November 27 with programming spotlighting wicked women and their dastardly deeds at various times throughout the week.  The week-long programming stunt also includes the second season debut of Facing Evil with Candice DeLong with double premiere episodes on November 25 at 9p and 930p. 

The “rock stars” of science Geoff Notkin and Steve Arnold star in a new third season of Meteorite Men debuting on SCIENCE on November 28 at 10p.  In the new eight-episode season, the duo search for more 40 million year old cosmic treasures in such places as Arizona, Poland and Russia.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Syndicated game show Family Feud, distributed by Debmar-Mercury and produced by FremantleMedia North America was renewed through 2015 in more than 75% of the US.  Station groups renewing the show include FOX, Sinclair, CBS, Tribune, Cox, Capital, NBC, Sunbeam, Newport and Belo.  Comedian Steve Harvey hosts Family Feud and beginning next season all new episodes will be shot in hi-def.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

44 Blue Productions, behind such programs as Lock Up, Deadliest Warrior and more is working with Atlantic City-based Resorts Casino Hotel and its owners The Gomes Family to produce Betting On Boardwalk.  The docu-series will go inside this family-owned business set amidst the historic casino hotel.  Rasha Drachkovitch is the executive producer.

British actress Lucy Griffiths, best known for her role in the BBC drama Robin Hood, is joining HBO’s vampire series True Blood as a series regular.  Griffiths will play Nora, Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgard) vampire sister who is working as a double agent within the Vampire Authority.  Production will commence on True Blood’s fifth season later this year and will launch next summer.

NBC’s Parenthood signed Jonathan Tucker (The Black Donnellys) for six episodes playing Bob Little, a young liberal political candidate.  Bob will hire Kristina (Monica Potter) to run his campaign and Amber (Mae Whitman) will also be on board as an assistant.

Ana Gasteyer has been promoted to series regular on ABC’s frosh comedy Suburgatory, per EW.  Gasteyer plays Sheila Shay, the alpha mom neighbor to George (Jeremy Sisto) and Tessa (Jane Levy). 

When 30 Rock rejoins NBC’s lineup at midseason, Mary Steenburgen will be seen in multiple episodes, reports EW.  Steenburgen will play Charlotte, the attractive and energetic mother of Avery (Elizabeth Banks) who butts heads with Jack (Alec Baldwin).  NBC has not yet set 30 Rock’s debut date.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:   CBS notched a clean sweep win Tuesday on the sixth day of November Sweep at 3.2/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’ NCIS topped at 3.9/11, FOX’s Glee took second place at 3.0/8 and in third place was ABC’s new comedies Last Man Standing and Man Up! at an average of 2.3/7.  CBS remained in #1 with NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.4/9 and FOX’s comedies New Girl and Raising Hope averaged a second place showing at 3.1/8 and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results show was #3 at 2.8/7.  Then at 10p, CBS won by a narrow margin with Unforgettable at 2.3/6 followed closely by NBC’s Parenthood at 2.2/6 and ABC’s Body of Proof was a few steps behind at 1.9/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Hollywood-based MRB Productions added Lori Huck as Director/Development.  Previously, Lori was with New Line Television where she served as VP.

After restructuring its Independent Production division, Canada’s Bell Media announced three staffing changes who will all report to SVP/Independent Production, Corrie Coe:

  • Trish Williams was elevated to Director/Independent Production, Drama.  The Drama team also consists of Rebecca DiPasquale, Robin Johnston and Gosia Kamela as Production Executives, Drama; as well as Mike Richardson and Angelika Walaszczyk.
  • Sarah Fowlie was promoted to Director/Independent Production, Comedy.  The comedy team also includes Jake Labow, Production Executive, Comedy and Kara Haflidson.
  • Susan Makela was hired as Director/Canadian Programming Management joining from Corus Television.

Cineflix Studios, the scripted unit of global producer and distributor Cineflix Media tapped Miura Kite as EVP/Cineflix Studios.  In her new role beginning next Monday, Miura will head development in the US and the scripted side of the company’s Los Angeles office.  Miura will report to Christina Wayne, President, Cineflix Studios.

Independent, full-service advertising agency, Brunner with offices in Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. added Rob Schapiro as Executive Creative Director/Content.  Rob will work in tandem with Jay Giesen, Executive Creative Director/Visual Arts.  Rob joins Brunner after a 14-year span at the Martin Agency where he was most recently SVP/Creative Director.

Lifetime Networks appointed Abigail Harvey and Noah Pollack as VPs/Reality Programming, effective immediately.  Abigail and Noah will develop and supervise the production of non-fiction fare for Lifetime.  Abigail will be based in New York and Noah will be located in Los Angeles; both will report directly to Gena McCarthy, SVP/Reality and Alternative Programming, Lifetime Networks.

Tracy Karagianis becomes SVP/CIO for AMC Networks Inc. to head the development, execution and support of all information technology on behalf of the company and its brands including AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel, WE tv and IFC Films.  In his new position, Tracy reports to Steven Pontillo, AMC Networks, SVP/Broadcasting and Technology.  Prior to this appointment, Tracy was with GfK Custom Research in New York where he was CIO for North America.

Mark Rodman takes on the new position of VP/GM of KSAZ-TV FOX 10 in Phoenix.  Mark’s new role begins immediately and he reports to Jack Abernethy, CEO, FOX Television Stations.  For the last three years, Mark has been the VP/GM of KTBC FOX 7, the FOX O&O in Austin.
